Chapter 1393: Chapter 1407: Can We Still Be Friends?

"What’s even more of a coincidence is that we actually go to neighboring schools," Xie Yuting covered her mouth and laughed softly, an ease in her eyes she couldn’t quite put into words.

Lin Junyang looked at the gentle, smiling expression in Xie Yuting’s brows and eyes, and the smile at the corner of his lips gradually faded as his gaze shifted away, a little ill at ease.

Xie Yuting seemed to realize something too and gave a light cough. "Junyang, we..."

Lin Junyang turned his head, meeting the eager look in Xie Yuting’s eyes, his handsome, cool features calm and indifferent.

Xie Yuting’s eyes flickered in flustered evasion. "I mean, can we still be friends? Just friends, you know... I don’t really have any friends, I’ve never been interested in my parents’ circle, and the Chen Family side..."

"We can," before Xie Yuting could finish, Lin Junyang replied.

Getting Lin Junyang’s answer, the corners of Xie Yuting’s lips lifted slightly. "Thank you, Junyang."

"There’s nothing to thank me for. Didn’t you say it yourself, we’re friends," Lin Junyang said softly. She was still the same as before, maybe even more cautious than she used to be.

To think she had to tread this carefully just to be friends with him. Even if she didn’t say it, he would still treat her as a friend.

What had made her live so gingerly like this—the Chen Family? Or that bastard Chen Sheng?

Xie Yuting lowered her head and smiled. "Yes, we’re friends. It’s getting late, I should go."

With that, she turned, got into the car, and waved at Lin Junyang again.

Lin Junyang also lifted his hand in a wave, then shoved both hands into his pockets, watching that white SUV drive off into the distance.

Through the rearview mirror, Xie Yuting watched the man seeing her off with his eyes the whole way, and the corners of her mouth curved up.

On Tuesday afternoon there was no class in the last period, so An Ran told Lu Yi she was heading out and left school early.

Ever since Mu Xingfeng was transferred away, she had moved back to the dorm again. On the one hand it put him at ease, and on the other, the dorm felt lively; with Xiao Xiao and classmates around, it wasn’t so lonely.

Ever since she came back from Shengwen Welfare Institute over the weekend, she had sent a message to Mu Xingfeng, and he hadn’t replied. Counting today, it had already been two days with no news from him.

When Mu Xingfeng was usually on missions, he didn’t carry his personal phone with him; An Ran knew this.

It was just that this time he’d gone along on the president’s state visit. Before, even if he didn’t reply right away, he’d never gone this long without any word. Could something have happened? Or was it just inconvenient?

Longteng Xinyuan was only two subway stops from campus. After leaving school, An Ran first went to a nearby supermarket to buy groceries. When she saw the chili peppers on the shelf, she instinctively grabbed a bag of small dried chilies and tossed it into the cart. After walking a few steps, she remembered that Mu Xingfeng had already been transferred to the Imperial City, and put the chilies back.

Habit really is a terrifying thing.

After paying, she walked home.

She hadn’t been back here in two weeks. The apartment felt even colder and emptier; a thin layer of dust had settled on the table.

She put the groceries in the kitchen, rolled up her sleeves, and started tidying up.

In less than half an hour, looking at the freshly cleaned home, An Ran let out a breath.

She felt she ought to come back and stay more often. If that didn’t work, she’d have Xiao Xiao move out of the dorm with her. After all, this place was close to school.

Here, she could still catch traces of Mu Xingfeng’s presence. Sitting in this home that belonged to the two of them, her heart didn’t feel quite so empty.

It was still early. An Ran checked her phone—still no messages—so she opened a game to kill time.

But just as the game interface loaded, a call from Mu Wanxin came in.

Now that Mu Wanxin was pregnant and still had to take care of the company, and her days with Shen Wenxuan were sweet and cozy, she rarely called An Ran anymore.
