Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 273 - 242: The Last Bullet
Chapter 273: Chapter 242: The Last Bullet
Wang Dingbei led the security team, mowing down the zombies that swarmed onto the cruise ship. But his team members were constantly being tackled and devoured.
At that moment, Yu Dong knew... all was lost.
"We’ve failed again..."
He and the demoted members of his core team stood on the highest deck of the cruise ship, watching everything they had built get devoured.
Muscle-bound zombies, climbing zombies, bloated zombies... The number of mutants far exceeded that of the horde Yu Dong had encountered before. Their firepower... it couldn’t keep up with the speed of the horde’s evolution.
Yu Dong had a feeling that, given the circumstances, they would have struggled to hold their ground even without Cai Hong.
With Cai Hong in the picture... it was a guaranteed death sentence.
Shen Xinyi clutched Yu Dong’s arm, her eyes welling with tears. "Will we revive again?"
Liu Ye’ye looked at Yu Dong. "Senior," she said, "if there’s a next life... you all should go on without me. Don’t look for me."
Huang Zhiqiang cursed, "Shit! If we’re going to die, we’re going to die! Youcai’s already dead anyway... Big deal, we’ll just start over. Dongzi, if you really do revive, listen to me. Go to my home in the northeastern countryside. We’ll be post-apocalyptic farmers. I guarantee we won’t have to deal with any zombie hordes!"
Zhou Jian’guo sighed. "We still didn’t make it to Kyoto."
Yan Yikai clenched his fists. "Brother Dong, you have to find me again in the next life! I’m not done living like this yet. I want to keep things this exciting!"
After everything that had happened to him recently, Zhao Wenjie was just numb.
"Why does everyone have to lie to me... Brother Dong, can’t a man and a woman just have a sweet, simple romance? If there’s a next life, Brother Dong... can you set me up with someone?"
Qiao Ping held her child and looked down at her defeated uncle. She finally realized something important.
"Yu Dong, I know my uncle wronged you, but... he’s not a bad person. If you really do have a next life, don’t give up on him. He’s fighting for the people, too."
Yu Chengfei sighed. "In a situation like this, what good are martial arts, no matter how skilled you are? Yu Dong, is everything I taught... just too outdated?"
Yu Dong looked at his people and gave them a resolute smile.
"We’ll get to start over. We will. I promise I’ll find a better path..."
He had failed in this life.
’Handing power over to someone else hadn’t made things any better.’
’The people he trusted were the ones who ultimately led him to his death.’
At this point, whether he was reborn or not, there was no longer any reason to hold on.
"Zhou, it’s time for us to go."
Zhou Jian’guo said, "Yeah..."
Yu Dong looked at Zhou Jian’guo, and Zhou Jian’guo looked back at him.
After fifteen seconds of silence.
Yu Dong spoke. "Don’t tell me you can’t whip up some explosives at a time like this?"
"Qiao Yunliang took it all... Don’t you have a gun?"
"They took it a while ago."
An awkward silence filled the air.
They had no way to kill themselves.
Hearing a scrabbling sound from below, two climbing zombies hauled themselves over the edge!
ROAR!!!
’Damn it, don’t tell me I’m going to get eaten by zombies *again* this time! That shit hurts!’
Yu Dong would rather be blown up; at least that would be over in an instant.
The others grew fearful as well. Being eaten by zombies... was just too terrifying.
Just then.
BANG! BANG!
Two gunshots cracked through the air. Wang Dingbei came running up with Lin Mo and Lin Zhixue.
After dropping the two climbing zombies with two shots, Wang Dingbei yelled, "What are you all doing just standing there on the deck! Get back inside!"
The group quickly followed him back into Yu Dong’s suite.
Seeing the gun in Wang Dingbei’s hand, Yu Dong finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Wang, kill us."
"No! My gun is for killing zombies and bad guys, not good people."
Wang Dingbei knew the situation was hopeless, but he was still unwilling to accept it.
"That’s bullshit. You mowed down a whole row of good people."
"..."
"Give me the gun."
Since Wang Dingbei couldn’t bring himself to do it, Yu Dong would do it himself.
He refused to let his people be eaten by zombies.
Wang Dingbei hesitated for a moment, then finally handed over the gun.
Yu Dong looked around at his friends.
"Believe me," he said. "We’ll be back!"
At a moment like this, all Yu Dong could do was offer them hope. Anything less would be too cruel.
Yu Dong’s expression was calm as he turned to Liu Ye’ye.
"We’ll start with you, Ye Ye. You’re the most easily frightened."
"Hold me," Liu Ye’ye said with a pout, unable to stop herself from asking for a hug.
Yu Dong hugged Liu Ye’ye... BANG!
He killed her with a single shot.
He turned to Shen Xinyi.
Tears streamed down Shen Xinyi’s face as she embraced Yu Dong. "In the next life... love Ye Ye, alright? Don’t save me. I’ve been a terrible person in this life..."
BANG!
Yu Dong killed Shen Xinyi.
Lin Zhixue stared into Yu Dong’s eyes. "Don’t forget what you promised me..."
BANG!
One shot, then another, and another...
Yu Dong shot all of his loved ones and dearest friends.
Blood splattered across his hands, blurring his vision.
He never closed his eyes, never looked away. He knew that getting to this point... wasn’t anyone’s fault.
’It was his own fault.’
’He was the one who had failed to lead these people, who had believed in him, to a path of survival.’
He had to remember every friend he killed with his own hands.
After killing all his friends, Yu Dong aimed the gun at Lin Mo.
"Dr. Lin, it’s your turn."
"However you decide to deal with Commander Qiao in the next life, remember our passphrase. Come find me, and I’ll follow you."
Yu Dong pressed his lips together, nodded, and pulled the trigger.
CLICK.
He was out of bullets.
Lin Mo was dumbfounded, and Yu Dong froze.
The last bullet had been fired.
"Officer Wang, another magazine."
"That was the last one..."
"Dr. Lin, what about your gun?"
"They took it away a while back..."
Yu Dong, Lin Mo, and Wang Dingbei stared at each other, at a loss for words.
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!
The sound of heavy pounding came from outside the door. The zombie horde had already overrun the cruise ship.
