From Broken Family to Life Winner: A Reborn Mother's Journey
Chapter 680 - 679: Wailing
After hearing Su Li’s words, Li Xian was too ashamed to look at Wu Sheng’s face, and he hardly knew how he made it out of the hospital room.
Li Xian’s face was bleak as he left, looking utterly crestfallen.
By the time Ye Xilan’s call brought him back to his senses, Li Xian was already inside her hospital room.
Ye Xilan couldn’t move her hands or feet. She lay stiffly on the hospital bed, her face covered in a cold sweat from the pain. At the sound of Li Xian’s return, she desperately tried to lift her head to read his expression.
Li Xian’s expression was grim, and Ye Xilan’s heart sank.
"Honey, Old Li, how did it go? Did Wu Sheng agree?"
It was as if Li Xian hadn’t heard her. Ye Xilan raised her voice and called out to him again.
"What?" Li Xian snapped out of his trance and looked at Ye Xilan.
"Did Wu Sheng agree? Did that Su Li woman budge?" Ye Xilan asked nervously, sucking in a sharp breath.
Li Xian didn’t answer, but his grim expression and silence said it all.
The light in Ye Xilan’s eyes died. Her head fell back heavily. "I knew it. I knew it..."
"I knew that woman was ruthless. If she could personally send her own mother-in-law to prison, she wouldn’t go easy on me."
Ye Xilan tried desperately to remain civil, but in the end, she couldn’t stop herself from letting out a howl. "That vicious, heartless woman! How could she be so cruel? I’m already like this, and she still won’t let me go!"
Ye Xilan started screaming in pain, wailing.
"Owww, it’s killing me! The pain is killing me! Just let me die!"
The pain was real, and she truly couldn’t help but scream. She had been holding it in before, and now she had finally found an excuse to let it all out.
The most painful memories of Ye Xilan’s life had been inflicted by Wu Qihua and her son, Wu Sheng. The last incident with Wu Qihua had left her with psychological scars, and now Wu Sheng had come to add to them.
"How could Wu Sheng be so ruthless? To do this to me... I’m going to die from the pain! How could he be so heartless? Doesn’t he know how much I care about him?"
Ye Xilan cried as she shouted, hurt and heartbroken.
"Old Li, he’s your son! You have to convince him not to press charges against me. Otherwise, I won’t let him off the hook either! Look at what he did to me!"
"How could he be so ruthless, so heartless? It’s one thing to hurt me like this, but now he wants to have me arrested? I’m already in this state, in this much pain..."
Li Xian looked at the cold sweat on Ye Xilan’s face. He knew, of course, that she was in agony.
That Wu Sheng would attack Ye Xilan and Mrs. Tang was both beyond Li Xian’s expectations and, at the same time, not surprising at all.
Li Xian looked at the wailing Ye Xilan with a complex expression, as if looking at a stranger.
Sensing something was wrong, Ye Xilan saw the look in his eyes and inwardly flinched. Her expression immediately shifted to one of pleading.
"Honey, I was wrong. Please, save me. It hurts. The pain is killing me."
"Honey, I was wrong. Please forgive me. I’ll never do it again."
Hearing Ye Xilan’s apologies, Li Xian squeezed his eyes shut. The words of Su Li and Wu Sheng flashed through his mind. His face twisted in anguish as he asked in a hoarse voice,
"Why did you do it? I warned you several times not to interfere with Wu Sheng’s marriage. You promised me. Why did you do something like this?"
Li Xian squeezed his eyes shut. "I never imagined you would do something like this. At first, I was even wary of Su Li... Why? Why did you do it? Didn’t I tell you before that I thought Su Li was a good person?"
Li Xian’s anguished questions made Ye Xilan’s face turn deathly pale.
"I... I didn’t want this to happen either. Su Li forced my hand! I’ve said it before, she’s not good enough for Wu Sheng, but she just wouldn’t listen! She kept clinging to him, and nothing could pry her away!"
Ye Xilan’s voice was stark. "It looked like she was going to latch onto him for life. How could I just stand by and watch?"
Li Xian stared at Ye Xilan’s face, unable to hide the astonishment on his own.
"Why would you think that way? Su Li and Wu Sheng are a good match. Su Li is wonderful—she has a good job, she’s a good person, and Wu Sheng likes her..."
Ye Xilan cut him off.
Ye Xilan had been desperately holding it all in, but the pain and her current predicament made her so agitated that she finally snapped.
"How is she good enough for Wu Sheng? Tell me how! She’s divorced, and she has a kid! How is she worthy of him? It’s her second marriage! Wu Sheng isn’t some widower, so why should he marry a divorced woman? I’m just looking out for him!"
"Honey, why can’t you understand where I’m coming from?" Ye Xilan argued fiercely with Li Xian, struggling to lift her head, her eyes red.
"That woman is rude and far too career-driven! All she cares about is being in the public eye. How could she possibly take care of a family? A woman like that is unacceptable!"
"Wu Sheng should marry a good, virtuous woman who can devote herself wholeheartedly to her family—someone who will stay home, bear children, and support her husband. But that woman? Look at her! Does she have any qualities of a good wife?!"
"If she were any good, her ex-husband wouldn’t have divorced her, would he? I mean, when have you ever seen a divorce that wasn’t because the wife was somehow inadequate?"
"One of Wu Sheng’s own subordinates couldn’t stand her and would rather get a divorce than be with her. So how could Wu Sheng possibly take her!"
"Look at that woman! She’s even busier than Wu Sheng! How are they supposed to have a family? How can they be happy? She’s got a terrible temper, too. And she’s fiercely protective of that little mute boy—you can’t say a single bad thing about him. He’s not even her real son, but she treats him so well. Who knows what shady business is going on there!"
Ye Xilan had become so agitated and was speaking so fast that her face flushed and she grew breathless. She finally paused, took a deep, ragged breath, and continued her tirade.
"How could anyone rest easy marrying a woman like that? If they get married and have their own children, who knows what she’ll do."
"Think about Wu Sheng’s standing! Why should he be so eager to become a stepfather? Being a step-parent is the hardest thing in the world. Besides, you can tell that kid is trouble just by looking at him. He’s already so old, it would be impossible to form a bond. He’d just be raising an ungrateful brat!"
"That woman is out showing her face all day, doting on her son. Wu Sheng will come home exhausted from work every day to a cold house, with no hot meal, completely neglected. How is that any way to live? He’ll end up having to take care of *her*..."
Ye Xilan couldn’t continue, but her point was finally crystal clear.
No longer paying any attention to Li Xian’s expression, Ye Xilan spoke until she was overcome by her own sorrow.
"I consider his well-being in everything. I treat him like my own son, always thinking about what’s best for him. I only did this impulsive thing because he wouldn’t listen to reason. But in the end, wasn’t it all for him?"
"I treat him like my own flesh and blood, but what about him? How does he treat me? Am I his mortal enemy? How could he be so vicious, so ruthless!"
Ye Xilan broke down, wailing. "It hurts! It hurts so much! When I saw the murderous look in his eyes, the way he looked like he wanted to eat me alive, that’s when I realized what a fool I’ve been."
"What son? It’s all fake, all of it!"
"I never intended to take Su Li’s life, but he wants to take mine! Ahhh..."
With a loud WAAAH, Ye Xilan broke down completely, her sobs filled with misery.
Her heart-rending cries plunged Li Xian into deep anguish.
Years ago, after they lost their child, Ye Xilan had wailed just like this in a hospital room.
For countless days and nights afterward, he could hear Ye Xilan’s soft, choked sobs.
The only sounds left in the hospital room were Ye Xilan’s agonized cries and the sight of Li Xian’s increasingly pained, hunched-over back.
