Chapter 457: The Price of Entry

  • Next Chapter

The spatial transit platform completed its descent through the muted crimson and gold light surrounding Avaris and settled within a broad arrival station near the edge of the city's commercial region. Its transparent shell dissolved, allowing the scents of refined herbs and heated furnace stone to enter as formation pillars recorded the passengers' profiles and assigned their arrival routes. Adrian and Hestia passed beneath the nearest arch with the other merchants, drawing no more attention than two additional Rule Stage cultivators arriving to conduct business.

The streets beyond the station did not repeat the outer market on a larger scale. That market had been built around products already harvested, refined, or unloaded from arriving vessels, and most transactions ended with sealed crates being transferred from one owner to another.

Avaris controlled what would exist months and years later. Its contract halls reserved the output of entire medicine gardens and furnace districts, while the principal wholesale exchange displayed future harvests, available refinement periods, and the portions of each product category that remained after existing obligations had been removed. Serious buyers came here not to purchase whatever happened to be available, but to shape what Nerath would produce next.

The people themselves offered no similarly dramatic difference. Solvaren alchemists in deep-red and pale-gold robes hurried between appointments, young clan members carried samples for their seniors, and families stopped at food halls before separating toward the residential transports. Adrian's perception found the same mixture of ambition, fatigue, affection, irritation, and professional rivalry that he had sensed in the outer market. Avaris revealed where the clan's prosperity was organized, but not what any of its people believed about the power governing their lives.

Hestia did not pause at the exchanges or allow herself to be drawn toward the furnace towers. She continued along the central avenue with Adrian following half a step behind her, his attention moving between the city and the route she selected without offering to take the lead.

They eventually reached one of the mana-rich rivers crossing Avaris. Several wide bridges connected the commercial region to the inner districts beyond it, but the bridges were restricted. Crimson-and-gold formations rose from the water on either side, joining above the river to form a layered boundary that curved around the heart of the city, restricting the bridges. Solvaren members passed through after their clan crests were read, while the few outsiders permitted beyond the barrier carried temporary tokens and remained beside designated escorts.

Past the boundary, commercial towers gave way to broad residential compounds, private medicine gardens, and furnace halls whose entrances displayed no public catalogues. Farther inward, the highest Solvaren tower marked the governing district that held the clan's leadership and ancestral records.

"The city was divided this way before I left," Hestia said. "The outer districts received merchants and handled public trade, while the clan members lived within the inner districts beyond the bridge. The clan elders should be there."

Adrian observed the bridges and the formation covering the entire heart of the city. The formation was made of a divine concept that protected the entire city. Even if Adrian used the arcane concept of shadow, they would be detected by the formation. He possessed no divine concept tailored for concealment with enough mastery to be capable of slipping past a barrier of this calibre.

"Do you have a method to enter the inner districts?" Adrian asked.

Hestia nodded. "If the clan's methods survived along with everything else, we just need to become high-value customers to enter."

She opened the current Avaris directory through UNI-OS. The names of the offices had changed, and several functions that had once belonged to a single hall were now divided among specialized departments, but Hestia found what she wanted within the central commercial registry. A route appeared toward the Solvaren Central Commission Hall, an institution authorized to negotiate orders beyond the limits of the ordinary wholesale exchange.

"It survived," she said. "There was a guest contract pavilion within the inner districts. Any agreement that committed too many furnaces, gardens, or senior alchemists had to be finalized there by an elder. It's the perfect opportunity to get the information we needed."

Hestia closed the directory and turned away from the river. Adrian followed without questioning the method she had chosen.

They crossed several avenues before the Central Commission Hall appeared between two appraisal towers. Unlike the open exchanges, its entrance contained no displayed pills or herb cases. Contract formations filled the high interior walls instead, each recording the quantities, refinement periods, purity requirements, and collection schedules of orders still under negotiation. Most visitors waited within screened alcoves accompanied by assistants, indicating that merchants rarely entered this hall without already knowing precisely what they intended to purchase.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Hestia approached an unoccupied reception platform. The Solvaren woman behind it was an Early Rule Stage cultivator whose pale-gold sleeve markings identified her as a senior commercial administrator. The screen in front of her displayed the Basic UNI-OS profiles of Hestia and Adrian. She lingered on the lack of recorded commercial history for a moment, then returned to Hestia without open suspicion.

"What form of commission are you seeking?" she asked.

"A direct supply contract," Hestia answered. "Rule Perception pills, Supplementary pills refined from Moon-Silver Root, and the unrefined plants used in both."

The administrator raised one hand, and a catalogue opened above the platform. "The principal exchange can supply all three categories. If you provide the quantity and desired collection point, I can direct you to the appropriate wholesale office."

"The exchange cannot supply the quantity we require." Hestia adjusted the figures within the catalogue, requesting enough finished products to occupy twelve high-capacity furnace towers for one standard UNI-Year.

She then added raw plants equal to one quarter of the materials those same towers would consume, all of it subject to uniform purity checks. "I will pick up the completed consignments directly. No transport service is required."

The administrator's expression changed as the commission formation calculated the request. The finished products were high-tier products by Solvaren standards, and the quantity would support an entire growing organization. The raw plants created a second difficulty, because releasing that much unrefined stock would consume almost one third of the clan's currently uncommitted plant allocation and reduce what other furnace towers could produce during the same period.

Dark-gold lines appeared across the projected figures first, marking the quantities already owed to Ebon Meridian. Keldovan taxes and previously accepted contracts followed, leaving the open commercial allocation beneath them. The requested order did not exceed what Nerath could produce, but it exceeded anything the public exchange had the mandate to reserve.

"This would require allocations from multiple gardens and furnace districts," the administrator said. "The public commission office cannot guarantee the raw plants and pills at this proportion, and it needed to be approved by a commission elder. What institution are you purchasing for?"

"The purchase is private," Hestia replied, and she also caught the suspicion and doubt in the administrator's voice. "You don't need to worry. The full estimated value can be placed in escrow before the internal review."

The administrator studied Hestia for several seconds, then checked the two profiles again. They lacked commercial history, but both remained valid, unrestricted, and tied to the same signatures the hall had already recorded. Their request also concerned only products approved for foreign sale, while payment in advance removed the clan's financial risk.

"UNI-Coins or mana crystals are accepted," she said at last. "The escrow will remain sealed until the clan accepts or rejects the commission. If the terms cannot be agreed upon, the deposit will be returned after the standard verification charge."

Hestia extended one hand, and the spatial ring on one of her fingers released a reinforced case onto the empty receiving platform beside the administrator. Then another followed, and another, each one filled with precisely cut mana crystals whose combined light became bright enough for the platform's filtering formation to activate. By the time the final case settled into place, several administrators at the neighboring stations had stopped pretending not to watch.

The receiving formation closed around the cases and began counting their contained mana. Lines of pale light passed through every crystal to test purity, foreign contamination, and concealed essence, while the projected escrow value rose above the desk. Hestia had deposited the entire estimated value. The total value was around 150 million UNI-Coins, a substantial private commission at the Solvaren Clan's level.

The administrator's manner remained professional, but the caution reserved for two unknown Basic-profile travelers had been replaced by the attention given to a highly esteemed client.

"The escrow has been verified," she said. "A senior commission elder has agreed to review the production allocation from the Guest Contract Pavilion within the inner district. You may enter the inner districts for that purpose under escort."

Two narrow crimson tokens formed above the platform. Pale-gold lines recorded Adrian's and Hestia's temporary mana signatures, the approved route, the commission reference, and the period for which the authorization would remain valid. The tokens permitted entry through only one bridge and movement between the inner checkpoint and the guest pavilion. Any deviation would invalidate their authorization and alert the escort formation.

Hestia accepted hers without hesitation. Adrian took the second and allowed its light to settle around his altered signature.

A Mid Rule Stage Solvaren member arrived several minutes later to guide them. He confirmed the commission reference, offered no unnecessary questions, and led them back toward the river.

At one of the bridges, the surrounding formation examined their profiles, temporary tokens, escort, and shared commission reference. Crimson light passed over their bodies, followed by the pressure of Ebon Meridian's higher formation. Neither layer found anything beyond the two Rule Stage identities. A section of the inner boundary separated, revealing a road bordered by private medicine gardens and the quiet compounds of the Solvaren Clan.

Hestia crossed first, and the commercial noise diminished as the formation closed behind them. Ahead, the road curved toward the Guest Contract Pavilion and the governing district beyond it, following a path Hestia had once walked as the mortal patriarch of the clan. For the first time since returning to Nerath, no public market stood between her and the descendants who could tell her whether they regarded Ebon Meridian's covenant as a chain or as the bargain that had kept them alive.
