Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat
Chapter 182: The Blast
The crowd at the San Siro broke into that familiar Italian anthem again, the one about laying down your life for a goal. Tens of thousands of voices boomed in unison, and under all that noise, Inter held complete control over the pitch.
With Mateo suffocated in the middle, Schalke had zero rhythm. Half an hour had slipped away without a single chance. Farfán was running into a brick wall trying to beat Zanetti, Huntelaar could not get an inch around Maicon on the opposite touchline, and Vardy was getting completely swallowed up by the two central defenders.
Up in the booths, the commentators were already laying out the harsh verdict: the gap in class was simply too wide, Schalke lacked the pedigree for this stage, and expecting an eighteen-year-old to unlock an experienced Italian defense by himself was pure fantasy.
Mateo couldn't hear any of it, and even if he could, he wouldn't have cared.
He stepped slightly away from Cambiasso and waved Jones over.
Jones jogged across, wiping sweat from his forehead with his wrist. Mateo leaned in close and pointed toward the attacking third.
"Swap with me," Mateo said quietly. "Push up into my spot. Play high."
Jones blinked, understanding immediately. "Like against Dortmund?"
"Just like Dortmund," Mateo said. "Go sit in their midfield gap and l
et me drop deep."
It was not an order from the bench, and Mateo was not wearing the captain's armband. But they had pulled off this exact tactical switch in the derby to break through Bender and Kehl, and it had worked like a charm. Jones trusted Mateo's reading of the game completely. With a firm nod, the American turned and pushed straight up the pitch.
On the touchline, Magath spotted the switch immediately. One of his assistant coaches jumped off the bench, looking ready to shout across the grass to fix the shape.
"Boss, should I call them to reset?" the assistant asked.
"Leave it," Magath said, his eyes glued to the center circle. A slight smirk touched his face. "The boy remembers Dortmund. He sees what needs doing. Let him work."
Leonardo watched the rotation from the Inter technical area and dismissed it with a wave of his hand. A physical, hard-tackling enforcer being pushed into the attacking hole? Probably just a desperate long-shot threat or a decoy to win headers. Leonardo pressed both hands down toward his midfield line, signaling his players to stick with the game plan. He wanted Cambiasso and Stanković to stay stuck to Mateo, figuring that if Schalke wanted to park a defensive destroyer in the creative pocket, Inter would gladly let them.
For a few minutes, Leonardo's reaction seemed totally justified.
Cambiasso and Stanković stayed glued to Mateo like shadows. Jones, now sitting in the attacking pocket, looked visibly awkward whenever the ball reached his boots. He simply collected passes, protected the ball with his broad back, and laid it straight back to Rakitić. Motta stood nearby to smother any forward turns, and since Jones had spent his entire career breaking up plays rather than making them, Inter seemed completely untroubled.
Then Mateo made his move.
He casually drifted forty yards back into his own half, well away from the edge of Inter's defensive shape. Jones, reading the movement, pushed right into the gap Mateo had vacated. The two had completely traded roles, with the primary playmaker sitting alongside the center-backs while the midfield destroyer hovered right around the penalty arc.
That simple switch handed Cambiasso and Stanković a tactical puzzle with no clean solution. If they followed Mateo forty yards back into his own defensive third, they would open up massive acres of green grass in the center of the pitch. If they stayed put, they were leaving one of Europe's most dangerous passers totally free to look up with the ball. They hesitated, caught between both choices, and ended up covering neither.
In the 39th minute, the window finally cracked open.
Mateo collected a roll from Neuer deep in his own half. For the very first time all evening, he had room to lift his head and survey the entire pitch. Farfán and Huntelaar immediately dropped toward him to create passing angles, stretching Inter's defensive block horizontally.
Mateo pushed the ball forward with his right boot, shifting the attack toward the right before checking back. Sneijder charged in aggressively to close down the space, but Mateo waited out the Dutchman's lunge, shifted the ball to his left, and slipped it cleanly right through Sneijder's open legs.
He stepped smoothly past the nutmeg and broke into thirty yards of open grass.
Seeing him running loose, Cambiasso and Stanković abandoned their positions entirely and sprinted toward him to close the trap.
That was the exact reaction Mateo had set up.
Right before either veteran could get near enough to foul him, Mateo stroked a crisp, weighted ball forward into the open pocket the two midfielders had just deserted. The pass rolled straight to Jones. Cambiasso turned hard on his heel to recover, while Thiago Motta slid across to challenge. But the moment the leather reached Jones, the Partner Card clicked in.
Jones, a man whose game was entirely built on rough tackles and bruising aerial duels, suddenly dropped his left shoulder with unexpected grace. With one fluid flick of the outside of his boot, he rolled the ball laterally, leaving Thiago Motta lunging awkwardly at thin air.
Motta's eyes went wide with pure shock. He looked genuinely baffled that a defensive enforcer had just pulled off a silky turn.
The ball rolled into the open grass toward the corner of the box, and Mateo arrived on a dead sprint, perfectly timing his secondary run.
With César already leaning toward the near post, Mateo clipped the ball with the inside of his right boot, lifting a delicate, curling cross toward the edge of the six-yard box. The delivery dipped sharply over the reach of the center-backs.
Chivu and Ranocchia had their eyes completely glued to Vardy's movement near the back stick. Not a single defender had bothered tracking the defensive midfielder who had created the opening.
Jones timed his arrival to absolute perfection, drew his right leg back, and caught the dropping cross cleanly on the half-volley.
The strike hit the back of the net with an explosive crack. The shot flew flat, straight, and violent from fourteen yards out, passing Júlio César before the Brazilian keeper could even raise a glove.
The net snapped back hard.
For a split second, the San Siro fell completely silent. The booming chants died in seventy thousand throats at once. In that brief, stunned quiet, a tight pack of white shirts raced toward the corner flag.
Mateo got there first, wrapping his arms around Jones and tackling him straight to the turf. Farfán jumped right on top of both of them, followed by Huntelaar, Vardy, and Rakitić, turning the corner into a wild pile of shouting players right in front of the silent home end.
Down at the bottom of the heap, Jones was roaring at the top of his lungs, pounding the turf with his open palm.
Over on the touchline, Magath caught his assistant by the shoulders, shaking him in celebration before breaking into a wide grin. Across the grass, Leonardo stood with his hands on his hips, staring down at the grass in disbelief.
With three minutes left before half-time, Schalke had pulled level at the San Siro against the reigning champions of Europe.
Mateo leaped straight onto Jones's back, wrapping his arms around his neck and laughing into his ear. Jones staggered under the weight, grinning like a man who couldn't believe what he had just pulled off. He carried him a few paces before setting him back down so they could jog to the center circle.
Around them, the stadium noise slowly began to rebuild, but the earlier arrogance was completely gone.
