Chapter 796 - 679: Who Am I?
Chapter 796: Chapter 679: Who Am I?
The monster seemed thoroughly enraged by its own predicament, unleashing a painful and manic roar, spewing hot, muddled air from its nostrils.
In the next moment, it abruptly clenched the hand that held the head, and a terrifying burst of strength erupted.
"Bang!"
With a muffled sound, the head exploded like a ripe watermelon, splattering a mixture of red and white everywhere, some even landing on the monster’s mask and robe.
Zhang Liyou forced down the urge to vomit and her intense fear, secretly sensing the aura surrounding the monster.
She could distinctly feel the chaotic yet immensely powerful energy contained within its body, especially the turbulent, nearly overflowing blood energy, which in her keen perception felt like a volcano on the brink of eruption, filled with danger.
As she sensed, the monster seemed to be sharply aware of something, suddenly lifting its head and swiftly looking towards the corner where Zhang Liyou was hiding.
Zhang Liyou quickly withdrew her head and pushed the [Turtle Breath Technique] to its extreme, lowering her presence to the minimum, as if she had become one with the wall.
The monster stared puzzledly in that direction, its nostrils flaring, sniffing something in the air.
But it only smelled a heavy scent of blood, the confusion in its eyes under the mask lasted for a few seconds, ultimately shifting away, once again engulfed by immense pain and disorientation.
"Who am I? Who exactly am I? Why am I missing a head... Who? Who took my head?!"
It began to murmur to itself again, its voice sometimes insane, sometimes pitiful, echoing like a lost child in the deep, silent alley, broken and twisted.
The voice seemed not to emerge from the throat but squeezed out from a heap of broken viscera, carrying a raspy sound of blood froth and phlegm, making it spine-chilling.
Zhang Liyou listened from outside the corner, her heart pounding and body shivering with cold.
Strangely, she felt a bizarre familiarity with the horrific and grotesque scene unfolding before her.
...The floodgates of memory abruptly opened, and she remembered!
It was the deranged scientist who fought fiercely with Feng Yuhuai in the sewers, who used cruel methods to assemble several humanoid monsters into one... a multi-headed, multi-handed, multi-legged human spider.
The monster before her felt extremely similar, similarly that kind of mad creation put together chaotically.
Chaos, pain, filled with the utmost desecration of life forms.
The difference was that the giant spider in the sewer was pieced together by others, whereas the monster before her was piecing itself together.
"This monster is searching for its lost head? Who... which lunatic created this monster?"
Zhang Liyou felt a piercing chill, suddenly snapping her gaze to the monster’s already tattered black robe and that dark, opaque mask.
Although the robe was ragged and the mask sullied, neither bore any branding but seemed somewhat reminiscent of the legendary...
Zhang Liyou’s heart surged with crashing waves, an unbelievable name abruptly struck her mind – Night Watcher?!
She thought she must be insane, Night Watchers are the ones who specialize in killing monsters, how could a Night Watcher become a monster?
Then, she heard the monster’s roar from inside again:
"Who am I? Who am I? Ahhhh—monster! Monsters should die! I want to kill monsters, kill all monsters...Ahhhh—none shall remain!"
Zhang Liyou’s mind went blank, realizing it wasn’t her who was insane, but the monster inside.
The next instant, the monster’s roar sharply intensified, becoming frenzied and incoherent:
"Kill monsters, kill kill kill kill kill kill, where are monsters, kill monsters!"
Zhang Liyou: "....."
She really wanted to remind the creature that the monster was right there, but she dared not make a sound.
Mainly because her answer might not be correct.
From the perspective of human aesthetics, the other party is a monster, but based on its own, if assessed from monster aesthetics, maybe... humans are the monsters.
Immediately, a dense sound of bones rubbing against hard surfaces resonated.
Then, she saw the monster’s five legs and four hands exerting force simultaneously, its entire misshapen massive body agilely leaping high like a bloated humanoid spider, swiftly stepping on the tall walls of the alley, climbing upwards.
Broken stone chips fell softly; in an instant, the monster’s figure vanished above the rooftops.
Zhang Liyou pressed tightly against the wall, not daring to move, holding her breath and waiting for an apparently endless time, until the monster’s noise and aura completely faded from her sensory range, before she exhaled longly.
Her legs felt as soft as overcooked noodles, almost unable to support her body, her back already soaked with cold sweat, sticking icily to her skin, while still pressed against the chilly, damp wall, causing spasms of shivers.
She cautiously sensed her surroundings once again, confirming no sign of life in the corner, before she moved away from the corner and stepped inside.
The scene was unbearably tragic.
Broken limbs, splattered entrails, coagulated dark red blood... painting a hellish picture.
Zhang Liyou’s face was pale, her stomach churning, but she forcibly suppressed the discomfort, her gaze rapidly and meticulously scanning the scene.
Her sight was quickly drawn to something seemingly inconspicuous next to the corpse.
It was a thread-bound book that appeared to be quite old; its cover seemed made of some kind of special leather or dense fabric, mostly soaked with dark red blood but seemingly not completely softening or deforming due to its distinctive material.
