Chapter 2363: Chapter 167: I Won’t Let Them Hurt You
“I learned lip-reading as part of a mission before.”
Upon hearing this, Momo’s small face was slightly startled, and it suddenly turned a shade paler.
Her heart’s beating slowed down by two beats in his cool tone, and she couldn’t distinguish what she felt inside.
There was shock, anger, melancholy, and bitterness…
For a moment, it was like knocking over a bottle of seasoning.
She looked at his sharply handsome side profile, at his tightly pressed thin lips, and suddenly resented herself.
Why couldn’t she control her own heart?
Why did all her emotions get influenced by him?
If he felt towards her even a fraction of what she felt towards him, he wouldn’t have left indifferently last night after seeing Huo Song confess to her.
And now, he’s telling her in such a tone.
She pressed her lips together, forcefully suppressing the layers of sourness and sadness that arose inside her, “Huo Song is just a senior brother.”
With this, it should be obvious, right?
She told herself that liking someone means liking them.
Either she continues to like him or cuts off her feelings before falling too deep.
Her eyes were fixed resolutely on him.
Her hands, unable to hide her nervousness, clasped tightly in front of her, even though this wasn’t an explicit confession, it was the first time she did something like this in over twenty years.
Her heart, which had slowed down earlier, now beat faster and faster, pounding fiercely in her ears, while the man in the driver’s seat remained expressionless.
Only the firmness of his thin lips subtly increased in her answer, revealing his determined jawline.
The road ahead was sparse with vehicles, and his car slowed down accordingly.
He slowly turned his head, his deep eyes meeting the woman’s bright ones, just then, a car behind suddenly accelerated to overtake theirs.
Ye Zhan’s peripheral vision caught sight of the person inside the car, and in a flash, his handsome face darkened as he sternly warned Momo, who was about to lower the car window, “Don’t lower the window, sit tight.”
With those words, he slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
The Land Rover accelerated suddenly, causing Momo’s body to lurch violently due to inertia, instinctively grabbing onto something for balance.
Not understanding what was happening, she looked at Ye Zhan in shock.
She hadn’t even noticed the Land Rover speeding up.
“Sit tight.”
Momo dazedly uttered an “Oh.”
Though she wasn’t verbally expressing fear, her face had turned pale.
And as the car behind closely pursued, Ye Zhan was driving at incredible speed, weaving left and right along the road.
Reaching the intersection up ahead, he abandoned the crowded main road and turned into a less trafficked path.
Momo couldn’t take the constant jolting any longer, her stomach turning over repeatedly as she covered her mouth with her hand, face white with the effort to hold back.
“Feeling really uncomfortable?”
“I can bear it.”
Momo, one hand covering her mouth, suddenly remembered and used her other hand to unzip her bag, “Should we call the police?”
“Call Jinchen.”
Ye Zhan took this route as an enemy luring tactic.
Hearing that Momo, despite her discomfort, could still remain rational, a complex emotion flickered in his eyes.
He gave the instruction in a deep voice.
But as long as their car didn’t stop and the windows stayed up, the others couldn’t do anything to him.
Momo, fighting back the urge to vomit, shakily found Tang Jinchen’s number and dialed twice before it connected.
“Don’t be afraid.”
Ye Zhan’s soothing voice resonated in her ears.
Momo shook her head lightly.
She didn’t want him to be distracted by worrying about her.
But his voice continued, “I won’t let them hurt you.”
Her hands hesitated for a moment, and she dialed Tang Jinchen’s number.
“Put it on speaker.”
“Okay.”
The phone rang three times, and Tang Jinchen’s voice came through the phone, “Hello…”
“Ye Zhan, they’ve left.”
Momo suddenly exclaimed urgently.
Ye Zhan’s expression changed, and he briefly instructed Tang Jinchen before hanging up.
Ye Zhan gritted his teeth, his eyes cold and stern.
“I’ll take you to the airport.”
Ye Zhan interrupted Momo’s words.
With deep eyes looking at her, Bo Yi’s tightly pressed lips eased slightly as his emotions retreated like the tide.
After a moment, he said blandly, “Huo Song is a good person.”
Momo stared at him blankly.
For a long while, she couldn’t snap out of it.
After Ye Zhan said that, he focused on driving and didn’t speak any further.
But Momo felt the underlying chill and detachment seeping from his very core.
A wave of tiny, dense sadness surged in her heart, the kind of situation she had just bravely endured, and suddenly her eyes were wet.
This was the first time she had liked a man.
“Do you think I should accept his feelings?”
She asked stiffly.
Her slender fingers tightly gripped the phone, her moist eyes remarkably bright and stubborn, determined.
Ye Zhan just gave a light “Mm.”
This response felt like an invisible knife plunging into Momo’s heart.
She felt like crying from the pain.
Tears welled in her eyes.
Yet she forced out a faint smile on her pale face.
It was a heartbreaking, slightly melancholic smile.
She turned to look out the window, then faced Ye Zhan again, pushing back the tears in her eyes and hiding all her emotions.
“I’ve said before, if I start a relationship, I won’t help you act anymore.”
“Mm.”
…
Afterward, there was silence for the rest of the way.
At the airport, Ye Zhan insisted on escorting Momo inside.
But Momo refused.
“No need, my senior brother is over there.”
She pointed to a figure at the airport entrance, her smile gentle.
Following her gaze, Ye Zhan’s eyes darkened slightly, recalling the message she sent in the car.
It must have been sent to Huo Song.
He nodded, deciding not to escort her further.
In the distance, Huo Song walked quickly toward Momo, and she walked toward him.
Ye Zhan stood still, watching Huo Song take Momo’s luggage and talk to her as they entered the airport.
An urgent phone ringtone interrupted his thoughts; seeing the caller ID, his eyes lowered as he turned and got into the car, long fingers pressing the answer button.
