Formless Ascension: My Affinity Is Limitless
Chapter 341: A Human?!
Lyra Starweaver’s POV
What a willing dog, Lyra thought as she watched Theron bark orders and head toward the cannons placed at strategic points around their island.
Due to a few lucky encounters, Theron had stumbled into her laps, a Half-Dragonkin Half-Elf that had self-confidence issues.
Smitten by her ethereal looks, he had fallen for her at first sight. That, coupled with how well Lyra had played him — a few sweet words here and there to boost his ego and confidence — he had basically become a guard dog around her.
That Highborn bitch, Eileen Ra’Elis and her weird sister Eifrith won’t know what’s coming! A Half-Dragonkin Half-Elf, on my side! I can barely believe my luck!
The Elves liked to think themselves noble beyond compare. The only race they’d come to acknowledge in this competition were the Dragonkin, and that was because of their unparalleled strength.
Though difficult to swallow, it was still a reasonable thing to accept — the Elves weren’t the most powerful two-legged race in the universe, but at least they were the second.
But even that turned out to be wrong.
One could only imagine their surprise after they learned there was a half breed version of their race and the Dragonkin. One that was more like them than the Dragonkin, but more physically powerful in every way — an area where the Elves were generally lacking in.
The Half-Dragonkin Half-Elves were like a more complete version of Elves. Lyra knew this, she could see it herself.
I’ll bind this guy to me, make him crave me with every fibre of his being. His thoughts will be only of me for the entire duration of the buffer period. And after we finally join the Grand Multiverse, he will come running like the dog he is... Lyra thought, a devious smile on her face. I can only imagine how much we will shake up back home.
Her thoughts wandered, imagining how dominant her force would become back on her home planet with the added aid of a powerful Half-Dragonkin Half-Elf, when all of a sudden, their island finally made contact with the enemy island.
A loud rumble vibrated through the ground, nearly rocking her off her feet as both islands brushed against each other hard.
"Rain down fire on them!!" Theron barked to the Trolls.
In an instant, the sky was lit up with streams of bright red and pure white. Plasma cannons and Ice cannons peppered the enemy island with rounds upon rounds of spells.
It was a total bombardment.
A dense curtain of smoke and mist blanketed the entire surface of the enemy island until virtually nothing remained visible.
"That’s enough, Theron," Lyra called out softly. "We don’t want to ruin the island, or worse, shatter their shard, after all."
Theron nodded and repeated her order, barking at the Trolls to stand down. The battle hungry Trolls eased off on the cannons, visibly reluctant. But their reluctance quickly vanished at Theron’s next order.
"Charge the island! Board! Kill anything that moves! Bring me their shard, and take control of their island!"
Roar!!!
The Trolls leapt directly into the smoke covered island, eager and frenzied. Their race was one of the more "animalistic" races among the humanoid races of this competition, and this translated into their battle style and the kind of classes they’d gained.
For one, their perception was very high, so even with the smoke, there was no issue. All four Trolls dove straight into the enemy island without hesitation, heading specifically in the direction where they sensed the most dense essence signatures from.
Watching them disappear into the smoke, Lyra remained unperturbed. This was standard. By her estimates, she put this island as one belonging to the lowly human race, or even worse, the Half-Elf Half-Humans — a race Elves like her looked down on with even more scorn than humans themselves.
A minute passed, and Lyra’s attention was finally directed at the enemy island. She’d been watching passively, lost in her thoughts, but now she no longer heard the roars of the Trolls.
What’s going on? she thought, the beginnings of a frown forming on her face. She glanced at Theron, who also had a frown on his face.
"Maybe the enemy is proving a bit difficult?" Theron said. "But among the lesser races, the Trolls are the strongest. They should be able to deal with it... I think..."
This spineless coward. Lyra rolled her eyes. He can’t even be confident in his underlings.
Lyra was also curious as to what was happening within that smoke-filled island, but unlike Theron, who was beginning to doubt, she felt a hundred percent confident that the Trolls would come out on top.
Right on cue, a pulse of essence, powerful and rapidly rising, began emanating from an area close to the center of the enemy island.
"Haha! It seems the Trolls succeeded!" Theron said, a relieved chuckle escaping his lips.
Lyra was the same. An amused, non-committal smile colored her face. This was a no-tension situation. The Trolls were always going to win. That deep pulse of essence was exactly what happened whenever an enemy island’s shard was being claimed.
"It was even faster than I expected," Lyra said, already retreating to continue her meditation. The essence close to their Race Shard was extremely dense — an opportunity she didn’t want to waste.
Before she could take a few steps, though, she froze.
That’s odd. Shouldn’t the pulse have grown weaker by now?
Turning back sharply, her gaze locked onto Theron in surprise.
"Is something wrong with my senses, or is the essence signature at the center of that island rising like a—"
"Get down Lyra!"
Theron’s body slammed suddenly into Lyra’s, knocking the wind out of her chest. Her anger began to flare immediately, but in an instant, it was doused like a flame splashed with a bucket of water.
Above them, directly at the spot where her head had been just a second before, a terrifying beam of pure, hair-raising electromagnetic energy crackled past.
Lyra seemed to have sensed something speed along its path, but she couldn’t be sure. That only made her fear deepen. If whatever projectile this violent beam of energy had carried had struck her head, she wasn’t confident she would’ve survived it — no, she definitely wouldn’t have survived it at all!
Lyra had barely processed her near death experience when her eyes suddenly picked up a trace of something blur past them.
Alarm bells rang in her head immediately.
"Theron! Our shard!!"
Theron was up before she finished speaking. He roared, the full might of the Dragonkin bloodline in him flaring madly.
Lyra shot to her feet too, her head whipping back toward their shard.
A young man was there, his back turned toward them as if they didn’t exist at all. With his bare hands, he pulled their shard out of its hovering position, a deep pulse of essence spreading out in the process.
"A human?!" Lyra hissed, barely believing her eyes. She watched as the young man casually turned, tossing the shard up in his hands repeatedly as if to feel the weight of it.
"Huh? It’s actually lighter than I thought," he said, then looked up at Lyra and Theron. "An elf and a... Half-Dragonkin Half-Elf, I guess?"
He’d barely finished his words when Theron suddenly moved, blurring across the short distance like a death god.
"Die!"
No! Something’s off, Lyra thought in alarm as she watched the next second unfold.
Theron descended on the human, but to Lyra’s surprise, there wasn’t the slightest bit of fear in the young man’s eyes. In fact, he looked amused, a light smirk playing on his lips.
"Theron be careful—!"
