Evolutionary Superstar

Chapter 89: Illegal Experiments?

  • Next Chapter

Director Chen really was interested in seeing how a single tuxedo cat could fend off dozens of angry cats and kittens and still come out on top.

The moment the livestream footage replayed, Director Chen and the others were mind-blown.

"Kung-fu cat... Oreo really is a kung-fu cat... Hahaha..." Director Chen laughed loudly.

Suddenly, he realized this cat-astrophe was actually a big blessing in disguise.

Of course, the compensation for every injured party involved wouldn’t be small. The fan backlash wouldn’t be light either.

However, Director Chen could see Oreo’s potential as a superstar cat.

With such rare, unprecedented footage, the show’s popularity would definitely explode. All losses could easily be recouped once the show took off.

The gears in Director Chen’s brain began to turn quickly.

Obviously, today’s filming could no longer follow the original plan. A new script and scenario were needed.

...

Lin Haoren circled around the battered and exhausted stray cats and kittens, observing how, despite their helpless states, they still glared at him with great hatred.

This surprised him.

After all, there was rationality behind this hatred; it wasn’t mindless hatred born from nothing but primal instincts.

As such, Lin Haoren was even more certain that these poor strays weren’t infected with rabies.

However, he wondered why they would look at humans with such hatred.

What have they been through? What did humans do to them to incur such hatred?

These questions were worth investigating.

Moreover, there was also doubt behind their unexpected gathering.

After all, if the Field Producer didn’t slack on his job, then the stray cats must have taken over the abandoned warehouse very recently.

"Director Chen, I think we are about 30 rescue boxes short," Lin Haoren chuckled as he picked up an exhausted black kitten by the back of the neck.

Even though the black kitten wanted to resist physically and mentally, it couldn’t.

Once the back of its neck was pinched, it became helpless and docile; it could only be held by Lin Haoren obediently.

However, it wasn’t really obedience, just a natural scruffing response inherited from when their mothers carried them.

"30 rescue boxes short?"

Director Chen frowned as he recalled how aggressive and violent the feral cats and kittens were.

It seemed like it wouldn’t be easy to tame their wild nature. If they could not rehabilitate them, euthanasia was likely the only option.

"I’ll have someone fetch us additional rescue boxes," Director Chen said.

However, Lin Haoren noticed Director Chen’s look and saw through his thoughts. He didn’t want these feral felines to be euthanized just because they were violent towards humans.

It seemed too inhumane. Maybe they just lacked human love.

Anyway, with his Animal Taming Skill, he could surely quell their violent tendencies.

"Why did you attack us?" Lin Haoren asked.

The black kitten blinked with surprise, seemingly understanding Lin Haoren’s question.

"Hoo-mans, bad! No injections! No violence!" the black kitten meowed.

Although the black kitten responded in broken language, it was simple enough for Lin Haoren to interpret the true message.

He quickly understood why the cats and kittens hidden in Qingshan Warehouse No.13 had developed such hatred for humans.

They were likely used by humans in illegal experiments and were subjected to all kinds of injections and abuse.

However, how did these felines end up in Qingshan Warehouse No.13? Could the illegal experiment laboratory be nearby?

Did the unfortunate felines escape from it? Or was it abandoned like the warehouse?

"Don’t worry, I’m not a bad human," Lin Haoren assured the black kitten.

However, the black kitten was strongly distrustful of humans. Words alone could not gain its trust, even though communication wasn’t an issue.

Fortunately, Lin Haoren was carrying some treats.

Although the premium treats were prepared for luring out the Ironpaw Duchess, he treated all cats fairly; he wouldn’t discriminate, though he might give extra special attention to the unfortunate ones.

"Eat. This is good stuff." Lin Haoren offered, squeezing a bit of the premium treat out of the packet.

The black kitten resisted. He didn’t trust anything given by hoo-mans. They were all bad people. The treat must be something awful again.

The resistance only lasted a few seconds before the black kitten was lured by the yummy smell.

No! It must not eat random things given by hoo-mans! But it smells so good! Can’t eat! Definitely can’t eat! But it must be delicious...

The black kitten was conflicted, but it ultimately bit the bait. It licked the premium treat carefully before its eyes lit up.

So yummy!

[Animal Taming Skill Proficiency +21]

Lin Haoren wore a look of wonder.

Beating cats gives proficiency points for Animal Taming. Feeding them also gives proficiency points for Animal Taming.

However, he fed Oreo on time every day. Why didn’t he gain any proficiency points for Animal Taming then?

The effects differ for domesticated, feral, and strays?

After the black kitten finished the premium treat Lin Haoren offered, it seemed to have snapped out of a spell and realized what it had done.

Oh, no!

It had been tricked into eating hoo-man food!

Eh? But the taste was indeed not bad. It was the best thing it had ever eaten. It even wanted more.

However, the black kitten would never beg the stinky hoo-man for more treats.

Absolutely not.

Meanwhile, Lin Haoren took in the information he had learned from the black kitten and began to inspect the older cats one by one.

Under his scrutiny, Lin Haoren found many small patches of bald spots, irritated skin, bruising, shaved areas, surgical lines, scabs, and thickened skin on their bodies.

They seemed to be signs of repeated injections, surgical experiments, and repeated blood draws.

These poor felines had been terribly mistreated and were malnourished and very sick.

The kittens’ cases were as severe, but the older cats were basically terminally ill with no hope of recovery with modern medicine.

They would not live long, and they would suffer agonizing pain at every waking moment.

Lin Haoren couldn’t help but feel pained and furious on their behalf.

Humans could be so cruel to small animals.
