Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 298 - 256: The Old Man and the Entrepreneur
Chapter 298: Chapter 256: The Old Man and the Entrepreneur
Even though he knew there was an internal problem, Yu Dong had to restrain himself. He couldn’t call anyone.
Because he knew he had no privacy from the moment he stepped into the Shuangyang Building.
Everything was likely being monitored by Yin Shuangyang.
His actions would directly expose his plan and implicate the others he had already put in place.
At the same time, he was also reflecting on a problem.
Why had the prediction for Sunday night’s Powerball succeeded, while the one for Tuesday night had failed?
Yu Dong believed... the ones activated on Sunday were all [Leaders]. Their insight and intellect were a cut above ordinary people. The fact that they could survive the apocalypse and lead teams of several hundred made them all heroes in their own right.
Yu Dong only needed to tell them not to buy a lottery ticket, and they wouldn’t.
It was an unspoken understanding among intelligent people.
That was why the verification that night was a success, establishing a deep relationship of trust with the several [Leaders].
But the Tuesday night Powerball was the key Yu Dong had left for these [Leaders] to activate their core team members from the previous life.
These people... were a mixed bag. They might have outstanding abilities in certain areas, but their overall caliber was clearly not as high as the [Leaders’]. Even though Yu Dong had specifically written ’Don’t buy!!!’ in the third key of every [Rebirth Manual (Part 1)], it was still possible that someone had tempted fate.
’Once the number of people grows, they become the most important variable. Things will no longer be completely under control.’
’This third key is too easily influenced by human factors.’
Unfortunately, Yu Dong hadn’t paid special attention to this sort of thing in his past life. He had even remembered the Powerball numbers on a whim, thinking that if he ever got another chance at rebirth, he could use them to quickly acquire funds. But Liu Ye’ye had talked him out of it, reasoning that the deadline to claim the prize was too far out; even if he won, he wouldn’t be able to spend the money.
So, he only remembered the Powerball numbers for that Sunday and Tuesday. He hadn’t paid any attention to the ones after that.
Information doesn’t just appear in your head out of thin air.
When Ji Luo’s stunning three-key theory was first released in the previous life, and it came to the [Third Key: A precise prediction of a future public event], the only thing Yu Dong could think of was the Powerball.
It was the only card he had to play.
He had to play this card.
Unfortunately, this card had been ruined by one of his own people.
Yu Dong didn’t know which team had produced such a fool, but it had seriously disrupted his plans.
Before last night, his plan had been executed perfectly. The ’Yu Dong’ he presented to Yin Shuangyang, and Yin Shuangyang’s reactions, were almost exactly what his team had simulated in the previous life...
He had boarded this ship and gained immense support.
Yin Shuangyang’s power would change the landscape of Yanhai City. Then, using that as a foundation, it would radiate out to the surrounding cities, helping Yu Dong achieve his ultimate goal...
But after the failed Powerball prediction, everything had become murky and uncertain.
Although Yin Shuangyang had said last night that he would still trust him and continue their work, how could things possibly stay the same...
Yu Dong spent the whole night wondering what Yin Shuangyang would do next.
But there was nothing he could do to change it. He could only take it one step at a time and adapt as things happened.
He would try his best to get things back on their predetermined track.
......
「Wednesday, 7:00 AM.」
After waking up in his luxury suite on the 44th floor of the Twin Towers, Yu Dong followed one of Yin Shuangyang’s secretaries—a woman with a typical influencer face—to the executive dining room.
Yin Shuangyang had a lot of female secretaries, all of them beautiful. It got to the point where Yu Dong was starting to get face blindness.
As Yu Dong walked in, a waiter was just serving Yin Shuangyang a bowl of plain noodle soup. Yin Shuangyang was seated at one of the short ends of a large, rectangular dining table, with a single chair at the other short end.
"You’re here, Brother Yu. Sit. Order whatever you like."
Yu Dong sat down, a distance of three meters separating him from Yin Shuangyang, and simply watched him eat his noodles.
SLURP~~~
Yin Shuangyang picked up a small bundle of chewy noodles with his chopsticks, blew on it, and stuffed it into his mouth. His cheeks puffed out dramatically as he chewed the noodles in a few bites before swallowing, then he picked up the next bundle.
He was breaking into a sweat just from eating a bowl of plain noodle soup.
Yu Dong looked at the menu, then said to the influencer-faced secretary, "I’ll have the same thing as President Yin."
"PHEW... A guy your age probably isn’t used to this kind of food. It’s too plain for you. You look like the type to eat a whole bowl of authentic Anhui-style noodles with extra spice and toppings. It’s usually old folks, the ones with all sorts of health problems who can’t handle flavorful food, who eat like this."
Yin Shuangyang wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"Eating something light in the morning is more comfortable."
"Speaking of old folks... Brother Yu, I hear you usually volunteer at nursing homes, right?"
Yu Dong’s eyes narrowed. He then said calmly, "That was before I was reborn."
"I go too. You see that new medical equipment at the nursing home? The new exercise machines, the new buildings and beds? Chances are I’m the one who donated them... But did you know that some of those old people don’t know what’s good for them?"
"Oh? How so?"
"They spend the money I donated, live in the building I donated, use the equipment I donated... and then when they see me, they get together behind my back to curse me out, talking about my past. The worst was when one of them spat at me and then threw themselves on the ground, rolling around and making a scene... Tell me, isn’t that just not knowing what’s good for them?"
"It’s hard to change an old person’s way of thinking. Once they form a stereotype about someone, they’ll probably be that way for life. I usually don’t bother arguing with them too much."
"Hehehe... Brother Yu, you must be a real volunteer, you’ve got a lot of experience. Not me. I just do it for show. In reality, I don’t know a single one of the old men and women I take pictures with. But you know what? ... Now, whenever I go to any nursing home, a crowd of old folks gathers around me, treats me wonderfully, and looks forward to my visit every month. And I’ve never argued with them, not even a single word. Do you know how I did it?"
