Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking
Chapter 225: How Wonderful
Mama Knight said a few more words, her tone remaining calm the entire time.
Jane Lancaster hung up the phone, her brow furrowed slightly.
’Mama Knight wouldn’t just abandon me for no reason, especially when my hand is still injured.’
She glanced at the few people in the dining room, her gaze falling on a bank card left on the table.
The Lancaster family’s employees all used gold cards from the same bank as their salary cards. They all looked identical, so at a glance, it was impossible to tell whose it was.
Jane Lancaster walked over and looked down at the salary card, seeing the name on it was Melody Knight.
Melody Knight—Mama Knight’s full name.
’This is Mama Knight’s salary card. Why is it here?’
In the silence, Julian Lancaster was the first to speak. "Mama Knight just quit."
Jane Lancaster wasn’t too surprised. She’d suspected as much; otherwise, Mama Knight wouldn’t have left so suddenly without a word.
She looked at Julian Lancaster and, to seem more imposing, slammed her elbow down hard on the table.
"Why? I’d like an explanation. Did you force Mama Knight out just because I fired the cook? On what grounds?"
The housekeeper hadn’t expected the siblings to clash like this and was too scared to even breathe.
"This has nothing to do with our older brother," Adrian Lancaster snapped, displeased that she would slam the table in front of Julian.
"Are you really going to disrespect our older brother over some insolent maid?"
Jane Lancaster had been furious, but as if she’d suddenly figured something out, her expression became one of forbearance.
"No. I’m used to Mama Knight taking care of me. We have to ask her to come back!"
Adrian Lancaster looked up, his sharp, almond-shaped eyes flashing. "No. I refuse!"
’Mama Knight openly challenged me. Asking her back would be a slap in my face, wouldn’t it?’
"If we’re bringing Mama Knight back, we might as well bring the cook back, and Mrs. Everett too!"
Jane Lancaster shot back, "Third Brother, you’re just being unreasonable!"
"I think *you’re* the one being unreasonable!" Adrian Lancaster couldn’t stop himself from slamming the table as well.
Jane Lancaster suddenly looked at him, her eyes welling with tears, her face a mask of restrained sorrow.
"Third Brother, how could you treat me like this? I’m your own sister, and I’m still injured..."
A flash of disgust crossed Adrian Lancaster’s eyes. "Jane Lancaster, stop pretending..."
SOB SOB SOB... Jane Lancaster clumsily covered her face with her bandaged hand, then turned and ran off.
As she ran, she was laughing hysterically inside.
’This is perfect! I never thought this idiot would be so useful. If I’d known, I would have asked for your help sooner.’
’I’ve been trying to convince Mama Knight to leave the Lancaster family for days, but she wouldn’t listen. I was worried she’d get caught up in the family’s bankruptcy and come to a bad end.’
’Now it’s all worked out. Mama Knight left on her own, perfectly dodging the plot.’
’In that case, I should add some fuel to the fire. It’s time to guide public opinion and strike first.’
Adrian Lancaster, who had taken a few steps to chase after her: "..."
’So she really was faking it!’
He was speechless with anger, feeling inexplicably that he had been outmaneuvered at every turn tonight.
’But what did Jane’s last thought mean? Is she planning to harm the Lancaster family?’
"Big Brother, did you hear that? She..." Seeing the housekeeper standing nearby, he abruptly cut himself off.
Julian Lancaster’s expression was calm. "I heard."
His gaze fell on the bank card Mama Knight had left on the table, his eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions.
At first, he had suspected that Mama Knight had been instigated by Jane Lancaster to say what she did.
Recently, the three brothers had been close with Luna Morgan. When Luna was injured and hospitalized, the three of them even took turns caring for her.
It would be perfectly normal for Jane Lancaster to resent Luna Morgan because of this.
But now he was certain: Jane Lancaster knew nothing about it.
’She doesn’t even know there’s six hundred thousand in this salary card, or she wouldn’t let it just sit here.’
So, the question was, why would Mama Knight go to such lengths for Jane Lancaster?
She was just a maid. The Lancaster family hadn’t treated her with any special favor; her salary was the same as any other ordinary maid’s, unlike Mrs. Everett, whose pay was much higher because she had been a housekeeper.
She wasn’t in charge of purchasing or management, so she had no access to money and no opportunities for kickbacks.
Six hundred thousand was likely all the money she had painstakingly saved.
Julian Lancaster’s feelings were complicated. He couldn’t help but voice his confusion softly, "Why is she so despicable, yet so many people treat her with genuine kindness?"
That Miss Jacobs had silently and persistently sent local delicacies for three years. Even knowing Jane Lancaster was in a coma and couldn’t eat them, she still wanted to express her gratitude to Jane’s family.
She never even tried to flag down his car.
Since she was often around that high school, she must have been familiar with his license plate. After all, he used to pick up and drop off his sister frequently back then, and he was very high-profile about it.
If she’d had the intention, it would have been easy to find out more and lie in wait to intercept his car.
After all, even Luna Morgan, the person who had indirectly harmed Jane Lancaster, was now living in the Lancaster home and enjoying some of its benefits.
For instance, Adrian Lancaster took her on a TV show. For another, Luna Morgan was the star of her university; all the awards, competitions, and resources in her department went to her first, all because he had put in a word with the dean.
He had also recommended a very good internship for Luna Morgan.
If Nina Jacobs had approached him, he would have definitely helped her out, if only to save face.
But she never did. She just silently dropped off the gifts and left, truly expecting nothing in return.
Adrian Lancaster couldn’t answer this question either.
He sneered silently to himself. ’I’m emotionally distant, and even my "brotherly affection" toward my two older brothers is just an act. What do I know about what’s genuine and what isn’t?’
Lately, he’d been acting as if he cared about his two older brothers, but in truth, when he found out Alvin Lancaster had gone mad... he felt a complete calm inside.
He used to think he felt differently about his two brothers, but now it seemed there was no difference.
The only people in this world who could truly stir strong emotions in him, besides his father, were Luna Morgan.
"Who knows? Maybe she’s good at brainwashing people," Adrian Lancaster said with a shrug.
’We’re brother and sister. Both cunning and good at pretending, aren’t we?’
"Big Brother, hurry and eat your steak. It won’t taste good if it gets cold," Adrian Lancaster said with a smile.
It was rare for him to cook for his older brother, and he wanted to put on a show of concern to score some points.
Julian Lancaster picked up the bank card, his gaze lowered for a moment. Then he said, "I’m not eating. Take it away."
Adrian Lancaster was stunned. "Big Brother?"
Julian Lancaster ignored him and walked straight out.
Adrian Lancaster stood frozen in place, his expression slowly returning to a blank mask.
He picked up the plate with the now-cold steak and dumped it directly into the trash can.
Jane Lancaster had no idea that Mama Knight had left a card behind.
No matter how turbulent things were outside, she continued to attend her classes with peace of mind.
However, because of her injured hand, she could only sit in class and listen passively.
That day’s class was a general elective, and she had only been sitting for a short while before attracting several stares.
One of those gazes continued to follow her even after class ended.
She was no stranger to this kind of attention. After all, she had endured this sort of harassment ever since she was a child.
