First Night with the Army: The Stoic Big Shot Is Done Pretending

Chapter 208 - 207: Buy a Cell Phone, Get a Free Pager

  • Next Chapter

Wen Ci and Wen Yaozu were enthusiastically invited into a shop by a salesperson. Inside, they sold not only brick phones but also pagers.

"Ma’am, our department store is running a special promotion right now. Buy one brick phone, and you get a free pager. Are you interested in learning more?"

Ever since brick phones hit the market, the price of pagers had started to drop. Many department stores were even running promotions, such as giving away a free pager with the purchase of a brick phone.

Wen Ci’s eyes lit up. Her gaze swept over the rows of pagers on the counter, and she asked in pleasant surprise, "You give away a pager if you buy a brick phone?"

"That’s right."

Wen Ci asked, "Which pager model is it?"

’Pagers could range from a few hundred yuan to over a thousand. If the model they were giving away wasn’t too outdated, it would be worth taking them up on the offer.’

’That way, when she returned to the Northwest, she could use the pager to stay in touch with Wen Yaozu.’

"This one."

The salesperson went back behind the counter, took out one of the pagers, and said with a wide smile, "This model came out the year before last."

Wen Ci took it and turned it over in her hands.

It was the first time she had ever handled a pager. She fiddled with the clip meant for a belt, noting the battery indicator on the screen. "What was the original price for this one?"

"Fifteen hundred yuan."

Wen Ci’s eyes widened.

’What a steal!’

’A forty-thousand-yuan brick phone, and they throw in a fifteen-hundred-yuan pager for free. It sounded like a great deal no matter how you looked at it.’ "Are there any other promotions?"

"Ma’am, this is a one-time offer."

As one of Beijing’s premier department stores, they were running this promotion specifically to attract high-end customers for the brick phones.

Forty thousand yuan might not sound like an astronomical sum, but on the outskirts of Beijing, it was enough to buy a plot of land and build a house. And that was just the cost of the phone itself.

There were also monthly network access fees on top of that.

Wen Ci glanced at the prices for the brick phones, biting her lower lip in hesitation. "Will this even work somewhere like the Northwest?" she asked.

"Um, I’m not really sure about that. You could ask the telecom company. Their office is just three hundred meters to the left of the department store’s exit."

"Thank you."

’Wen Ci decided she would ask the telecom company first before even considering a purchase. If she couldn’t use it back in the Northwest, the phone would be nothing more than a useless brick.’

-

Each floor of the department store sold different items. When they arrived at the clothing section, they were met with a dazzling array of different styles, a feast for the eyes.

"Ma’am, looking for some clothes?"

Wen Ci nodded. "Where’s the men’s department?"

"For the little boy?"

Wen Yaozu tilted his head up. "I’m not a little boy. I’m about to start middle school."

Wen Ci raised a hand and gave Wen Yaozu a playful chop on the head.

Half an hour later, they had picked out a good number of outfits for Wen Yaozu.

After paying, Wen Ci asked, "I’m looking for Manager Li Ming. Is he available?"

"He is. And you are...?"

Wen Ci’s eyes crinkled into a smile. "I have an appointment with him."

"Please wait a moment."

’She had come to see the department store manager to negotiate a profit-sharing deal for her clothes. Once that was settled, she could consider buying Xu Jinghe’s remaining stock.’

Before long, Manager Li walked out with a smile. "You must be Boss Wen?"

"That’s me."

-

After finishing her business, Wen Ci prepared to head to the telecom company, only to find they had already closed for the day when she got to the door. She couldn’t help but gasp.

’Was this a sign from the heavens not to buy the brick phone?’

"Sis, are you still going to buy the brick phone?"

Wen Ci thought for a moment. "Let’s go home first. We’ll figure it out tomorrow."

They had just gotten home when the landline started ringing. Wen Yaozu dashed over, grabbing the receiver. "I’ll get it!"

"Brother-in-law! When are you coming back?"
