Chapter 827: Chapter 694: Help Me Look After Someone (2)

The Governor still sat like a sculpture, behind the broad and heavy desk, his figure almost merging with the shadows of the high-backed chair.

There was no emotion on his face, as if wearing a smoothly polished mask, only the eyes occasionally flickering at the edge of the light proving he was a living being.

"Knock knock knock."

The knocking was light and restrained, breaking the deathly silence.

After receiving a barely audible assent, the Raven pushed the door open and walked in.

He still wore his signature jet-black attire, his face covered by the mask that absorbed light, and halted soundlessly a few steps from the desk.

Without pleasantries, he spoke directly, his voice coming through the mask with a metallic scrape:

"I’ve already placed Feng Yuhuai into the Night Watchers as you requested."

The Governor’s eyelids lifted slightly, his gaze falling on the Raven, awaiting more.

The Raven’s tone suddenly turned sharp:

"But, on her first mission, the experienced Night Watcher partnered with her... just disappeared. No sight of the living, no corpse of the dead."

He bit into the word "disappeared" with extra weight, his gaze through the mask’s eyeholes locked onto the Governor.

The Governor’s expression remained unchanged as he smiled and asked back:

"So, are you suspecting that Feng Yuhuai did some stealing?"

The Raven remained silent, naturally harboring such suspicions.

Although Feng Yuhuai, after her return, submitted a mission report full of picturesque descriptions — claiming to have encountered a sudden attack, with attackers of complex makeup.

Included were [Mask], "Old Huang," and "Zuo Bai" among other unknown figures, rendering the mission fraught with perils.

But a thousand times they doubted in the Raven’s heart!

His bottom line was to tolerate a monster donning the Night Watcher’s cloak, but never to allow that monster to bear its fangs at their own people.

The Governor seemed to see through the storm of doubt roiling within him, his face unchanged, still speaking softly:

"You’re overthinking it, this time, Feng Yuhuai really wasn’t lying."

He leaned slightly forward, the dim light illuminating half his face, a very faint curve at the corner of his mouth:

"She did ’snack’ a bit in Jade Garden, but... it’s not what you’re thinking."

The Raven, across the black mask, stared fixedly at the Governor.

Always feeling, when the latter mentioned Feng Yuhuai’s "snacking", there seemed to be a flicker of inexplicable... exhilaration in those unfathomable eyes?

The feeling was very strange, as if... as if it wasn’t Feng Yuhuai who completed that "snack", but the Governor himself, with a sense of secret satisfaction.

In short, very peculiar.

The Raven privately hadn’t avoided investigating the relationship between Feng Yuhuai and the Governor.

He had utilized the Night Watcher’s intelligence network to carefully screen all possible clues, the result showing — that these two were completely unrelated, whether in the open or hidden.

Like two parallel lines that would never intersect.

This only made him more mystified and wary of the Governor’s motivation for "cultivating" Feng Yuhuai so tirelessly.

He couldn’t understand or see through it.

The Governor, seeing the Raven silent for a long time, thought the other still disbelieved, thus added softly, his tone with a knowing clarity:

"The Jade Garden there should be in uproar by now. If you don’t believe me, you can verify it yourself.

However, as... a friend, I have to advise you, the Night Watchers in Zone 9 are already stretched thin, and can’t afford more loss.

You all should stay out of Jade Garden’s murky waters...."

The Raven believed halfway but did not show it, nor did he seem to heed the Governor’s "advice", suddenly asked back:

"How do you know so clearly about the onsite situation? You wouldn’t have... coincidentally been there that night, would you?"

Upon hearing this, the Governor chuckled:

"You’re thinking too wildly. How could I be there? It’s just that... I happened to ’glimpse’ some interesting scene, is all."

Not present, yet "saw".

The Raven’s heart leapt abruptly, as if he connected some dots, instantly elevating his wariness of the Governor by several notches.

The room lapsed into a prolonged silence, under dim light where dust floated slowly in rays, like fragments of time frozen.

After a long while, it was still the Raven who broke this suffocating silence.

He no longer dwelled on Feng Yuhuai’s issue, instead asked, voice deeper than before:

"What about the thing you promised me?"

The Chief Governor seemed already waiting for this, reaching to pull open a drawer of the desk.

Not much clutter inside, he reached for an item.

Dark red, smooth on the surface, offering a pearl-like gentle sheen, yet subtly emanating a herbal texture.

It exuded an extremely faint exotic aroma, peculiar in its initial imperceptibility, but upon deeper sniff, invigorating the spirit, while causing a subtle tremor.

It was a piece of "Red Wax".

The Chief Governor flicked it lightly with a finger, sending the Red Wax arcing through the air.

The Raven’s black robe swept aside, catching the Red Wax firmly in his palm.

He lowered his head, inspecting closely through the mask for a moment.

The dark red bead in contrast to his black glove, like a solidified drop of blood, seemed with minute energy flowing inside.

Without much hesitation, he quickly secured it into a specialized container inside his robe’s sleeve.

Item in hand, he turned to leave, seeming unwilling to linger even a moment longer.

"Wait."

The Raven’s footsteps paused, yet he didn’t immediately turn back.

The Chief Governor, observing his halted back, said calmly:

"That question of yours... one piece of ’Red Wax’ perhaps isn’t sufficient, huh?"

Buzz!

The Raven spun around abruptly, eyes beneath the mask suddenly shooting cold and piercing gleams.

A chilling coldness radiated from him, instantly lowering the room’s temperature, with even the floor tiles swiftly freezing into a thin layer of frost.

"You—you deceive—me?!"

The three words squeezed out through clenched teeth.

Facing this almost palpable murderous intent, the Governor let out a low chuckle:

"I didn’t deceive you, I promised before—if you helped me smoothly send Feng Yuhuai into the Night Watchers, I would give you a piece of ’Red Wax’.

Now, haven’t I given it to you?"

The Raven, extreme in anger, laughed instead, voice icy:

"But you yourself said before, this thing could solve my problem!"

The Governor’s smile remained unchanged, nodded:

"Yes, I did say ’Red Wax’ could solve your problem, that’s an undeniable truth."

He paused to add:

"However, I think I never mentioned that a single piece of ’Red Wax’ would be entirely adequate, right? Why don’t you review each word I said back then carefully?

Did I ever, from start to finish, say that a single piece would suffice to solve your problem?

I asked you to handle one thing, and I’d give you a piece. But I never explicitly stated that just one piece of ’Red Wax’ would completely solve it, indeed."

The Raven, as if drenched from head to toe with icy water, was momentarily stunned in place.

He realized he was deceived but not entirely deceived.

"You... a Chief Governor, yet playing such lowly word games?"

The Raven’s voice, quivering with extreme rage, intensified the surrounding chill, frost starting to appear on the walls.

The Governor, hearing this, instead revealed a hint of seriousness:

"Heh, seems you’ve misunderstood me somewhat.

Because I am the Chief Governor, I particularly emphasize the game of words. Because in the game of power, it often comes down to language and words, doesn’t it?"

The Raven was left speechless, armed with a blade, yet no match for a master of the pen.

To continue disputing in words was meaningless, only self-inflicting humiliation.

He took several deep breaths, with the ice underfoot gently melting as his emotions forcibly calmed.

He needed ’Red Wax’, especially after obtaining one, the desire within grew even stronger.

"What else... do you need me to do?"

These words upon asking, signified his renewed submission and acceptance of the other’s escalated conditions.

The Governor showed a satisfied smile:

"Speaking to someone who understands makes it easier, very simply, I need you to ’look after’ someone for me. Ensure he stays alive in the coming time, don’t let him die easily."
