Chapter 169 Climbing Beyond the Limit

  • Next Chapter

Chen Jue could tell with just a glance that the child was standing at a height of over twelve stories. Shocked, he immediately dashed toward a convenience store by the roadside, cursing under his breath, "Damn it! Whose unruly kid is this?"

The crowd of onlookers had already erupted into chaos. Some were calling the police, others were contacting the fire department, and still others were telling the building management to quickly get in touch with the child’s parents.

"This is just awful!"

"How could they leave such a young child home alone?"

"Someone call the police! She’s climbed so high. If the wind picks up, she could easily fall!"

"Where are the parents? Where the hell did the parents go?!"

Some people were discussing, some were complaining, and some kind-hearted souls were making calls.

Even Wu Fang was in the crowd, her face fraught with anxiety. The height was far beyond what any normal person could reach. No matter how kind-hearted Teacher Wu was, she felt completely helpless in this situation.

"Grandpa, can you cross over to that spot from the next-door balcony?" Wu Fang asked with a frown.

Elder Wu shook his head. "No! It’s too high! The spot where the child is standing is too tricky; she’s right on the ledge outside the window. The only way to get to her is to rappel someone down from above or use a fire truck’s ladder."

"Then what do we do?"

"It’ll take the fire truck at least ten minutes to get here. What if the wind picks up..." Wu Fang’s face was full of worry.

They lived in this very residential complex, and most of the children were from families of old neighbors they knew. If an accident happened to someone so familiar, any decent person would feel terrible.

But just as the crowd of onlookers below was growing larger, an agile figure suddenly appeared. Starting from a ground-floor storefront outside the complex, he hooked onto the protruding edge of a window frame and climbed directly onto the third-floor rooftop terrace.

This sudden scene immediately caught everyone’s attention. Even the few complex security guards on site shouted, "Hey! Buddy! What are you doing?"

"Get down from there! It’s dangerous!"

Wu Fang also saw the young man’s profile, and a glimmer of hope instantly lit up her anxious eyes. As if seeing a savior, she excitedly grabbed Elder Wu’s arm and shook it. "Grandpa! It’s Chen Jue! Chen Jue can climb really high trees. He’ll definitely have a way!"

Seeing this, Elder Wu clicked his tongue in amazement. As a loyal fan of the Brother of Special Skills, he had seen the video of Chen Jue’s incredible ginkgo tree climb.

However, climbing the outer wall of a high-rise was obviously not comparable to climbing a tree. The dangers involved were beyond what an ordinary person could imagine.

Chen Jue, however, paid no mind to the shouts from below. He grabbed a can of Red Bull and began chugging it down.

He hadn’t had time for breakfast this morning, so his stamina was limited. He could only rely on this energy drink to temporarily replenish his strength and avoid collapsing from exhaustion once he got higher up.

CLANG! After finishing the can, he aimed for an open trash can below and tossed it. Then, Chen Jue pulled his phone and car keys from his pocket and threw them through the air to Wu Fang in the crowd. "Teacher Wu, hold on to these for me!"

With that, Chen Jue pushed off with his legs, stepping on the rough surface of the third-floor wall. In one leap, he reached up and grabbed onto a protruding bay window on the fourth floor.

The complex was in a prime location, but it had been built some years ago. The building’s design was somewhat retro, with many externally mounted air conditioning units and side windows visible.

Chen Jue used the ledges of these side windows and the AC units to maneuver his way up the wall, ascending with incredible speed.

His [Climbing] Skill was already at Lv. 5, so conquering a building like this, with its large handholds, wasn’t too difficult.

The difficult part was that the higher he climbed, the stronger the crosswinds blew against the building.

Standing in the crowd, having just caught the phone and keys Chen Jue had tossed down, Wu Fang was sweating with anxiety for him.

Her feelings at this moment were incredibly complex. On one hand, she hoped Chen Jue could display his incredible abilities, to transform into the omnipotent "Brother of Special Skills" and save the little girl. On the other hand, she didn’t want him to take such a risk.

It was a mix of concern for the little girl’s life and worry for the man she cared about.

However, Chen Jue’s skill and movements clearly exceeded the imagination of Wu Fang and everyone else in the crowd below!

In just half a minute, Chen Jue had already climbed from the third-floor terrace of the commercial building to the 8th floor.

He was scaling a new floor almost every four or five seconds!

A normal person couldn’t even climb a flight of stairs that fast. It truly got everyone’s hearts pounding.

"Holy shit! This guy’s amazing!"

"He must have trained in Rock Climbing, right?"

"I bet he’s from the fire department. He’s climbing so fast!"

"Mommy! Mommy! That uncle is as amazing as Spider-Man from the movies!"

The crowd below buzzed with discussion. Some were taking photos and videos with their phones, while others were calling to urge the fire department to hurry.

In short, with a life hanging in the balance on the side of that wall, no one could remain calm.

It was also the time of day when people were heading to work and school, so the crowd outside the complex grew larger and larger.

After climbing to the 10th floor, Chen Jue stopped on top of an air conditioning unit to catch his breath.

The high-speed climb had consumed a great deal of his stamina. Coupled with the increasingly strong, chilly wind he faced after reaching the 10th floor, a proper rest was necessary to maintain his condition for the rest of the climb.

But the moment he stopped, the commotion from the crowd below grew louder.

"Why’d he stop?"

"Did he run out of steam?"

"I knew it. Young people are unreliable, always trying to be a hero!"

"Great. Now the fire department will have to rescue one more person..." A few doubtful voices piped up from the crowd.
