Elden Ring: Starting as Melina’s Sister
Ch. 133 If Mia and the others hadn't appeared in time
For Isdis, this trip could be described as a mess. He had encountered the wrong people at the wrong time and place, wasting his travel expenses and the money spent on hiring bodyguards for nothing.
If Mia and the others hadn’t appeared in time, Isdis would be stone-cold dead by now.
Therefore, he truly thanked these benefactors from the bottom of his heart.
Isdis was originally an islander. Most islanders chose to resell their goods to middlemen in the city, who would then take them to other cities for sale.
But Isdis didn’t want those annoying middlemen to pocket the price difference, so he bought a carriage himself, hired three men, and set out south from Bangor.
Everyone knew the rest of the story.
The goods Isdis had brought back essentially untouched would not lack buyers in the city. Compared to his purchase price, selling them to middlemen could still yield a small profit.
But he had already made up his mind. He had a plan in his heart: after handing over his goods to other merchants, he would keep only forty percent of the principal and profit for himself and give the rest to his benefactors.
“Mr. Isdis, please wait a moment!”
“Hm?” Isdis pulled the horses to a stop, and the vehicle came to a halt beside the stone plaza in the city center.
Artoria flipped down from the side of the carriage bed and ran toward a bulletin board standing in a corner of the plaza.
Standing beside the bulletin board was a man in a brightly colored uniform, holding a piece of parchment and announcing something to the citizens.
However, the citizens merely passed by the bulletin board; few stopped to linger.
It seemed that whatever the man was announcing was already common knowledge.
Seeing Artoria run over, Kay also got off the carriage and followed on foot.
‘Oh?’
On the other side, noticing Artoria’s actions, Mia also stood up in the carriage bed.
It’s here!
Taking commissions from a bulletin board is a traditional activity of fantasy worlds!
Like a player entering a new map in a game, Mia also excitedly jumped down from the carriage.
Walking up to Artoria, Kay put his hands on his hips and remarked, “There’s a bulletin board here too. Haven’t seen one of these in a while.”
The two villages they had passed along the way didn’t have such facilities, or if they did, there were no commissions on them.
In the village where the two of them used to live, there was such a thing, and occasionally commoners would post notices on it.
Before Mia even got close, she heard the man by the bulletin board shouting.
“Regarding the public notice of the execution by hanging of ‘Red Ghost’ Niervis: Citizens of Bangor! On behalf of our King Quidolin, I announce a piece of heartening news…”
After finishing one passage, the man paused and then began reading another.
“Rogit of the Apple Orchard seeks to borrow a plow! He says: Hello everyone, can anyone lend me a plow? I’ve had the devil’s own luck; I hit a rock in the field and bent half the plow…”
Mia leaned in next to Artoria, looking over her shoulder at the notices posted on the board: “What’s on there?”
“Hmm… hmm…” Artoria rubbed her chin, reading seriously.
Mia also looked closely.
“Speaking of which, how many people can actually read what’s written on there?” Mia asked.
“Look,” Kay jerked his chin toward the town crier, “what do you think that guy’s job is?”
The crier had finished reading another notice; he took a sip of water and began the next: “People of the West, listen well! If you still long for freedom, then be ready to take up arms at any time! We are growing stronger by the day, and the counterattack is within sight! Let us swear by our sacrificed forefathers that we would rather die for our country than become slaves of a foreign land!”
“Hmm…”
It seemed like a job that required a lot of saliva.
The notices on the board weren’t written on parchment and hung up; instead, they used thin wooden boards as a base with ink written on top.
Parchment was a very precious item.
Three Pigs Tavern Opening Announcement”
“Holders of a State-signed Special Poverty Certificate may go to the relief station near the inner city gate to receive food rations”
“For the construction of the monastery, long-term procurement of high-quality stone; those interested please proceed to the City Hall”
“Shameless! The Catholic Church is illegally logging the Sacred Grove to build a monastery!”
“Rumor Refutation! Bishop Deniol has always advocated for the harmonious coexistence between Catholicism and local paganism, developing Catholicism with British characteristics and respecting British folk customs.”
It didn’t look like there were any commissions worth taking.
“But this is also a good thing!” Artoria said optimistically. “If there are no commissions, doesn’t that just show that the people here have no troubles?”
“But the opportunities for training have also decreased.”
“That’s not it, Brother Kay.” Artoria shook her head. “I don’t think training must rely on combat. Even just living in a city, feeling the lives of the city people, and understanding the rules of how a city operates is also a necessary part of the training to become a King.”
“Oh,” Kay was stunned for a moment, then smiled and scratched the back of his head.
“Artoria has grown up too.”
Compared to not long ago, when she was still Kay’s squire, acting almost entirely on the instructions of others and accepting others’ teachings with almost no thoughts of her own…
The girl saying these words now had truly grown a lot.
“Mm… mm.” Artoria felt a bit bashful at being praised.
“Alright, alright, let’s go find a place to stay.”
Kay laughed, rubbing Artoria’s head and pressing down that proud ahoge.
“Kay… Brother Kay!” Artoria forcefully moved Kay’s hand away. “Didn’t we agree not to do this after I turned twelve…”
“I forgot, sorry.” Apologizing with absolutely zero sincerity, Kay withdrew his palm.
Since they hadn’t found anything of value on the bulletin board, the group began heading back toward the carriage.
Just then, someone suddenly called out to them.
“That young man there!”
A fishy smell characteristic of a fisherman wafted over.
The three of them looked over simultaneously. The one calling out was a pot-bellied man wearing a patterned short jacket.
“Are you calling me?” Kay pointed at himself.
“Yes, yes,” the pot-bellied fishmonger ran up with a waddle, took two breaths, and nodded vigorously.
“Young man, are you looking for work?”
The fishmonger asked.
Looking at the young man before him.
Dazzling blond hair, a handsome profile and facial contours that were perfectly flawless, long limbs, a sturdy build, and a powerful physique.
At the moment, Kay wasn’t wearing armor, but with his sword at his side, he looked distinguished and exceptionally talented.
Add to that the pair of girls following him…
At least, the fishmonger, being a man himself, felt in his heart that Kay was extraordinary.
“Ah,” Kay paused.
“Actually, she’s the one looking for a commission…” Kay honestly pushed Artoria forward.
“Oh,” the fishmonger looked Artoria over and asked, “May I ask what the relationship between you two is?”
“Me? Well, I’m her brother.”
Kay nodded in response.
The fishmonger breathed a sigh of relief.
In that case, the one doing the work would still be this reliable adult man, right?
“Excuse me, do you have some trouble?” Artoria asked enthusiastically.
The fishmonger began his story: “I happen to have a job here…”
