Fated love: the unwanted bride
Chapter 2587: I Nearly Lost My Baby
"Ah? It’s already half-past nine, and it’s starting to get windy outside again." Erin Janus pouted and tugged on his arm, "Don’t go today, okay? Stay with me."
"I can’t, it’s a very important project, I need to keep a close eye on it."
"Sigh, Dad is really something, making you so busy. Alright, you can go, I know this project is important and can’t afford any mistakes. You’re doing it for the good of the company."
Erin Janus didn’t try to persuade Sylvan Cheney any further. She knew that once he decided on something, he was unstoppable.
Sylvan Cheney, though a man of few words, was very determined. Once he set his mind on something, nothing could hold him back.
Sylvan Cheney went to the parking lot, got into his car, and drove in the direction of the construction site. Under the night sky, the road was crowded, and his car moved slowly.
He rolled down the car window, letting the evening breeze, carrying the scent of wild grass, blow into the car and onto his face.
An evening intoxicated by the east wind.
The construction site was on an empty plot quite far from the city center, a yet-to-be-developed area, rather desolate and very quiet.
The financial district project was under construction. Although it was quite late, the workers were still working overtime.
After getting out of the car, Sylvan Cheney took a round of inspection and then chatted with the project manager.
"President, you’re here so late."
"Just came to take a look."
"Rest assured, I’m here, I’ll keep a close eye, there won’t be any mistakes."
"The second and third phases of the project start tomorrow as well, let’s speed it up." Sylvan Cheney glanced at the blueprints.
"Is it that urgent? President, should we have a meeting or something?"
"I’m fully responsible for this project, there’s no need for lengthy meetings, it’d just waste time. Better use that time to do something practical, right?" In the darkness, Sylvan Cheney looked into his eyes.
"That’s true, the President has vision."
"Mm, you get busy, I’ll look around further."
"Alright, take care."
Sylvan Cheney walked around the site again.
The wind was strong over the empty ground, with an occasional "woo-woo" sound in the air, and sometimes a few birds would take off from the treetops, their chirping particularly crisp.
As Sylvan Cheney walked, he suddenly saw a few fireflies flying around.
Pure little spirits, flickering with light, fluttering endlessly.
At the turn of summer to early autumn, there aren’t many fireflies, just twos and threes banding together, these little spirits’ silhouettes melding into Sylvan Cheney’s eyes, like tiny stars.
Sylvan Cheney’s gaze settled on the group of fireflies, without moving his feet or his eyes, just standing there.
Around him were the sounds of construction and the rustling of the wind through the grass, but he seemed to hear only the emptiness of a quiet world.
A firefly landed on his fingertip.
"Next year... Will you come with me to see them again?"
"Depends on your performance."
"What performance?"
"Depends on what you want your baby to call me."
"You almost cost me my baby, I haven’t even held you accountable yet, do you know how excessive you are."
"..."
"What else could they call you, call you uncle then."
...
In the wind, as if a voice sounded, Sylvan Cheney closed his eyes and rubbed his temples.
In this vast open-air space, there were gradually more fireflies, although they flew wearily, they were beautiful as they flew and danced in groups across the sky.
The ecological environment here was great, and without streetlights, the fireflies gathered in even greater numbers.
Sylvan Cheney walked across the open ground, with the group of fireflies following his steps, like small lanterns, illuminating the path beneath his feet.
