Chapter 481: 481-Getting Intense

Verity:

She said a few more things before leaving, and I couldn’t help feeling that her visit had done nothing but leave me stunned.

I turned around and locked the door, determined not to let her walk back into my home.

Then I headed straight to the guest room, flinging the door open so hard that it slammed against the wall.

"Get out!" I snapped, pointing toward the exit and making sure he could see how furious I was.

He was sitting on the couch, smiling, which only fueled my anger.

"What upset you so much?" he asked, getting to his feet and heading toward me.

He didn’t even bother to stop and have a mature conversation. Instead, he simply walked past me.

"What do you mean, what upset me? She threatened me! She made it sound like I’m deliberately trying to come between the brothers. How is it my fault that I’m mated to both of them?" I complained, following him with quick steps as he entered the kitchen and began looking around.

"You didn’t get the groceries last night?" he asked, sounding annoyed, as though nothing I’d just said mattered.

For a moment, I could only stare at him in disbelief, wondering what the fuck was wrong with him.

"Ragnar, why didn’t you tell me you’d texted everyone? Why didn’t you send me the same message you sent them?" I demanded, feeling the rage building inside me.

He turned away from the cabinets, folded his arms across his chest, and leaned to one side.

"Because I thought you already knew where I was." He clicked his tongue as though it were no big deal.

Then he unfolded his arms and started walking toward the living room, but I quickly sidestepped into his path, blocking his way with my arms crossed over my chest.

"No, you’re not getting away until you answer me," I demanded.

A strange smirk spread across his lips as he leaned down, placing one hand on the kitchen counter to bring his face level with mine.

"What? It’s morning, Verity, and you’re already craving my attention?"

My jaw clenched at his words, and I noticed his eyes narrowing as he studied me.

"What are you doing?" I hissed.

"I just want a warm breakfast. That’s all," he commented.

As he straightened his back, I realized I couldn’t keep playing house with him as though everything were normal. I had to confront him.

"No. You’re trying to come between me and my mates," I corrected him.

But I could already tell he wasn’t taking my concerns seriously, especially when one corner of his mouth curved upward in a smile that never reached his eyes.

"Jaguar said he’s marrying me," I finally revealed.

I’d expected him to have something to say about it, but judging by his expression, he barely seemed to register my words.

Well, no worries. It was time to change the game.

"Well..." He cleared his throat. "You’re not marrying him." He shrugged as though the matter were already settled.

"What makes you say that? I will marry him."

The moment those words left my mouth, he turned toward me, giving me his undivided attention.

"No, you won’t, Verity." There was a warning in his voice. "And I know what Gigi told you. Stay away from my brothers. It seems even she’s starting to catch on to why you’re probably here."

Finally, the Ragnar I knew was back. No cocky tone, no exaggerated expressions, just that familiar sternness as he walked past me with his head held high.

I followed him into the living room.

"And what exactly is that?" I asked, playing dumb.

"You’re here to take revenge on Gigi," he stated.

I rolled my eyes and planted my hands on my waist, making sure he understood just how ridiculous I found his accusation.

"What I don’t understand is why you’re targeting my brothers."

At that, my gaze shifted from the wall I’d been staring at back to him, my breathing slowly settling.

Having this conversation with Ragnar was something I’d never imagined we’d be doing, at least not for a very long time.

"You’re so wrong." I shrugged.

"Really? Am I?"

He headed toward my bedroom again.

I followed him but stopped just outside the doorway, watching with a frown as he lifted the mattress off my bed and reached underneath it.

What the hell was he doing?

I never kept anything there. I wasn’t such a careless player that I’d bring all my evidence home and scatter it around for anyone to find.

So what exactly was he looking for?

To my surprise, he pulled out several files before letting the mattress drop back onto the bed. It didn’t even settle properly into place.

He walked out, waved the files in front of my face, and tossed them onto the table.

My heart began to race as I stared at him, too stunned to react at first. Then my gaze followed the files, and I stepped closer to examine them.

The moment I saw the details written across those pages, my heartbeat quickened even more.

"When you left your home back on the mainland, you didn’t just leave to continue your studies. You weren’t interested in moving on with your life either. You were too busy trying to gather information about me and my brothers. You’ve been watching our every little move, Verity."

He delivered the accusation before casually throwing himself onto the couch, leaning his head all the way back with his arms spread across it and one foot tapping against the floor.

"This is bullshit," I protested.

But as I looked through the documents, I noticed they contained dates confirming where I’d lived, what I’d been doing since leaving, how many times I’d visited the mansion to question people about the brothers, and even the applications I’d submitted to different companies where they worked or were hiring.

"You do realize you’re the Alpha King, and your brothers are Alpha Kings too, right? Most of the biggest companies are under your control. I just wanted a job," I argued, refusing to give him the satisfaction of thinking he’d accomplished something.
