Chapter 742 Back In The Tribe

  • Next Chapter

Sol moved like a phantom through the shadows of the southern gate, his shoes striking the damp, packed ground without a sound.

The guards stationed atop the watchtowers offered quick, fervent salutes, their fists thumping against their chests in silent reverence as the Supreme Spear passed beneath the heavy ironwood gate. Sol offered a lazy, half-flick of his wrist in response, and went in.

The heavy wooden gates of the Veynar palisade swung shut behind Sol with a dull, echoing thud, cutting off the vast, silent wilderness of the Great Orrath.

Stepping into the settlement felt like walking into a different world entirely.

Where the forest outside was cold, dark, and drenched in the ancient stillness of midnight, the Veynar compound breathed with the warm, vibrant life of a newly crowned power.

Torches flickered along the raised walkways, casting long, dancing shadows across the smooth paths. The scent of damp pine and wild earth was replaced by the rich, intoxicating aroma of roasting meats, broths, and the sharp, sweet tang of fermented berry juice.

From the lower squares, the muffled chants of off-duty warriors and the boisterous laughter of hunters echoed. Even in the dead of night, the vitalization of the tribe showed no signs of slowing down.

Sol strolled casually along the central thoroughfare, the Dreadwing blade resting comfortably against his hip. He moved with an easy, unhurried stride, his now crimson eyes casually taking in the quiet night-watch.

Every squad of guards he passed snapped their fists to their chests in sharp, disciplined salutes, their eyes shining with a mixture of reverent dread and fierce pride.

Sol merely offered them a lazy, approving nod before continuing up the sloping path toward the upper ring where the Feline Spire rose against the starry sky.

As he neared the path leading to his own quarters, his crimson eyes caught a familiar, slender silhouette sitting on a low wooden bench beneath the flickering light of a resin torch.

It was Kira.

Whether it was by sheer coincidence or an intentional, quiet wait, the girl was leaning over a small cedar table, her dark hair bound in a loose braid that draped over her shoulder.

Her bone daggers lay flat beside her thighs, and despite the late hour, her dark eyes were fixed intently on a small wooden tablet, her brow furrowed in deep, youthful concentration as she made her final tally marks for the night.

The faint moonlight caught the soft, high curve of her cheekbones, highlighting the exhausted yet proud line of her shoulders.

Hearing the faint crunch of gravel, Kira lifted her head. The moment her eyes landed on his broad frame... lit by the amber torchlight... the tight crease between her brows melted away completely, replaced by a soft, radiant smile that lit up her entire face.

"You’re back," Kira said softly, setting the charcoal stick down onto the table.

"Just got back," Sol replied, his voice a low, gravelly rumble as he stepped onto the stone terrace and stopped beside her bench.

Kira looked him up and down, her gaze lingering on his spotless jerkin and the relaxed posture he held. "How did the hunt go? Zeyra came back hours ago looking like she’d been dragged through a swamp, but you stayed out past moonrise."

She knew that even with the war won and the celebrations in full swing, Sol still had the habit of going out into the deep woods almost every single day to hone his skills and keep his instincts sharp.

While the rest of the clan spent their evenings drinking brew and boasting around the fire-pits, he was out there in the dark, refining his edge.

To Kira, whose entire life had been defined by the harsh, uncompromising demands of tribal survival, his relentless diligence was something she deeply admired.

It was the mark of a true warrior... a man who never allowed his blade to dull, no matter how high he stood above the rest of the world.

"It was fine," Sol answered with a lazy shrug, keeping his voice light and unbothered. "The high-layer beasts in the immediate vicinity have been thinned out pretty thoroughly over the past few days. So I had to push a bit deeper into the jungle to find anything worth my time. Wasted a bit of time tracking."

He kept his tone light and entirely offhand, deliberately omitting any mention of the subterranean fissure or the massive colony of Giant Cave Centipedes resting in the abyssal sinkhole.

First of all, that entire underground sinkhole was his personal, private soul-farm. Every single Layer 3 and Layer 4 centipede squirming in that dark pit was prime fuel for Orphos, and he intended to harvest every last one of those high-density souls for himself to open the gate back to Ossuaria.

Secondly, telling Kira about a massive, venomous colony of forty-foot horrors nesting just a couple of leagues from the tribe would only cause her unnecessary worry.

The tribe was currently in a vital, delicate phase of consolidating three conquered territories and absorbing tributary clans.

Bringing news of an underground horror would send Elder Bran and the council into a panicked frenzy of perimeter fortification.

And she was already working herself to the bone managing the conquered tribes and the hostage quarters; adding the existential anxiety of an underground bug hive to her shoulders was completely pointless... especially when he planned on systematically exterminating every last centipede himself over the coming suns anyway.

What she didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her, and what he killed wouldn’t threaten her.

Kira nodded in understanding, her eyes softening with genuine care, holding a touch of earnest concern. She reached out, her fingers lightly catching the edge of his sleeve.

"The deep woods are unpredictable, Sol. Even for someone like you, it’s better to be careful. The deep woods don’t care how strong a warrior is if an ancient terror catches them unawares."

"I’m always careful," Sol chuckled softly, his crimson eyes gleaming with quiet warmth. "You know me."

"I do," she whispered, her voice dropping into a gentle, intimate tone.
