Fated To Three, And I Broke Them All
Chapter 499 His Future Wife
Chapter 499: 499-His Future Wife
Verity:
"Come on, let’s go. The bodyguards will be here any minute to clean up the place."
He started walking toward the door before he uttered.
"The crime scene, I mean."
I was just about to follow him when those last words made me stop.
"What do you mean, crime scene?"
My gaze slowly shifted toward the corner of the living room.
That was when I noticed the pillows and cushions, still soaked in blood.
My stomach tightened.
"Where is Oswin?" I asked, making Ragnar glance back at me.
"Why are you so shocked? You were planning to do exactly what I did."
He turned and walked out of the cabin.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Then I slowly followed him outside, my steps growing hesitant as my eyes caught something on the muddy ground.
Drag marks.
They stretched away from the cabin and continued toward the woods.
I stared at them, my heart beginning to pound.
For a brief moment, I could almost picture Ragnar dragging Oswin’s lifeless body through the mud and into the trees.
"What happened?"
Ragnar’s voice startled me.
He’d turned around and was snapping his fingers in front of me, trying to pull me out of my thoughts.
I looked up at him before my gaze drifted back toward the marks on the ground.
Ragnar followed my line of sight.
"Better that I got rid of him," he remarked with a casual shrug before turning around and continuing to walk toward the car.
My heart sank in my chest.
He’d come here and killed Oswin.
But why?
He could have kept Oswin alive and used him against me.
With everything Oswin knew, Ragnar could have easily made my life miserable.
Yet he’d chosen to get rid of him instead.
What the hell was Ragnar playing at?
I had to silently follow him since there was nothing else I could do.
As soon as we reached the car parked along the road, Ragnar opened the passenger door for me.
I climbed inside, and he shut the door before walking around to the driver’s side and settling behind the wheel.
I didn’t feel like moving at all.
My entire body had gone numb, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being arrested without handcuffs.
How had my plan fallen apart so quickly?
I felt like a complete idiot.
After years of careful planning and hard work, Ragnar had managed to catch us in no time.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I barely noticed him leaning across the center console to grab my seat belt.
"It’s okay. I can do it myself. You don’t need to babysit me," I complained.
But he ignored my protest and pulled the belt across my chest, fastening it into the buckle beside my hip.
Then he started the engine and leaned back comfortably, one hand resting on the steering wheel while the other settled between us, his fingers tapping against the center console, moving in a weird rhythm.
"How did you know you’d find me there?" I asked after a brief silence.
"You really can’t stand silence, can you?"
I groaned, my brows drawing together in irritation.
God, he was annoying.
I folded my arms across my chest and turned toward the window, refusing to look at him.
It drove me crazy whenever he came up with some clever or witty response instead of answering a simple question.
"I went to your house. Saw him threatening you, so I followed you," Ragnar finally explained.
I immediately turned my head toward him.
"Why didn’t you follow him instead? You would’ve saved me all this trouble."
I kept my eyes on his face, but he remained focused on the road.
"Why would I follow a stranger?" he replied before turning his head slightly toward me, a smirk tugging at his lips. "Besides, I wanted to follow my wife, instead of a rando,"
I groaned again and rolled my eyes.
"You do realize that after this marriage and everything you’ve done, Gigi is going to distance herself from you, right?"
This time, I deliberately let a little smugness creep into my voice.
"And since when did you start caring about Gigi?" he questioned.
I rolled my eyes once more.
I noticed him adjust the rearview mirror slightly, angling it so that I could see his eyes in the reflection whenever I glanced at it, while he could catch a glimpse of me.
"Your brothers are going to be angry with you, too," I reminded him.
"And why does that bother you?"
There he went again.
I rolled my eyes.
"You know, one of these days, I’m going to pluck those eyes right out if you keep rolling them at me."
The moment those words left his mouth, I jerked upright and turned sharply toward him.
Ragnar let out a quiet chuckle.
"I won’t actually do it. Don’t worry," he added, looking far too pleased with himself.
I slowly settled back into my seat.
That little laugh of his, the one he always seemed to let out whenever he succeeded in getting on my nerves, was so fucking irritating.
Ragnar was an incredibly annoying man, and I was only beginning to realize just how much.
"So, are we heading to the mansion now?" I asked.
He snorted softly, almost laughing to himself.
I could practically hear his earlier remark again.
You really can’t stand silence, can you?
And this time, he didn’t even bother answering.
I slowly sank farther into my seat, feeling anxiety begin to creep up on me.
The worst part was that he was right.
I didn’t want to sit in silence because I knew exactly what would happen once I stopped talking.
My mind would start making all the noise instead.
And it was already happening.
I lowered my gaze to my lap, where my hands rested together, and began scratching at the skin around my fingers without even realizing it.
Memories from my past started coming back to me, one after another, and none of them were pleasant.
To be honest, marriage had never even crossed my mind.
