Chapter 730: Hidden Massive Cave
Sol moved like a phantom through the sunless depths of the Shadow-Gorged Ravine.
For over two hours, the quiet floor of the rift had served as his personal slaughterhouse.
He had moved from one territorial boundary to the next with terrifying precision, executing apex beasts, draining their dense souls, and feeding the insatiable hunger of the ancient compass slumbering deep within his mind.
Yet, as he crested a high, moss-covered ridge overlooking the western span of the gorge, the surrounding jungle fell into an eerie, unnatural quiet.
Sol came to a halt, resting one hand on the leather-bound hilt of the Dreadwing blade. His neon-crimson eyes narrowed as he expanded his senses outward, casting a wide net of perception across the surrounding tree line.
But... there was nothing.
The heavy, suffocating aura of fear that had accompanied his earlier massacres had rolled through the valley like an invisible shockwave.
The remaining high-tier predators had not stayed behind to test their luck.
The smarter ones had scattered, diving into subterranean burrows or fleeing far beyond the perimeter of the ravine, while the weaker beasts had hunkered down into silent, paralyzed hibernation beneath the mud.
Sol let out a low, gravelly sigh, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked toward the jagged, cloud-shrouded peaks rising to the far south.
He could, of course, push deeper.
Deep in the Great Orrath lay the deep, forbidden wilderness... an untamed abyss of ancient forests and primordial rifts where the ambient essence was so thick it distorted the air, and where legendary, mutated monstrosities equivalent to Peak Layer 4 and beyond roamed unchecked.
If he ventured into those sunless expanses, he would undoubtedly find a higher concentration of dense, high-tier souls to feed Orphos.
However, Sol dismissed the thought almost as quickly as it crossed his mind.
Glancing back over his shoulder toward the distant, unseen palisades of the Veynar compound, Sol shook his head. Venturing blindly into the untamed abyss of the deep wilderness was an inefficient gamble.
The hazards there were unknown, the terrain was treacherous, and hunting ancient horrors in their home territory would consume too much time and energy.
More importantly, he had no intention of abandoning his timeline.
His ultimate goal in this world was not to spend months waging a solitary war against the wild horrors of the Great Orrth. His primary objective was to fully restore Orphos, repair its origin compass, and open the long-awaited pathway back toward his true home tribe... Ossuaria.
It had been a long time since he had been pulled away from his original lands. While he had forged an unbreakable foothold here beside Veylara, crowned her as the sovereign of the Fifth Layer, and brought the entire northern basin under the Veynar banner, the memory of Ossuaria, his roots, and the unfinished path awaiting him there still burned steadily in his mind.
He needed to fix the compass efficiently, safely, and without dragging himself into an endless, exhausting war with the deeper horrors before he was ready to make his move.
"No point running into the deep sectors just yet," Sol muttered to himself, his voice a low, raspy rumble against the quiet rustle of the leaves.
"Orphos needs quality souls, but throwing myself into a nest of ancient abominations when the Veynar are still consolidating the basin is just bad planning."
Just as he turned to begin his return sweep toward the upper trails, his crimson eyes caught a subtle, flickering anomaly at the base of a towering, black-slate cliff face fifty paces to his left.
The cliff wall was covered in thick, curtain-like drapes of weeping purple moss and thorny vines. Yet, near the absolute base, right where the slate met the damp riverbed, the dense vegetation twitched continuously.
A faint, frigid breeze was blowing outward from behind the vines, carrying with it a distinct, pungent aroma... a damp, mineral-heavy draft mixed with the bitter, sharp tang of concentrated subterranean essence.
Sol raised an eyebrow, stepping closer.
He reached out with his bare hand, shoving the heavy curtain of vines aside.
Hidden behind the foliage was a yawning, jagged fissure in the slate wall... a massive cave entrance easily thirty feet wide and tall enough to swallow a house.
The dark opening sloped sharply downward into the belly of the world, plunging into an absolute, pitch-black abyss.
Sol stood at the threshold, his senses probing the cold draft emerging from the dark.
Unlike the surface jungle, where the ambient essence was scattered by the wind and sun, the air flowing out of this cavern was heavy, thick, and surprisingly dense.
It tasted like cold, stagnant well-water, vibrating with a subtle, rhythmic pulse that signaled the presence of life deep within the subterranean rock.
A slow, dark grin curled the corners of Sol’s lips.
"Well now," Sol drawled softly, adjusting the strap of his sword belt. "Looks like I don’t need to head deep after all."
Without a second thought, Sol stepped through the fissure, leaving the dim twilight of the surface world behind as he melted into the cold darkness of the cave.
Within twenty paces, the narrow fissure expanded dramatically, opening up into a colossal, cathedral-like underground cavern network.
The temperature dropped significantly, the humid heat of the jungle replaced by a crisp, heavy chill that clung to the damp stone walls.
Yet, despite stepping into the belly of the mountain, the cave was not plunged into total, blinding darkness.
High above, hanging from the vast, arching ceilings hundreds of feet overhead, were vast clusters of natural bioluminescent organisms.
Glowing azure fungi, weeping tendrils of pale white moss, and glittering colonies of star-like crystal lichens clung to the jagged stalactites, shedding a soft, ethereal blue-and-silver radiance over the subterranean landscape.
Sol paused on a wide stone ledge, looking up at the ceiling in mild awe.
It looked as though a segment of the night sky had been torn down and suspended deep beneath the world. Millions of tiny, glowing organisms flickered in rhythmic unison, creating an artificial, starry canopy that cast long, swaying shadows across the vast stone floor below.
"Not a bad view, much better than the fake starry skies in those Roll something cars," Sol murmured, his boots making a soft, crunching sound against the stone as he resumed his descent.
