Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 207 - 192: Treasure Construction Site
Chapter 207: Chapter 192: Treasure Construction Site
As for future combat team members, Yu Dong planned to recruit them in batches this way.
This would ensure the team remained small but highly skilled.
After all, their armor and weapons were in limited supply. Until they could be substantially restocked, they couldn’t afford to arm too many people.
After breakfast, Yu Dong led the combat and logistics teams north. Instead of taking Binhai Avenue, they followed Huanggang Road out of the port.
Their destination for the day was a large construction site—a residential complex that had been left unfinished since before the apocalypse.
The north was closer to the Urban Area, and they noticed a clear increase in high-rises and shops along the way.
"I never noticed before the apocalypse, but damn, there are supermarkets and liquor stores everywhere. Who even planned this layout? These are prime resource spots, pure and simple."
As usual, Zhao Youcai led the combat team to clear out zombies, then waited for the logistics team to come and salvage the area.
Yu Dong raised his crossbow, scanning the high ground around them, on guard for any potential climbing zombies.
Ordinary zombies were no problem for the experienced combat team.
Indoors, they moved like Jackie Chan, effortlessly using nearby furniture to block the zombies’ advance while a few others followed up to stab them to death.
Out of Yu Dong’s line of sight, a green zombie clung to the shadows of a building, steadily making its way toward them.
Its dark green skin was its best camouflage.
It could already smell the scent of fresh blood. It was different from the common zombies; it possessed a hunter’s instincts.
It made no pointless noises before it lunged. It didn’t run along the ground. Its muscles were more developed, its senses were keener, it...
THWACK!
A Crossbow Arrow slammed right into its chest, the force punching clean through its body. The climbing zombie flailed, then plummeted from the side of the wall.
A sharp glint in his eye, Yu Chengfei took a couple of quick steps, hoisted his 3.3-meter-long Liuhe greatspear, and thrust it upward!
SQUELCH!!!
The spearhead punched straight through its skull. Skewered like a shish kebab on the Liuhe greatspear, the climbing zombie died instantly.
Yu Dong breathed a sigh of relief.
"Good thing we spotted it. That thing is damn sneaky..."
This was their first encounter with a climbing zombie in the field. Thanks to their heightened state of alert, they hadn’t given the creature an opening for a sneak attack.
The members of the combat team all gathered around to look at this climbing zombie.
"So this is a mutant? Its body looks leaner, the bones are a little curved, and its nails are longer."
"What’s this green, sticky stuff on its hands and feet? No wonder it can climb so high."
"Kinda looks like the Lizard from Spider-Man."
"It’s not that buff. Feels like it has the same build as a regular zombie. A stab to the head still puts it down."
Listening to the team’s discussion, Yu Dong walked over. He pulled his Crossbow Arrow from the climbing zombie’s chest, wiped it clean, and placed it back in his quiver.
"A climbing zombie’s head-on fighting ability isn’t much greater than a regular zombie’s. The main danger is its unpredictable attack angles. To safely contain just one of them, we’d need at least four people on high alert."
Yu Chengfei planted a foot on the climbing zombie’s body and yanked his Liuhe greatspear free.
"Good news, its skull isn’t that tough, so you guys can pierce it too. If you react fast enough, you can absolutely turn and impale it in mid-air as it pounces."
Everyone: "..."
"That’s some pretty fast reflexes."
"You’re judging us by your own standards, Coach Yu."
"If I were that good, I’d go get a role in *Spirit Cage* for a couple of episodes."
Seeing their dumbfounded expressions, Yu Chengfei couldn’t help but laugh.
"It does take some skill... Alright, I’ll teach you a trick. When you’re faced with an attack from above like that, don’t panic. Just drop into a squat, plant the butt of your spear on the ground, and angle the tip upward. Then you just wait for it to impale itself. Even if that doesn’t kill it, its mobility will be severely restricted."
"Now *that* sounds like something a normal person can do." The group visibly relaxed.
While everyone was crowded around the first climbing zombie, three blond punks, thinking no one was watching, secretly took three cartons of cigarettes from the liquor store, wrapped them up, and hid them in a trash can near the entrance...
The fighting here was intense close-quarters combat in the alleys, so the logistics team was waiting until the area was clear before moving in to collect supplies.
This delay gave the blond punk Sun Yu the perfect opportunity to hide his stash.
As they continued to advance, whenever Sun Yu spotted anything valuable, he would casually stash it in a nearby trash can without anyone noticing.
Yu Dong, in particular, was completely focused on scanning the area for any more climbing zombies.
The combat team pushed steadily forward and finally reached their destination: a construction site that was abandoned mid-project when the apocalypse began.
Parked inside was a vast array of heavy construction machinery.
Excavators, bulldozers, pile drivers, concrete mixers, tower cranes, mobile cranes, dump trucks, forklifts... all the behemoths of the construction world.
"They say our country is an infrastructure fiend. If you want to build fast and build well, it’s all thanks to these machines."
Seeing the worker zombies in hard hats still shambling about inside, Yu Dong gave a wave of his hand.
"Let’s take this construction site!"
Coordinating with their crossbows and spears, the combat team swept through the zombies on the site like an autumn wind scattering fallen leaves. After clearing the area, they still hadn’t found a second climbing zombie.
Yu Dong knew that mutants like the climbing zombie appeared gradually, not all at once. They were still extremely rare, which meant the team could keep moving quickly as long as they stayed on guard.
After clearing out the zombies, Yu Dong took a walk around the construction site. He found that in addition to the heavy machinery, there was also a massive amount of building materials.
Concrete, bricks, cinder blocks, steel bars, rebar, sand, scaffolding... you name it, it was there.
Yu Dong also found a large diesel generator, two welding machines, and plenty of welding rods.
’Sun Shan’s group has been wanting a welding machine. We finally got one.’
Sun Shan and the city defense team were building the main gate for the A Port base. Without welding, the construction would be much more difficult, and the gate wouldn’t be nearly as strong.
To Yu Dong, this construction site, abandoned since the apocalypse, was an absolute treasure trove.
"This is a key resource point for us. These building materials will last us a long time."
"Calling the logistics team. Start hauling. Bring all the machinery and materials back."
"Once we get back, we can start building our dedicated anti-horde defenses."
Yu Dong had already drawn up several blueprints for anti-horde structures.
Construction could start tomorrow.
Just then, Huang Zhiqiang’s voice crackled over the walkie-talkie: "Dongzi, Dongzi! Huanggang Road is totally blocked with cars! Our trucks can’t get through. We need to clear a path first!"
Compared to the wide-open Binhai Avenue, this road was a complete mess. During the initial outbreak, it had become a parking lot, totally gridlocked and impassable.
"Alright. We’ll clear the traffic first. Move the cars one by one to B Port. We can leave them there for everyone to use on Binhai Avenue later."
With Binhai Avenue cleared, all these cars were valuable assets.
