Eternal Life as False Emperor
Chapter 659 - 471: Strange Army
This encounter made General Chang truly realize that these rebels were completely different from those before.
With him in the fray, the battle seemed a one-sided crushing defeat.
However, the time taken to end this battle was much longer than he imagined.
Even though elite rebels were sent to attack the gate, their performance was still unexpected.
General Chang was very worried about how many such people might be in the rebel army of tens of thousands.
"Absolutely impossible." General Chang forcefully shook his head, trying to dismiss this terrifying thought from his mind.
But just how much of the shadow in his heart was dispelled, perhaps even he did not know.
Just as he was thinking of quickly reaching the city wall to observe the rebels’ situation, smoke signaling trouble suddenly rose from several other city gates simultaneously.
"These damn scoundrels!"
Attacking gates like this isn’t uncommon, but General Chang never expected that these guys would assault all three gates at the same time.
This left him with no time to make any other response.
"Take some people and rush to the South City gate as quickly as possible to provide support. If you find the gate has been breached, inform me immediately."
General Chang assigned a few of his personal guards to rush over as quickly as possible to provide support.
He himself led the remaining people to support the other gate.
Whether they’d make it in time, General Chang didn’t know, but under the current circumstances, this was the only solution he could think of.
He could only hope that those at the gate could hold on until reinforcements arrived.
General Chang didn’t have high hopes, as the troops on the city wall were much closer than they were.
If they couldn’t stop them under such circumstances, his troops would definitely not make it in time.
They were all powerful cultivators; when unleashing their full capability, they were faster than galloping horses.
Seeing the gate from afar, General Chang couldn’t help but gasp.
Over a dozen rebels guarded the gateway, blocking the densely packed defenders outside. Below the city gate, four rebels had already opened a small gap in the gate.
The rebel army outside, shouting battle cries loud enough to shake the heavens, began to attack in force towards the gate.
Because of the failure at the gate, the defenders on the wall also became restless, almost unable to mount any decent resistance.
"Stop, you thieves!" General Chang’s angry roar echoed from top to bottom of the walls.
Stepping on top of the defending troops, he charged into the gate passage, scattering the resisting Qingshan Army soldiers.
Despite the soldiers’ valiant resistance, against the overwhelming strength, their efforts seemed in vain.
The four Qingshan Army soldiers struggling to open the gate tried their hardest to open it a bit more before General Chang arrived.
But they only managed to open a narrow gap of less than an inch before General Chang arrived with thunderous momentum, killing them on the spot.
Now, the nearest Qingshan Army troops outside were still several yards away from the gate.
After dealing with the gate-crashing enemies, General Chang commanded the troops to shut the gate, with seven or eight men securing massive gate bars.
"Although the enemy is numerous, we are sheltered by the city walls. We need not fear!"
"Everyone hold your ground on the walls. Without orders, you’re not to retreat on your own; those who disobey military orders will face military consequences!"
Without hesitating, the anxious General Chang rushed to the gate where he had sent his subordinates for support.
Just halfway there, he heard deafening cheers ahead.
"It’s over!" General Chang’s heart sank.
He didn’t even need to go over; he already knew the rebels had successfully breached the gate.
If the gate could be defended, with the city walls, even if the rebels outnumbered them greatly, General Chang was confident in holding Linjiang City.
But without the protection of the city walls, there was no way his men could defend it.
General Chang decisively abandoned providing gate reinforcements and rushed back to the City Lord’s side.
"City Lord, Linjiang City can no longer be defended. I will now immediately escort you out."
"What’s going on?" the City Lord asked incredulously.
Just a short while ago, the other party had confidently assured him that Linjiang City could be defended.
How long has it been?
During the inquiry for details, the City Lord wasn’t idle either, hastening to the north gate alongside General Chang.
Given the current situation, preserving life was most crucial, everything else could be revisited later.
"Those rebels had already infiltrated Linjiang City, attacking all three gates simultaneously."
"Despite my desperate defense, I managed to secure two gates. Unfortunately, we were still outmaneuvered by those despicable enemies in the end."
"Without the walls’ protection, we are definitely no match for the bandits. To ensure your safety and not give the bandits any opportunity, I must regretfully escort you to leave first."
General Chang provided an excuse for the City Lord. Though internally, the City Lord cursed him a fool, he outwardly maintained a righteous demeanor and said, "General Chang is right. We shouldn’t compete over who wins at this moment."
"The rebels dispatched spies to infiltrate the defending troops, inciting them to cooperate, something we hadn’t anticipated."
"The strategy now is naturally to preserve strength and prepare for counterattack."
General Chang also felt a chill in his heart; these civil servants were really cunning, instantly coming up with so many reasons.
Who would be scapegoated for this treacherous scheme?
But under the present circumstances, he was already counting his blessings for keeping himself safe, with no time to worry about anyone else.
