Chapter 1549: Chapter 1564: Unable to Adapt

Mu Xingfeng didn’t stay long in Nan’an. He left for the Imperial City two days later, as there were other comrades returning together. An Ran didn’t go to see him off. Before heading out, Mu Xingfeng repeatedly reminded her not to leave school unless necessary, and wherever she goes, she must bring Fang Hui and Zhang Liang.

An Ran was already used to Mu Xingfeng’s caution towards her. Even though she felt there wouldn’t be any danger in broad daylight, to put Mu Xingfeng’s mind at ease, she agreed to his requests one by one. Of course, she would never act in defiance secretly.

Hearing An Ran mention she would return to the Imperial City by Christmas, Mu Xingfeng felt a heavy breath of relief. Calculating the time, it was just over a week until Christmas. Once she arrived in the Imperial City and by his side, there would no longer be the feeling of seeing but not catching.

This feeling truly left him at a loss, especially with the presence of that mysterious person.

Since parting at the school gate that day, Zheng Kai had disappeared for two days. An Ran felt uneasy, so she specifically asked his roommates about him. Learning he hadn’t returned to the dormitory for two days, she called Dean Fang.

It’s not that she thinks her charm is so great that someone would seek a short end if she declines their confession. But she has always regarded Zheng Kai as a friend. Even if he was feeling down, it was right to care for him, especially when he hadn’t attended classes or returned to the dorm, which was indeed worrisome.

From Dean Fang’s call, she learned that Zheng Kai had been staying at the rehabilitation center with the grandparents there, which eased her worries.

She knew Zheng Kai was an emotionally sensitive young man. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so fond of volunteering at the rehabilitation center and the welfare home. A person with such compassion is often emotionally rich and loyal. If possible, she didn’t want someone as kind as him to be hurt.

The day after she called Dean Fang, Zheng Kai came to school and greeted An Ran as usual. It seemed he had forgotten the events of that day completely.

She knew this was probably a form of pretense, but she chose not to expose him.

Yet what surprised her was that while Zheng Kai pretended everything was fine with her, he turned hostile when facing Xiao Xiao, as if Xiao Xiao was the one who rejected him and returned kindness with resentment.

However, she no longer had the mind to care about these things. As the wedding date drew closer, calls from the Mu Family and Shen Family kept coming, mostly regarding her opinions on the wedding.

At first, it was once a day, later increasing to two or three times daily. An Ran felt that if she hadn’t planned to return to the Imperial City by Christmas, she probably wouldn’t have found peace in Nan’an.

During the break on the 23rd, An Ran talked to Lu Yi about her leave. It wasn’t that she trusted the class monitor too much, but rather she always felt somewhat embarrassed about discussing her matters with Tang Huacheng.

Lu Yi declined, however, saying, "An Ran, I don’t have the authority to approve your leave. You know I can only grant one day off."

"I know, but I really don’t know how to talk to Tang," An Ran lamented, leaning her head against the desk, looking utterly dejected.

She had thought long and hard about it. If she lied, Tang Huacheng, knowing Mu Xingfeng, might expose her falsehood immediately. But even thinking about asking for a marriage leave directly, her face felt hot.
