Dungeon Master (Karma System)
Chapter 248: Underworld Quest
Kesh could not see the end of the spirit passage.
Two mist barriers divided the route ahead. Each opened according to a different physical counterweight below, and the dark glass distorted the distance between them. The final sequence might require minutes or hours.
His clock continued falling.
Tessa placed one hand against the matched-name plate beside the half-raised gate. An aperture opened between the routes.
"We move the seal first." Tessa said. "Then we solve the next division."
The four living members lowered the carrying frame until the passage seal rested a handspan above the floor. Belda threaded rope through the frame and around two bronze posts beyond the gate. Min crossed first and used the line to keep the frame level. Orin and Tessa pushed from the chamber while Belda pulled from the far side.
The gate left too little space to stand.
They advanced the seal one brace at a time. Orin kept his injured shoulder beneath the frame only when no other position would hold it. Tessa controlled each movement so no one carried the full weight during a shift. The bronze gate scraped across the top of the frame but never touched the seal.
Kesh moved through the first mist barrier above them.
The spirit corridor ended at a circular room containing five hanging nameplates. Four responded to the living members. The fifth carried Kesh’s name.
He rotated his plate toward the River Office symbol.
Below him, the physical gate rose another foot.
"The missing counterweight was the recognized keyholder." Kesh said through the aperture.
The Five Knots pulled the carrying frame clear. The gate closed behind them, removing the route back to the seal chamber.
The hall had committed them to the return path.
The physical corridor divided around a floor of narrow bronze panels. Kesh’s spirit passage continued across the same space without a visible barrier, but inscriptions appeared beneath his feet when the seal entered the room.
[Names carried by the living must be acknowledged by the dead.]
Each physical panel displayed a name that vanished when viewed directly. Kesh could read the corresponding inscriptions from above. He guided Tessa onto the first safe panel, then Belda, Min, and Orin. Moving the seal changed the names and forced him to call a new order before every step.
The procedure failed when the seal crossed the room’s center.
All the names disappeared.
Stone defenders rose from the walls along both physical exits. On the spirit side, the mist-covered figures that had followed Kesh stopped at the edge of the room and waited for him to choose a route.
Kesh searched the inscriptions again. A second line had appeared beneath the first.
[A closed name must be carried without being spoken.]
The safe path no longer depended on reading names aloud. The seal itself cast narrow shadows across the panels, and one shadow remained dark while the others faded.
Kesh could identify the correct panel but could not tell the party its name. He changed the method they had established. One turn of his plate directed Tessa left. Two meant right. Holding the plate flat meant wait.
The physical defenders advanced before the party understood the first signal.
Tessa did not abandon the carrying frame to meet them. She moved onto the indicated panel and ordered the others to keep the seal level. Belda used the tensioned rope to pull the rear of the frame into alignment. Min released lamp oil across an empty panel, creating a surface the stone figures could not cross without losing their footing. Orin used his hull tool to catch a defender’s leg and redirect its weight rather than trading strikes beside the seal.
The Five Knots crossed through timing and load control. They fought only long enough to protect the next movement. When the final safe panel brightened, the defenders returned to the walls instead of pursuing them into the next passage.
Kesh’s clock showed four hours and forty minutes.
The second mist barrier required a physical weight placed in two locations at once. The four living members had the seal, but moving two additional blocks would leave too few hands on the carrying frame.
Orin examined the block channels.
"We do not need to hold both weights. The channels only need to register them together."
He removed the support brace purchased in Hades and wedged it inside the first channel. Belda used rope to pull the block against it while the others moved the second weight. The brace bent under the pressure.
The two channels registered at the same moment.
Kesh crossed the opened mist barrier. Orin recovered the damaged brace after the first block rolled back, but its central support had cracked. He retied it around his shoulder and reduced the weight he carried on the seal.
Their remaining rope took the difference.
The return path climbed toward the hall’s entrance. Kesh reached a gallery overlooking the physical corridor and found the final sequence of locks arranged around a bronze model of the building.
Four physical gates stood between the seal and the exit. Each spirit control opened one gate while closing another. The model showed no arrangement with every route open at once.
Kesh mapped the sequence before touching anything.
The living party would move the seal into one section. He would close the gate behind them and open the next. At the third section, Tessa would have to operate a physical lever that sealed Kesh inside the gallery until the four reached the exit.
"Can the spirit route reopen after we pass?" Tessa asked at the next aperture.
"The model shows a release beside the exit. You will reach it before I do." Kesh said.
"How long will your route take?"
"Longer than yours."
His clock showed three hours and eight minutes.
They began.
The first two transfers worked. Belda and Min controlled the ropes while Tessa and Orin moved the carrying frame between gate lines. Kesh changed the spirit controls only after the seal rested on marked stone.
The third gate jammed against debris left by an earlier attempt.
The living members could not lift the gate while supporting the seal. Kesh could see a spirit-side release beyond the gallery wall, but opening it required closing the second gate and trapping himself away from the final controls.
Tessa made the decision.
"Open the release. We will move the seal through the last gate without you."
Kesh closed the route behind the party and crossed the gallery. The release withdrew the damaged third gate. Tessa’s group carried the seal into the final section while the wall sealed Kesh inside the model room.
[Spirit-side keyholder separated.]
[Living bearers remain active.]
Kesh returned to the bronze model. The nameplates no longer responded to direct contact. The living exit control had to complete the sequence.
Below him, Tessa found the release beside the hall doors. Activating it opened the spirit wall and closed every physical gate behind the seal.
Kesh ran.
His afterlife form did not tire like his physical body, but the clock lost time at the same pace. He crossed the gallery, passed through the mist barriers, and reached the final name aperture as the living members carried the seal into the sunken court.
[Hall of Closed Names complete.]
[Passage seal recovered.]
[Return the seal to the River Office.]
Two hours and eleven minutes remained.
The district outside the hall did not shorten itself for a completed objective. The four living members still had to transport the heavy seal through the Court of Measures. Kesh followed a spirit road running beside them, separated by wards that allowed conversation only at registered crossings.
Dead visitors moved aside when they saw the quest mark. Constructed wardens did not carry the seal or offer a cart. The requirement specified living bearers, and accepting assistance from an afterlife form would invalidate the transport condition.
Tessa reorganized the load. Belda took the forward ropes. Min controlled the rear of the frame. Orin used his good arm at the side while Tessa moved between positions before fatigue could force anyone to drop the disk.
They reached the River Office with one hour and twenty-four minutes remaining.
The receiving frame waited beside the five coin settings.
Every setting remained empty until the physical seal entered the office, confirming that progress alone could not release the return fare.
The four living members raised the passage seal and slid it into the mechanism. Kesh stood beyond the barred spirit window, unable to touch the disk even after helping bring it across the district.
The frame closed.
[The Hall of Closed Names complete.]
[Five recognized participants credited.]
[Primary reward: Five return-passage coins.]
[Additional rewards unlocked: Restricted trainer access, restricted market access, and continuation of The Road Beneath Still Water.]
Four dark coins appeared in the office’s physical tray. Tessa, Belda, Min, and Orin each claimed one.
The fifth remained a record rather than becoming a physical object in Hades.
[Kesh: Return-passage coin recorded for delivery after consciousness returns.]
[Kesh: Full quest progression retained.]
Tessa asked whether Kesh’s recorded coin could be released to one of the four physical claimants. The river official refused. Every passage coin belonged to the participant who had earned it. Kesh would receive his after returning to the hospital, but no living member could spend it for another crossing or convert it into an extra fare.
The river official confirmed the result.
"The dead participant’s reward follows the quest record to the restored body. The living participants must spend their coins to leave."
Kesh checked the continuing quest. A rare navigation trainer, restricted market permissions, and another sealed objective now belonged to all five members. Automatic return would not erase any of them.
Forty-two minutes remained.
The Five Knots left the River Office together but traveled on separate sides of the district. Kesh could not board the same return boat as a physical passenger, and the four living members could not follow him through a visitor exit.
At the last matched-name crossing before the Styx, Tessa opened the aperture.
"We will meet you at the hospital."
"The quest is complete. Do not rush the descent because of my clock." Kesh said.
He remained at the crossing while the four continued toward the landing. His clock reached zero before they arrived.
The afterlife form dissolved without pain or impact.
Kesh awakened in Sanctuary’s hospital. The recorded return coin entered his restored inventory beside the completed quest rewards.
Far beneath Corathen, Tessa placed her coin in the ferryman’s hand. Belda, Min, and Orin paid in turn.
The boarding chain lowered for four living passengers.
Kesh opened the party record from his hospital bed.
[The Hall of Closed Names: Complete.]
The other four still had to cross the Styx and climb back to the living world.
