Faking It With The Hockey Star
Chapter 184: The Intruder
Justin’s POV
A look of complete, jarring confusion washed over his face. He stared at the empty chairs. He stared at the quiet garden.
My brain suddenly put the terrifying pieces together. The realization hit me so hard it felt like a physical blow to my sternum. I sat up straight, blood rushing to my ears.
"Wait."
My lawyer turned his head sharply. "What?"
"Diane," I whispered, the name tasting like ash on my tongue.
"What about her?"
"She gave him the entire blueprint," I said, pointing a trembling finger at the wall screen. "Look at him! He isn’t searching the house for money or silver! He knows where my grandparents spend their afternoons! He knew the exact layout of the property before he even stepped foot in the driveway!"
My voice dropped into a dark, hollow whisper. "He isn’t guessing. He came here with a hit list."
My lawyer’s face drained of color as he rewatched the man’s movements. "You’re right."
"That’s why he didn’t care about smashing the front door," I said, raw fury and terror warring in my chest. "He knew the floor plan. He knew the rear exit. He knew how the backyard connected to the old access road behind the estate. He came to kill them where they sit every day."
The man turned around on the grass, realizing the yard was entirely deserted, and began marching back toward the house in a frantic hurry.
I slammed my finger onto the trackpad, switching back to the living room feed.
He burst back inside, crossing the dining area toward the front foyer.
And that was the exact moment the trap snapped shut.
Shadows exploded from the front hallway.
"Wait!" my lawyer shouted, leaning forward. "Is that "
"Law enforcement!" I yelled.
Fully armed tactical officers flooded into the living room from both side corridors, weapons raised, completely cutting off his escape route. They had been waiting in the dark the entire time.
The man froze in the center of the room, his eyes wide with animal shock. For one horrific, suspended second, time stopped completely.
Then, he turned on his heel and sprinted like a madman back toward the kitchen.
"Holy shit!" I screamed.
I frantically swiped the feed back to the yard.
He burst through the shattered rear door, sprinting across the lawn at full speed, his boots tearing up the grass.
"He’s going for the back wooden fence!" my lawyer yelled, throwing himself out of his seat.
The man reached the boundary line. Beyond my grandparents’ fence lay a heavily wooded drainage area that led to the highway. He threw his hands over the top beam, bracing his weight to vault over.
Suddenly, two officers materialized over the opposite side of the fence, rifles leveled directly at his chest.
"FREEZE! POLICE! GET ON THE GROUND!"
The man stopped dead, his arms hanging over the wood, trapped on all sides.
I practically leaped out of my chair, my fists clenching so hard my arms trembled. "YES! GET HIM!"
My lawyer gripped the edge of his desk, letting out a loud gasp. "They got him!"
But in the very next second, the man’s right hand darted wildly inside his heavy jacket.
The victorious smile died instantly on my face. My blood ran completely cold. "What the hell is he doing? What does he have?!"
He whipped his hand out, steel flashing in the afternoon sunlight. A long, lethal hunting knife.
"Oh, shit!" my lawyer gasped.
Instead of dropping the weapon or lunging at the officers, the man violently raised the blade and pressed the sharp edge directly against his own throat.
My entire body went numb. "No... no, no, no."
The man began screaming wildly at the officers surrounding him, his face contorted in insane rage, but the camera audio was too muffled to understand his desperate words.
"Can you hear what he’s shouting?!" I demanded, my hands shaking uncontrollably.
My lawyer shook his head, his face grim. "No! The feed is too distorted!"
On screen, the man’s hand trembled violently, digging the steel deeper into his skin.
My heart thundered in my ears like a sledgehammer. "Don’t do it, you bastard... don’t you dare..."
The tactical officers kept their red laser sights trained on his chest, screaming commands through the chaos. "DROP THE KNIFE! DROP IT NOW!"
The man shook his head maniacally, dragging the sharp tip across his neck
BANG!
A sharp, non-lethal suppressor crack echoed through the outdoor microphone.
The man’s right shoulder jerked violently backward. The hunting knife slipped from his fingers, clattering uselessly onto the grass.
He collapsed onto his knees, letting out a pain-filled howl before crashing face-first into the dirt.
Within half a second, four officers swarmed over him. One kicked the blade ten feet away across the lawn while two others pinned his torso to the ground, pulling his arms behind his back with brutal efficiency.
CLICK. CLICK.
The heavy steel handcuffs locked tightly around his wrists.
I stared at the wall monitor, completely frozen in place. Beside me, my lawyer didn’t breathe a word.
The man was alive. He was pinned. He was officially in chains.
It was over.
A sharp vibration buzzed against my palm. I lowered my eyes to my phone screen.
Private Investigator:It’s done. The perimeter is fully secured. You can go home now.
Before I could even process the words, a second message popped up immediately below it.
Private Investigator:I just ran a full sweep of his communications. He had no accomplices on site. You and your family are safe. For now.
I closed my eyes and let out a long, shuddering exhale, feeling the unbearable weight of the past three hours finally lift from my chest.
I looked up at my lawyer. He slowly nodded, a heavy sigh escaping him. "That... was unbelievable. Thank God."
He walked back around his desk, pulled out his chair, and calmly began straightening the legal files we had abandoned earlier. "Now... let’s get back to work."
I stared at him in utter astonishment. "Are you fucking serious right now? We just watched a tactical arrest on my grandparents’ lawn!"
He looked up at me, his expression turning entirely professional again. "The threat has been apprehended, Justin. Your grandparents are completely unharmed. And we still have a high-stakes trial to prepare for."
I dragged both hands over my face, letting out a breathless, disbelieving laugh as the reality truly set in. "Oh, thank God... thank God."
I turned back to the quiet screen, watching the officers haul the man away toward the police cruisers. "My grandparents are alive."
My chest finally loosened, warm air rushing back into my lungs.
Then, my phone began to vibrate violently in my hand, displaying a familiar, beautiful name across the screen.
Harper.
My heart did a soft, emotional flip. I immediately swiped the screen and pressed the phone to my ear.
"Babe?"
