The liquid silver light boiling out of the deckplates did not disperse into the offshore wind.

It clung to the cold iron, thick and viscous as quicksilver, curling around the edges of the pool like frost spreading across frozen glass. Where Arthur Pendelton’s blood had soaked the rusted seams of the sunken destroyer, the puddle hissed, inverted its color, and sank straight down into the abyssal void beneath the metal.

Renan kept his right hand extended, his fingers spread wide, palm angled forty-five degrees toward the center of the dark pool.

His core hummed with a deep, grinding vibration that resonated through the bones of his forearm. The extraction of a World-Class entity was fundamentally different from raising ordinary hunters or salvage porters. The spiritual anchor of a man who had anchored the military pride of an entire continent resisted the pull of the abyss, clawing against the void with fifty years of martial dogma and divine conditioning.

Renan took half a step forward, his left boot coming down hard against the steel plating.

"Rise," Renan commanded.

He did not shout. His voice was quiet, dry, and flat, yet the acoustic density behind the single syllable carried the weight of the thirty-mile trench beneath their feet.

The boiling silver-black pool snapped taut.

Two gauntlets of dark star-metal, rimmed with jagged silver runes that glowed with a cold, spectral twilight, burst upward through the steel deck. The iron deckplates shrieked as the fingers dug three inches into solid metal, finding purchase to drag a gargantuan, armored silhouette out of the dark void.

The newly formed knight pulled himself onto the deck in absolute, terrifying silence.

Standing seven feet tall, the figure was broader than the living Arthur, his frame encased in fluted plate armor woven from blackened star-metal and solidified shadow. Across his broad chest, the broken crest of the Silver Round had reassembled, but the twelve golden points had shifted into sharp, needle-thin silver thorns that burned with pale necrotic fire.

Where his throat had been severed by the void dagger, a high, razor-edged gorget sealed the wound behind layers of interlocking midnight scales. From beneath the heavy horned visor, two pinpricks of pure, argent twilight ignited, casting pale geometric shadows across the wet deck.

At his hip hung no physical scabbard; instead, a long, ethereal claymore formed entirely from compressed, liquid silver darkness hummed against his armored thigh.

Arthur did not stagger. He did not look at the sky or glance back toward the retreating Allied fleet eighty miles to the west.

He stepped clear of the shadow pool, the heavy iron sabatons of his boots striking the rusted deck with dull, rhythmic clangs. Ten paces from Renan, the dark titan stopped, drew the silver-black claymore from his side in a single, fluid arc, and planted the tip three inches into the steel floor.

Arthur dropped heavily onto his right knee, bowing his crested helmet until his visor was parallel with the iron deck.

"My Sovereign," Arthur spoke.

His voice was no longer that of the haughty aristocratic champion who had descended from the clouds. It was deep, metallic, and carried the quiet, somber weight of an ancient bell tolling inside an empty stone crypt.

"The oath of the Round is severed," Arthur continued, his armored shoulders square and motionless beneath his shredded silk cloak. "My blade, my marrow, and my shadow belong to the Sovereign of the Deep."

Renan lowered his hand, the violet embers dancing along his knuckles slowly settling beneath his skin.

"Stand, Arthur," Renan said.

The shadow knight rose smoothly, towering over Renan by nearly a foot, yet his posture remained locked in rigid, absolute deference.

Beside the twisted conning tower, Shadow General Ignis crossed his arms over his massive chest, his horned helmet tilting slightly as he measured the newcomer. For the first time since the fall of Guild Apex, Ignis was no longer the sole commander-class entity standing at Renan’s flank. The ambient heat radiating from Ignis’s black dragon-fire clashed against the freezing, argent pressure rolling off Arthur’s armor, creating a narrow seam of twisting mist between the two titans.

Renan walked to the northern edge of the central platform, looking out across the gray swells of the Eastern Strait.

Through the salt fog, four miles to the north, two guided-missile frigates flying the British naval jack were struggling to turn their broadsides. When Vance had ordered the tactical withdrawal of the American vanguard, the British escorts—paralyzed by the sudden execution of their supreme commander—had lingered too long near the continental shelf. Their auxiliary engines were smoking, their radar masts spinning in wild, disorganized sweeps as they tried to locate their fallen champion.

"Victor," Renan spoke into the lapel receiver.

"Reading you, Sovereign," Victor’s voice crackled through, clear and steady now that the electromagnetic pulse from the kinetic strike had subsided. "Coastal listening posts just intercepted the distress broadcast from the HMS Defiance and HMS Vanguard escorts. London hasn’t given them permission to scuttle. The Admiralty is ordering them to verify Arthur’s status before breaking formation."

Renan did not reach for his void dagger. He did not summon the artillery batteries of the Iron Wall.

He turned slightly, looking back over his shoulder at the kneeling shadow knight.

"Arthur."

"Command me, Sovereign," the dark knight answered, his argent pupils flaring bright behind the narrow slits of his visor.

"Your former men are waiting for confirmation," Renan said softly, his voice cutting through the damp ocean gale. "Take three hundred shadow skirmishers from the hull. Go out to their decks, Arthur. Deliver your report in person."

Arthur’s gauntlets tightened around the hilt of the silver-black claymore. He lifted the weapon from the deck with effortless grace, resting the flat of the heavy blade against his left shoulder guard.

"It shall be done, my Sovereign," Arthur whispered.

The shadow knight turned toward the northern railing, his ragged cloak billowing behind him like a funeral shroud. With a single, explosive leap that left twin cracked depressions in the iron plating, Arthur launched himself into the gray sky, his dark form trailing a streak of cold argent light as he plummeted toward the water, followed by three hundred liquid-black silhouettes rising silently from the foam.

On the bridge of the lead British frigate four miles out, the lookout’s binoculars suddenly shattered under a blast of freezing wind as a solitary figure in black star-metal landed heavily on the forecastle, splitting the forward anti-aircraft turret in two.
