Chapter 225: Chapter 209: Terrifying Zombies, Death

Yu Dong’s three questions all pointed to things he found very strange.

Anyone who regularly killed zombies knew that killing them was easy, but cleaning up after them was hard.

Whether you chose melee or ranged combat, achieving a headshot on a zombie would inevitably spray gore everywhere.

The zombies’ blood, in particular, was thick and foul-smelling. It got everywhere, and most of the time, it was impossible to clean it all up.

Without professional cleaning equipment, it would leave obvious traces in the environment.

And yet this hospital... had very few traces. It was extremely clean.

Even inside the building, it was the same.

But there were no zombies here, which was very strange.

Where were the zombies?

How did they make the hospital so safe?

It was a point that didn’t make any sense.

Faced with Yu Dong’s questioning, the expressions of the three people changed slightly. The male doctor, Liu Yang, cleared his throat and said:

"Most of the zombies in the hospital were actually lured away by others a long time ago. After we closed the doors, there weren’t many left inside. We gradually used noise to draw them out the main entrance. We’ve never actually killed a zombie..."

"Oh? So you’re good at luring zombies. What were you doing in the medical technology building? Where do you live?"

Yu Dong found that hard to believe. He was an old hand at killing, and he knew that many indoor zombies couldn’t be lured out; you had to go in and kill them.

But here, even the indoors was clean.

Liu Yang: "We were bored with nothing to do, so we came to the office to hang out for a bit. We usually live in a separate villa out back."

Yu Dong wasn’t satisfied with either of these explanations.

Just then, the men Qiao Yunliang had sent out returned.

"Chief, we found some strange traces in the basement morgue. There’s a lot of blood, and it’s locked..."

Qiao Yunliang had seemed to be chatting amicably with him, but in reality, he had already sent people to search the entire building.

Hearing the word "morgue," Dr. Liu’s face changed instantly.

Yu Dong: "Why is the morgue locked?"

"It’s nothing... There are just a lot of bodies inside... so it’s locked."

Seeing his expression, it was clear he wasn’t telling the truth. Yu Dong couldn’t be bothered to talk to these three dishonest medical staff anymore.

"Let’s go. We’ll go down and see for ourselves."

Yan Yikai immediately grabbed Liu Yang. "Hurry up! What are you secretly up to?! Spit it out!"

"I... I..." Liu Yang no longer knew what to say, his words becoming incoherent.

It was all coming out now.

Yu Dong had no idea what kind of dirty business these people were involved in...

He just felt that a lot of scum had emerged after the apocalypse.

But since he’d seen it, he had to deal with it, lest they be left behind to harm others.

Qiao Yunliang also shook his head helplessly. He had known for a long time that his teacher had turned into a zombie. Seeing the hospital empty of them, he figured someone must have cleared them out. He hadn’t even wanted to come in, not expecting to find anything else going on.

The group dragged the limp Liu Yang down to the basement, while the two women were escorted from behind by soldiers.

Under the overwhelming force of the army and the combat team, there was nothing they could do to make waves.

Ordinary citizens who did bad things might be able to pick on other ordinary people, but when faced with a formation like this, they could only be scared into a spineless jellyfish like Dr. Liu.

The morgue was on the second basement level of the medical technology building. There was only one large door, which was now locked from the outside with a thick chain.

There were quite a few traces of fresh blood at the entrance, and from inside wafted a stench mixed with the smell of formalin, which was extremely pungent.

CLICK~

Everyone clicked off their safeties in unison, aiming at Liu Yang and the inside of the morgue.

"Open it," Yu Dong commanded.

Liu Yang tried to explain, "Inside are just the bodies of some of the doctors from the building who became zombies... Nothing important. Besides, it’s very dirty and breeding a lot of bacteria and viruses, so we sealed it off. We rarely come here."

"I said open it!"

Someone had already knocked on the door just now; there were no zombies.

With a gun pointed at him, Liu Yang went to open the door. He took a key from his pocket—the very key to the main door’s lock.

"This is a real mistake... You won’t like what’s inside."

Liu Yang took out a surgical mask and put it on, revealing only a pair of gloomy eyes. The trembling from before vanished, and his whole demeanor changed, taking on a unique aura, as professional and sharp as if he were holding a scalpel.

The others kept their distance from him, their guns aimed at the doorway.

CLICK~

Liu Yang undid the chain and pushed open the doors to the morgue.

The basement corridor wasn’t very wide, so only a limited number of people could fit near the entrance.

There was Qiao Yunliang, his aide, and two armed soldiers, along with Yu Dong, Zhao Youcai, Yan Yikai, and Yu Chengfei.

Yu Dong and Zhao Youcai aimed their guns inside.

Yan Yikai readied his crossbow, while Yu Chengfei raised his long spear.

On Qiao Yunliang’s side, all three men raised their guns, ready to open fire at a moment’s notice.

Behind them in the corridor, another line of armed soldiers was on standby.

Just as they were looking nervously toward the morgue... Liu Yang glanced inside after opening it, then casually walked in.

"See, it’s just like I said... Nothing here but filthy corpses and maggots."

Qiao Yunliang’s aide gave a hand signal, and two soldiers were the first to enter the dim morgue with their guns raised. They switched on their tactical flashlights and scanned the area, discovering that some of the beds held bodies covered with white sheets. On the floor were piles of overly decomposed zombie corpses, swarming with all sorts of disgusting maggots.

Besides the large amount of dark red bloodstains, the floor was also covered with a layer of viscous fluid. It was impossible to tell if it was secretions from the insects or the greasy fluid that leaked from rotting corpses... In short, it was utterly nauseating.

The two soldiers, their expressions unchanging, lifted the white sheets one by one, only to find human skeletons. The zombie virus didn’t seem to have infected these bodies; they just lay peacefully on the beds.

"No living things. It’s clear."

Yu Dong walked in, somewhat incredulous, and looked around. He found that it was indeed as Liu Yang had said: piles of zombie corpses, skeletons, and the like.

The corpses in the morgue had long since rotted away, eaten by maggots until only skeletons remained.

It was horrifically filthy.

A hint of smugness appeared in Liu Yang’s eyes.

"I told you... and you didn’t believe me. What else can you do with a broken-down morgue besides storing bodies? We haven’t been here in a long time. Let’s go, be careful not to get infected with some random virus..."

Liu Yang led the way out, looking as if he really disliked the place.

Yu Dong scanned the room again with his flashlight but found nothing else. At the very least, there were no signs of living people—just an overwhelming stench and a filthy environment.

’Am I overthinking this?’

Yu Dong began to doubt his own judgment, but he still felt that these medical staff were hiding something.

’Is it somewhere else?’

Yu Dong walked out of the morgue, preparing to go upstairs with Qiao Yunliang and the others to take a look.

Qiao Yunliang seemed to read his mind. "I’ve already had people check upstairs. They didn’t find anything either. There is a lot of professional medical equipment, though. We can take some of it."

Liu Yang said with a chuckle, "Sure, take whatever you like. We don’t need all this stuff anyway... Without electricity, it’s just a pile of scrap metal."

Seeing Liu Yang so obviously relaxed made Yu Dong feel that something was even more wrong.

"In that case, we’ll have to trouble you three, Dr. Liu, to come with us to the cruise ship and help us assemble and calibrate this equipment."

The assembly was just an excuse. Yu Dong wanted to take the three of them back and hand them over to Officer Wang for questioning... to see what they were hiding.

"We... we won’t go. We don’t know how to use that equipment. We’re a doctor and nurses, not equipment technicians. You’ve got the wrong people!"

"Even so, I’ll have to trouble you to come with us. Take a look at the cruise ship; maybe you’ll like it there."

"There’s no need for this, is there? I’ve been very cooperative... Why are you pushing me so hard?"

Liu Yang’s gaze turned sullen, but Yu Dong didn’t relent.

"Let’s go. We’re heading back."

Liu Yang looked at the soldiers, who clearly didn’t care about his feelings. A strange smile suddenly appeared on his lips beneath the mask, and he shouted:

"Then my family... will have no one to look after them."

"The three of you can come along together."

Just as Yu Dong finished speaking, he suddenly felt a rush of air from above.

A string of viscous saliva dripped down onto the two soldiers bringing up the rear.

The two of them looked up to see a humanoid monster covered in blood-red muscle fibers leaping down from the ceiling, its two large fists smashing down violently.

BANG! BANG!

The two helmeted soldiers were hit squarely by the fists. Their helmets twisted and deformed as a mist of blood exploded from within!!!

Killed instantly!

Hearing the sound, everyone turned around in shock.

A short humanoid monster, only about 1.6 meters tall, was standing behind them.

Its entire body was covered in thick, blood-red muscle striations, as if a world-class bodybuilder had been flayed, leaving only pure, fibrous muscle. Its head was so wrapped in muscle that its eyes bulged out, and its large mouth was filled with sharp fangs. Its fists were exceptionally large.

Other than its short stature, it was a zombie made of incredibly thick, massive muscles!

Its two fists could instantly kill two soldiers right through their helmets.

"Mutated zombie!!!"

Off to the side, Yan Yikai reacted the fastest, raising his crossbow and firing at the zombie’s head!

SWOOSH!

The Crossbow Arrow hit the head directly, but it just stuck in the facial muscles like a toothpick, having no effect at all.

ROAR!!!

The mutated zombie charged toward Yan Yikai!

Its speed was incredible!

BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!

In an instant, Yu Dong, Zhao Youcai, and the soldiers behind them opened fire!

A dense volley of bullets covered the mutated zombie!

But a large number of the bullets were embedded in its tough, red muscle. Even shots that hit the head failed to penetrate, getting stuck in the muscle mass.

Rifle rounds couldn’t even give it a headshot!

This stunned everyone!

They had never encountered a situation like this before.

At this moment, Liu Yang was crouched on the ground, a strange smile on his face, muttering in a low voice:

"You forced my hand... I didn’t intend to move against you. Son, eat them all!"

The zombie seemed to feel pain. After taking the hits, it covered its face with a large hand and charged at Yan Yikai!

As savage as a tank!

In the narrow corridor, there was no room to dodge.

Terror gradually filled Yan Yikai’s eyes.
