Chapter 339: Malicious Gaze
Chapter 339: Chapter 339: Malicious Gaze
Shi Lan had just finished talking with Doctor Wang and was planning to discuss the rotation with her husbands that afternoon. But they brought it up to her first. Starting tomorrow, they would officially follow the previous order. Because Ye Ming was away, Shi Lan had three extra days to herself.
Shi Lan breathed a quiet sigh of relief, very satisfied with this arrangement.
However, life in the military was indeed hard. Jiang Xia and Mu Tangfeng had only been there for half a day. The two young masters, who had never known hardship, stubbornly held back, driven by a fierce determination not to let anyone laugh at their wife for marrying such useless Beast Husbands. Their faces were flushed red, veins bulged from exhaustion, yet they didn’t utter a single complaint during training.
Fortunately, their spiritual power was high. It was even more difficult for the males with weaker spiritual power.
It was the new recruits’ first day, so He Hanshi didn’t arrange for them to go to the Insect Clan battlefield. They first needed to get familiar with military life and discipline to prevent accidents caused by disobedient soldiers on the battlefield.
But even this familiarization process was unavoidably grueling.
So, when it was time for dinner that evening, the moment Jiang Xia saw Shi Lan, he couldn’t help but pitifully beg for a hug. "Wife, I’m so tired. My hands hurt, my legs hurt, and my head hurts too."
The cafeteria was a bit crowded, but since Jiang Xia was being so forward, Shi Lan couldn’t bear to refuse him. She gave him a loving hug, then quickly let go and asked with concern, "What’s wrong?"
Feeling a little better from his wife’s comfort, Jiang Xia muttered, "The army’s training is too intense."
He was a Pallas’s cat who would get winded just from running and jumping around too much in Black Ming Star Prison. But he felt that the amount of exercise he did this afternoon surpassed what he’d done in the past several decades.
Beside them, Mu Tangfeng didn’t say a word, but his eyes were fixed on Shi Lan. Shi Lan’s scalp tingled; she knew he was getting jealous again. She immediately gave him a hug as well. Only then did he crack a smile and snort haughtily, "Short-legged beast, looks like you really can’t handle it. A 2S Beastman like you can’t even take this little bit of exercise."
Jiang Xia glared at him unhappily. "Pot calling the kettle black. Who was secretly gasping for air this afternoon with their legs shaking?"
Yan Huoshui, on the other hand, wasn’t too bothered. Although he hadn’t formally enlisted, he was a former teacher at Imperial Capital University and often held training classes of his own.
It was just all rather novel. He used to be the one training others, and now the roles were reversed, and he was the one being trained.
He clicked his tongue. ’But none of that matters. What’s important is that she hasn’t hugged me.’
He let out a soft sigh, happening to walk right beside Shi Lan. Her ears twitched, and she immediately hugged him. "You’ve worked hard too."
"Everyone’s worked hard."
Yan Huoshui smiled and patted her head. "It’s no hardship, wife. I have excellent stamina. I can satisfy all your needs."
Perhaps because she’d watched a steamy drama at noon, Shi Lan’s mind immediately went into the gutter, and her face flushed red.
She glanced at He Hanshi, who was standing silently to the side. He had been in the army for years and was long accustomed to this level of training, so it didn’t faze him at all. Still, determined to treat everyone equally, Shi Lan gave him a hug as well.
His azure eyes lowered, his gaze instantly softening.
’Lanlan is the best.’
Shi Lan thought her hugs had been quick and discreet. But as the only 3S female capable of healing the collapse value to zero, even if many males didn’t say it, they were all secretly envious of He Hanshi and the others. They wanted to become one of her Beast Husbands, and they could hardly control their stolen glances.
In the past, however, He Hanshi would just have to give them a silent look, and their stares would immediately become more subtle.
But now, it wasn’t just He Hanshi they had to deal with. With three more pairs of cold, sharp eyes on them, they didn’t even dare to steal a glance, liable to be discovered at any moment by the perceptive males.
During rest periods outside of training, spontaneous spars were allowed. These were friendly bouts that stopped before any real harm was done, and many males participated. A male who was challenged would generally not refuse.
Yan Huoshui secretly memorized the faces of a few of them. So, after they’d settled in a bit, he would pick one or two "lucky" individuals to go up against each day.
Jiang Xia and Mu Tangfeng suffered through the tough parts of training, but as 2S males, they were full of energy. They followed Yan Huoshui’s example and launched their own attacks on some of the annoying love rivals.
And so, in just one week, the stares directed at Shi Lan cleared up considerably.
She could clearly feel it. When they went to the cafeteria to eat, there were far fewer eyes on them.
Shi Lan assumed everyone had just gotten used to them and they were no longer such a novelty, so she didn’t think much of it.
However, with fewer stares, her focus sharpened, and she began to feel a malicious gaze from within the crowd. It wasn’t just in the cafeteria; sometimes, when she went to find He Hanshi and the others, she would feel that prickling on her back.
But every time she turned around to look for the source, she found nothing.
Shi Lan was certain the gaze was very well hidden. It was only thanks to her high Spiritual Power Level and strong perception that she could detect it at all.
Shi Lan tended to trust her sixth sense. Even though she hadn’t seen anyone suspicious, she still told her Beast Husbands about it.
He Hanshi’s expression turned serious. "Lanlan, when did you start feeling it?"
Perhaps because the gaze was primarily focused on Shi Lan, and was very subtle, He Hanshi and the others hadn’t noticed it. But they didn’t take it lightly.
Shi Lan thought about it seriously for a moment. "It seems to have started after the new recruits arrived."
A cold glint flashed in Yan Huoshui’s eyes. "These new recruits were screened by the review office, but that doesn’t mean they’re all clean. There are a lot of new recruits, a mixed bag. The probability that someone has malicious intentions is high."
He Hanshi said gravely, "I’m familiar with the backgrounds of the veterans in the army. But the new recruits are just a volunteer force, their tours aren’t long, and with all the recent trouble with the Insect Clan, I haven’t had time to investigate them yet."
Jiang Xia looked at Shi Lan with worry. "Admiral He, what do we do then? Who knows what this kind of person is secretly planning? What if he hurts Lanlan..."
Mu Tangfeng scolded unhappily, "Don’t say that, you short-legged beast! Who told you to say such inauspicious things? Can’t you wish for something good for Lanlan?"
Jiang Xia immediately slapped himself in the mouth. "Right, right, I shouldn’t say things like that."
"But, it was just a reasonable suspicion..." he mumbled.
Yan Huoshui continued, "If it’s really one of a new recruit, it just so happens the three of us are in the new recruit barracks. We’ll keep a closer eye on them for a while. If we see any recruit acting strangely, we’ll just grab them and send them to He Hanshi, no questions asked."
"He’s an Admiral. He can legitimately investigate the new recruits’ situations."
"Then why not investigate right now?"
Jiang Xia looked at him in confusion. Yan Huoshui analyzed, "This person was able to deliberately avoid our perception, so they must be very cautious. Announcing an investigation now might tip them off. Right now, they think we don’t know, so they’ll have the guts to do more."
"Of course, the best thing would be to contact Ye Ming. Have him re-check the new recruits’ files at the review office from his end. If we work on it from both sides, it’ll be safer."
With Shi Lan’s safety at stake, none of them dared to be careless.
