Evolution by Adding Points
Chapter 150 - 108: Dynamic Visual Capture Ability
As the saying goes, a few days’ absence feels like three years. Chen Jue found that he was growing more and more fond of Teacher Wu’s style and beauty.
As for Wu Fang, her eyes lit up when she saw Chen Jue appear.
"Haven’t seen you in a few days. Did you get hair transplants?" Wu Fang leaned in, greeting him with a curious question.
She’d noticed that this Brother of Special Skills, whom she hadn’t seen in a few days, had somehow become even more radiant than before.
Not only had he cut his hair short, boldly revealing his forehead, but even his previously faintly visible scalp was gone.
His entire posture seemed straighter and more upright. His gradually broadening shoulders and strong upper body filled out his black-and-white tracksuit. His steps were steady and powerful, and even his casual stroll had the air of a runway model.
Clean, fresh, sunny, and healthy. Although his features were ordinary, when paired with the confidence and composure on his face, he was a solid 7-out-of-10 stud!
He might not be as handsome as a movie star, but on the street, he’d at least turn a few girls’ heads.
"Hair transplants? Of course not! Transplants are risky and have side effects like rejection. I’ve just been sleeping and waking early recently, and I got some traditional Chinese medicine from the hospital. I’ve been taking it slowly, and my hair grew back." Chen Jue told Teacher Wu a small lie, running a hand through his thick, bristly, close-cropped hair.
For a man, having hair or not makes a huge difference.
"Is Chinese medicine that effective?"
"COUGH, COUGH... I guess I’ll go get some prescribed for myself to try." Wu Fang coughed lightly, clearly not yet fully recovered from the flu.
Chen Jue had seen the news online these past few days. It said that the flu virus and mycoplasma pneumonia were spreading like crazy lately. They were stubborn viruses with no particularly effective specific cure, and it wasn’t uncommon for ordinary people to be stuck with a cough for over a month after getting sick.
For Wu Fang to get better within a week, she clearly had a strong immune system.
Sleeping and waking early every day, plus frequent morning workouts—her physical constitution was clearly a cut above the average person’s.
Just then, Zheng Yuan, who was setting up testing equipment in the classroom, trotted over excitedly. "Brother Jue, for this project of mine, I’ve also specially invited a very capable senior to help me supervise."
"I’ll be counting on you and Wu Fang for the test! After we’re done, lunch is on me—a big feast!"
"Alright. Just tell me what you need me to do," Chen Jue said, nodding. He then took out the various Darts he had prepared.
Wu Fang had also brought a Red Tassel Spear and a Rope Dart. Although she was still sick, it didn’t seem to affect her much.
He just didn’t expect that while he was chatting with Wu Fang about the excitement of the last livestream, an unexpected person would show up.
Zhou Chuan walked into the training facility from outside, carrying textbooks and a laptop.
"Huh?"
"Senior Chen, what are you doing here?" Zhou Chuan asked, a bit suspicious.
Because Chen Jue was on his list of medical cases to follow up on, Zhou Chuan had a very deep impression of him.
"I’m here to help Zheng Yuan with a test," Chen Jue greeted him, thinking to himself, ’This Jiang University campus is really small.’
’I can’t believe the second-year grad student Zheng Yuan invited was Zhou Chuan, Jiang University’s famous super-nerd!’
’But thinking about Zheng Yuan’s bizarre research topic, it actually made sense that he would invite Zhou Chuan, whose thinking was just as unconventional.’
"You? Helping Little Yuan with a test?"
"You’re the Darts master he was talking about!" Zhou Chuan was also a bit stunned. He re-examined Chen Jue with a curious expression.
’He’d really misjudged him at that meal before. He never thought that Chen Jue, an auditing student with gallstones, would have such a deeply hidden skill.’
"Senior Zhou, I’ll have to trouble you with overseeing the physical test data this time!" Seeing that everyone had arrived, Zheng Yuan enthusiastically made some introductions.
There were a total of eight people present to assist with the test. Besides Zheng Yuan and his girlfriend, his three roommates were assigned to the ordinary person control group.
Chen Jue and Wu Fang, the two invited guests from outside the university, were assigned to the Martial Artist experimental group.
"Martial Artist?"
"I haven’t even taken a certification test. Can I really bear that title?" Chen Jue found it amusing as he watched his name being entered into the testing system.
As for Wu Fang, she cooperatively took out a First-Level Athlete qualification certificate and a Martial Hero Level Martial Arts rank certificate.
The ranking standards for Martial Arts athletes are slightly different from those of regular athletes. From lowest to highest, they are: Martial Child, Third-level Warrior, Second-level Warrior, First-level Warrior, Martial Hero Level, and International Martial Hero Level.
To obtain the Martial Hero Level certification, one must, at the very least, place in the top three in a national-level Martial Arts championship.
’I had no idea Teacher Wu was so skilled!’
"The recordings of past Martial Arts championships should be available online, right?" Chen Jue’s gaze lingered on the Martial Hero Level certificate for a few extra moments.
Wu Fang obviously noticed Chen Jue’s curious gaze. Her cheeks flushed slightly, and after letting Zheng Yuan take a photo, she quickly put the two certificates back into her small bag.
...
After meeting and getting to know each other, they got down to business.
According to Zheng Yuan, the test consisted of several items, involving the human body’s dynamic visual tracking ability, limb reaction speed, individual wrist strength, and the destructive power of the thrown Darts, among other things.
The ordinary person control group went first. Zheng Yuan and his roommates clamorously put on VR goggle-like devices and began the test.
Meanwhile, Chen Jue, Wu Fang, and Zhou Chuan stood to the side, staring at the real-time feedback data projected onto a screen.
"Zheng Yuan: 15 frames, unaided eye"
"Lin Xiaoyue: 17 frames, unaided eye"
"..."
"Junior Brother Zhou, this frame count—is it the same unit as a computer monitor’s refresh rate?" Chen Jue asked curiously, looking at the feedback on the screen.
Zhou Chuan nodded and began to explain, "It’s a similar concept, but with some differences. The average reaction speed of the human eye is about one-tenth of a second, or around 100 milliseconds."
"To test an individual’s dynamic visual tracking ability, the best method is to use the unaided eye to distinguish between frame rates and determine the upper limit of the eye’s tracking capability."
"For example, the film industry used to shoot movies at a standard of 24 frames per second. That means 24 images are displayed in one second, with each image lasting 41.6 milliseconds. Above 24 frames, it’s difficult for the average person to notice the breaks between frames. Now, digital cinema technology using 60 frames or more is becoming common, resulting in a clearer picture."
"The computer monitors we use daily generally have a refresh rate of around 60 frames. However, computer imaging is different from a movie picture; this involves the concepts of motion blur and persistence of vision. A computer displays a series of still images, whereas movie filming incorporates motion blur to make the picture seem smoother."
As he spoke, Zhou Chuan pointed to the laptop he’d brought, which was displaying the test footage being played inside the VR goggles.
It was a clip of a black sphere flying horizontally across a white background. As the frame rate increased, the black sphere would show noticeable gaps in its flight path, until those gaps nearly disappeared.
The test Zheng Yuan and the others were doing was to visually track the gaps that appeared between each frame.
Once they reached a frame rate where the gaps disappeared and the black sphere appeared to fly across the screen in a completely smooth motion, it meant that frame rate was the limit of their eye’s visual tracking.
’So that’s the principle behind it!’
Chen Jue’s face showed sudden understanding after hearing Zhou Chuan’s analysis. ’These brainiacs from top universities really have a way of thinking,’ he mused. ’To come up with such a straightforward way to test vision.’
After Zheng Yuan and his friends finished, Wu Fang went up, put on the VR goggles, and did the test. Her result was 26 frames, meaning she could perceive a dynamic image that appeared for just 38 milliseconds.
Compared to the test data from the ordinary person control group, which were all in the teens, Wu Fang’s visual tracking ability was particularly outstanding.
"My turn!"
Chen Jue was eager to try. After doing the Eye Health Exercises for over a month, he had no idea how much his visual abilities had actually improved.
This was the perfect opportunity to test his own visual limits while providing data for Zheng Yuan’s project.
"Go for it, Master Chen!" Wu Fang cheered, taking off the VR goggles for Chen Jue.
Chen Jue smiled, nodded, and took the goggles. After putting them on, he began the test.
Meanwhile, Zheng Yuan and his friends gathered around Zhou Chuan, watching the test on his laptop screen.
On the screen, the horizontally flying black sphere sped up as the frame rate increased, and the frequency of the gaps in its movement decreased frame by frame.
First 10 frames, then 20... the gaps became fewer and fewer. By the time it passed 24 frames, the limit for an average person, Zheng Yuan and the others staring at the screen could no longer see any gaps at all.
But Chen Jue showed no signs of stopping!
frames, 28 frames, 30 frames... The black sphere moved more and more smoothly across the screen. It wasn’t until 40 frames that Chen Jue finally pressed the pause button and took off the VR goggles.
"That’s it for me. I can’t see the gaps after 40 frames," Chen Jue said, turning to Zhou Chuan.
He didn’t expect everyone, including Wu Fang, to be gawking at him as if he were a deity.
"40 frames with the naked eye?"
"Brother Jue, your eyesight is that good?"
"That’s insane! Does practicing Martial Arts Darts improve your vision that much?"
"With eyesight like that, you could probably see the trajectory of a bullet, right?" Zheng Yuan and his roommates exclaimed.
Zhou Chuan, however, upon seeing Chen Jue’s ridiculously high test result, had an extremely curious reaction. His eyes lit up as if he had discovered a treasure. "40 frames. A visual capture ability of 25 milliseconds. That’s pretty amazing!"
"But trying to see a bullet with the naked eye is still nearly impossible."
Zheng Yuan and the others were taken aback. "Senior Zhou, what frame rate would you need to see a bullet?"
Zhou Chuan smiled, picked up a pen and paper, and began calculating as if no one else was there. "The width of the VR goggle screen with the moving black sphere is 140mm. Let’s assume a bullet is fired from the weakest handgun, with a muzzle velocity of 300 meters per second. Calculating... it would take the bullet only 4.6 milliseconds to cross the screen."
"In other words, you’d need a visual capture ability of nearly 217 frames per second to even see the bullet cross the screen."
"However, the human eye has its limits. For an ordinary person, there’s a processing time between seeing an object and the brain forming an image. It’s like taking a picture with your phone; there’s a delay after you press the shutter button before the photo is taken. This visual processing time is related to the individual’s optic nerve transmission speed. Research from abroad shows it fluctuates around 20 milliseconds, and not even the Maasai people, who have some of the best eyesight in the world, can break this 20-millisecond limit."
"Therefore, it’s impossible for a normal human to ever see the flight path of a bullet in their lifetime."
"If you could see a bullet coming at you, you wouldn’t be a normal human; you’d be in a Bullet Time scene from *The Matrix*."
Everyone present was completely won over by Zhou Chuan’s data-driven analysis.
’He really is a study fiend!’
He could pull all sorts of weird and wonderful data about the human body out of thin air and could analyze and calculate on the spot. It was truly an eye-opening experience for undergraduates like Zheng Yuan.
Even Chen Jue and Wu芳 were listening in a slight daze. They glanced at each other, exchanging looks of shock.
’A 20-millisecond visual processing limit?’
’If I spend free attribute points using Pointing and Adding Points on my eyeballs and optic nerves, could I break that limit?’ Chen Jue wondered, as the next phase of testing began.
