Chapter 847: The Target Isn’t So Simple (Part 2)
Chapter 847 -704: The Target Isn’t So Simple (Part 2)
The color of blood vessels that should be visible beneath human skin was utterly nonexistent. It was eerie to the extreme.
Upon hearing his voice, Iron Claw and Shadow Scorpion, who moments before had been filled with murderous intent, ready to tear their opponent to shreds, immediately froze in place. Instinctively, they stopped with no hesitation.
Iron Claw swiftly retracted his menacing mechanical appendages, folding them meticulously back into his armor, landed lightly from the ceiling, stood up straight, faced the direction of the captain, and lowered his head in submission.
Shadow Scorpion made a gesture, and dozens of indistinguishable clones vanished instantly as if they’ve been deleted, reverting to particles that flew back into his body.
Even Fire Raven and Fortress, who had seemed indifferent, immediately changed their previously relaxed postures.
Fire Raven quickly slung the polished rifle onto his back, the buckle clicking into place with a snap, standing as straight as a javelin.
Fortress lowered his folded arms, his heavy metal palms hanging respectfully at his sides, with his fingers tightly together.
Though their expressions were entirely obscured by white masks, the genuine awe and compliance they felt could not be mistaken.
The four spoke in unison, like well-trained students, standing upright with voices that carried a slight, almost imperceptible tension:
“Captain.”
Fire Raven was the first to inquire:
“Captain, it’s just a prison guard… what’s the issue? The mission from the superior didn’t mention anything in particular to watch out for.”
Fire Raven’s voice was filled with confusion, echoing the questions in the minds of the others.
Mobilizing their special task force from the Hidden Sect to deal with an ordinary prison guard seemed like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
All four of their gazes focused on the captain, half-shrouded in shadow.
Only then did the captain reveal his full figure.
Compared to the other four, who averaged nearly 2 meters tall, their exoskeletal armors making them burly and robust, his physique appeared extremely… delicate.
Even with obviously custom-made exoskeletal armor, his height seemed no more than 1.4 meters at most.
This was his height with the armor on; one could hardly imagine what his height would be without this “shell.”
The contrast was reminiscent of a schoolchild.
Yet within this petite body was a majesty and strength completely disproportionate to his size.
He slowly stepped forward from the shadows, a thin smile on the exposed side of his lips, his voice incredibly raspy:
“A bunch of fools, use those rusty brains of yours. If the mission were really that simple, would we, the Hidden Sect, get such an easy assignment—something meant for relaxation?
Isn’t it always the fixed benefit for the Baby Face team?”
Before they could digest his words, the captain let out a cold chuckle:
“I used my authority to secretly check the Baby Face team’s recent entries and exits from the Hidden Sect.
Their current ‘relaxation trip’ is unusually long, far exceeding the typical recovery time.”
He paused, scanning the masks of his four subordinates, and spoke, emphasizing each word:
“If I’m not mistaken, the Baby Face team might already have met their end out there.”
“What?”
“That’s… impossible?”
Their astonishment was instant and collective at this revelation. Yet, their long training and absolute reverence for the captain stopped any of them from doubting its authenticity aloud.
“Captain, do you mean…”
Iron Claw’s voice had a faint tremor, his previous rage and arrogance entirely gone.
The captain nodded slowly, his tone grave:
“That’s exactly what I mean. Though the Baby Face team isn’t terribly weak, they’re no pushovers either.
If even they were taken down, do you still think this target is some pushover?”
In short, put yourselves on high alert, strictly follow the plan, and if anyone lets their guard down and gets caught off guard, dying out there…”
The captain’s gaze lingered momentarily on Iron Claw and Shadow Scorpion,
“Then all I can do is bring your bodies back.”
Iron Claw and Shadow Scorpion suddenly felt a chill run up their spines, reaching the back of their heads.
As White Masks, they’d seen death countless times and weren’t particularly afraid of dying.
But the thought of becoming part of the captain’s collection after death sent shivers of fear through them, making their skin tingle.
Seeing his team dismissing any casualness, the captain swept his gaze over them before coldly pronouncing:
“The boss’s explicit request is to capture the target alive. However, given the potential danger the target poses, I permit you, if met with resistance, to use full force without restraint.
Bringing back a corpse is also acceptable!”
Unilaterally altering the superior’s clear mission orders is a serious taboo for subordinates.
The Baby Face team would never have dared such a thing, but this “schoolchild” captain of the White Masks had no regard for such rules.
In his world, obedience was elective.
As his words concluded, the tension in the room seemed to ease slightly, and almost simultaneously, the White Masks burst into unrestrained laughter, filled with disregard for rules and anticipation for the impending bloodshed.
….
“What on earth is going on? Why hasn’t the door opened yet?!”
Zhao Lu looked up, his brow furrowed into a knot, waving vigorously at the dark surveillance camera above the gate.
The deep blue ID with the Executive Government emblem clutched in his hand was almost being crushed, as if wishing to shove the ID into the lens so the people inside could clearly see the emblem of authority.
Their IDs indicated affiliation with the “Mobility Department” of the Executive Government.
As for the IDs themselves, they were undeniably genuine and bore no falsifications.
With Du Changle’s connections within the government and his adept maneuvering capabilities, temporarily borrowing such IDs was a trivial task.
As for the so-called Mobility Department, as the name suggests, its functional domain bore quite a resemblance to the Mechanical Department.
It was another department with exceedingly vague jurisdictional boundaries and elastic reach, without fixed oversight areas, acting almost like invisible men with no specific charge.
But when any emergency or sensitive affair required handling, it turned into a jack of all trades, meddling anywhere and everywhere.
It’s like an agency that specialized in “cleaning up messes” and “putting out fires,” with authority that could be as expansive or constrained as needed.
Ultimately, whether the power held was vast or limited depended on situational analysis, with countless influencing factors in play.
But, regardless, the Mobility Department’s badge was generally more than sufficient to intimidate lower-level officials and local institutions, serving its purpose exceptionally well.
Especially when dealing with minor figures in lowly positions and limited exposure, it often worked wonders.
Strictly speaking, Feng Mu was not even a proper officer within the official roster of the Executive Government; therefore, Zhao Lu assumed the Mobility Department’s name would ensure cooperation from this minor prison guard… right?
Then!!!
A minute passed, and the iron door remained unresponsive.
Two minutes passed, and Zhao Lu’s brow was tightly knitted.
After five minutes, the prison’s gate stayed firmly shut, as if welded closed.
Zhao Lu’s inner fury rose rapidly, his face shifting from initial arrogance to a sullen reminder of his anger.
Just as he was about to lose patience, the heavy, gradual creak of mechanisms echoed from within the iron door, which slowly opened inward to a gap just wide enough for one person.
Zhao Lu, with fury in his eyes, was about to charge in when a colleague lightly tugged his sleeve, whispering:
“Stay calm, remember what the boss said before stepping out.
Attitude, keep a friendlier attitude at first. As long as we can bring the person back smoothly and complete the task, then you can settle your grievances however you wish.”
