Elden Ring: Starting as Melina’s Sister
Ch. 69 Mia's Spell
Mia walked out of the basement.
Her mind was completely occupied with thoughts about ‘new spells’.
When she reached the surface, she found Kalé wasn’t there.
Patches was squatting on the ground, idly teasing a frog he had picked up from somewhere with a blade of grass.
Lappland was napping by the campfire not far away.
Wilden sat by the campfire, staring at the stew bubbling on the rack over the fire.
“Practicing again today?” Wilden asked, turning his head as Mia emerged.
Over this month, Mia, with her high enthusiasm for learning, wasn’t satisfied with just studying Glintstone Magic.
Every night after class, if she had time, she would go find Wilden to practice martial arts.
Not just swordsmanship, but also techniques for using polearms.
Swordsmanship went without saying.
As for polearm usage… although Mia had already shelved the spear, after learning Carian Slicer…
Mia was surprised to find that the stargazing staff combined with Carian Slicer could be used exactly like a spear.
Moreover, the magic-formed blade could only be blocked by something equally imbued with magic.
Ordinary rocks and swords would simply be cleanly cut by the magic blade, as convenient as a lightsaber in sci-fi.
Naturally, Mia, having found a new toy, began learning polearm techniques again.
Of course, during practice, she still used a physical spear. Otherwise, with the cutting power of the magic blade, nothing could block it.
However, today, when faced with Wilden’s invitation, Mia shook her head.
“Not today.”
Because Teacher Sellen had assigned homework.
Scanning the camp and not seeing Kalé, Mia asked, “Where’s Kalé?”
Patches didn’t even look up, yawning. “Said he went looking for a salt mine. Left in the morning, hasn’t come back yet.”
Wilden added, “Texas went with him.”
After spending time together, Wilden could more or less distinguish the three wolves now.
Mia glanced at Patches a couple more times.
A month of peaceful coexistence had allowed Patches to barely earn the trust of a few people.
Even the wolves watching him weren’t as vigilant anymore.
Patches hadn’t tried to escape again, seemingly remembering the oath he swore a month ago.
Although he still wasn’t given any weapons for self-defense, and Kalé didn’t let him touch his things…
It was still much better than being tied up and dragged along at the beginning.
Compared to a month ago, this campsite had also undergone quite a few changes.
During this month, while Mia was immersed in learning, the idle Wilden and Kalé hadn’t been idle either; they started studying how to repair structures.
They went to the nearby grove to cut trees, then used the wood to repair the three walls of the campsite and made some furniture like chairs.
Now, it was a sturdy campsite amidst the ruins, offering a distant view of the road.
Mia left the camp, heading through a gap in the wall to the clearing where the Pumpkin Head Soldier and the giant Miranda Flower had fought a month ago.
“A new spell…”
Those two examples Teacher Sellen gave.
Starlight of different colors.
So what could she do?
The girl pondered.
If she also researched starlight… wouldn’t she fail the plagiarism check?
And Teacher Sellen would definitely look down on her, right?
Mia thought.
To create a new spell based on an existing one, you must have a deep understanding of that prototype spell.
But as Teacher Sellen said, Mia currently lacked proficiency.
Almost all knowledge about Glintstone Magic was in Mia’s mind, but she only knew the theory, with almost no practical experience.
Only after Sellen taught Mia a spell would Mia try casting it once. Then, Teacher Sellen would immediately flip to the next chapter and teach her the next spell.
“…” It was pure cramming. It seemed Teacher Sellen really wanted Mia to become a proper mage as quickly as possible.
It couldn’t be said this cramming method was ineffective. After all, with the Magic Mirror Realm’s enhancement, the knowledge was truly crammed into Mia’s head. Now, Mia could be considered a more purist academic than most academics.
First, try recasting all the learned spells, see if she could find some leads.
As for the spell target, it was that twisted pumpkin helmet that had been lying on the ground for a long time, untouched.
‘Glintstone Pebble—’
Mia raised her stargazing staff. A cyan streak of light shot out from the tip.
It made a *thud* upon hitting the twisted pumpkin helmet.
“Hmm…”
Pausing for a moment, Mia cast glintstone Swift Pebble.
Although the stronger the caster’s own power, the greater the spell’s potency, fundamentally different from Prayer, Glintstone Magic was cast strictly according to formulas.
No matter how strong one’s magic power, when casting Glintstone Pebble, if one didn’t activate the magic circuit according to the formula that increased Glintstone Pebble’s flight speed, one couldn’t cast glintstone Swift Pebble.
Even if your Glintstone Pebble was powerful enough to blow up a city in one shot, it would still be Glintstone Pebble.
Its flight speed couldn’t match glintstone Swift Pebble’s.
Because in the formula ‘Glintstone Pebble = X’, there was no variable to increase its speed.
Moreover, the Glintstone Pebble formula also lacked a variable to accumulate magic power.
That is to say, no matter how powerful Glintstone Pebble was, it couldn’t be charged. This spell depended on the caster’s instantaneous magic output.
The Glintstone Pebble that could be charged and released was called glintstone Comet.
More complex than Glintstone Pebble, ordinary people found it even more difficult to learn.
Mia cast another Glintstone Pebble.
She carefully savored every process of this spell.
The young girl suddenly thought of something, rummaged through her personal space for a while, and found a textbook teaching elementary magic from a pile of books.
Waving her staff, starlight appeared above her head. Mia tucked the staff under her arm and used the starlight to flip through the textbook in her hands.
In the chapter on Glintstone Pebble, stripping away the complex formulas, diagrams, experiential guidance, exercises, and so on that Mia already understood, the seven or eight pages of content could be completely condensed into this one sentence.
“Glintstone Pebble: releasing magical pebbles from the glintstone on the staff is the starting point of the journey of exploring magic.”
The essence of this spell is to use magic to condense Glintstone Pebbles, then fire them out.
So…
Mia fell into deep thought.
This is actually magic that converts energy into matter.
While thinking, Mia cast Glintstone Pebble again.
This time, she didn’t aim at the pumpkin helmet but released the Glintstone Pebble into the sky.
The physical pebble trailed a cyan magical tail, turning into a thin, reverse-flying comet, flying toward the Erdtree thousands of miles away.
Of course, it couldn’t fly that far; the pebble dissipated at the far end of the sky.
As matter condensed by magic, the pebble was fleeting.
“In that case…” Mia suddenly had an idea for creating a spell.
Clatter, clatter, she poured out more books from her personal space.
Finding a relatively flat piece of ground, she held a reference book and began writing with a piece of glintstone in her hand.
Of course, before starting research, she first cast a Magic Mirror Realm on herself.
Although the Magic Mirror Realm Mia cast didn’t carry the experience and inspiration of a great mage, it at least allowed one’s attention to be more focused and thinking to be clearer.
The formulas of Glintstone Magic are like programming.
If one treats the formula ‘a certain spell = D + A’ as a program, then it means that connecting code ‘D’ and code ‘A’ can form a runnable’Spell X’.
Teacher Sellen had taught her that there are 118 characteristics of magic nodules and magic circuits within glintstone.
