From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 787 - 787: The Cart Was Not A Favor
The thin paper opened into a service hall where the lights had been changed one bulb at a time.
Three were white. Two were yellow. One flickered whenever the cart wheel squealed, like the ceiling had decided to complain only when something already sounded broken.
Ty stood behind the old cart with both hands on the padded handle. The towel around the metal had gone stiff from old cleaner. It rasped against his palm bone when the memory tried to make him push.
The warning slip stayed pinned to his chest.
HALF RELEASE HANDLER.
RETURN TO STORAGE DUTY ONLY.
Zunoder stood beside the cart in Ty's old body, dry and clean inside a memory that smelled like mop water. "This is better for me."
JJ kept her ledger folded against her ribs. "You always say that before something bites you."
"Repeated correction. Repeated return. Repeated task. This is how functions are proven."
The voice called from the far end of the hall.
"Half boy?"
It was the same porter.
Younger Ty stopped pushing, and present Ty felt the stop through his arms. The cart carried sealed trays, an empty pitcher, and a file box with no lid. The box had been turned sideways so its labels faced the wall.
That was new.
Someone had used two strips of tape to keep the box facing that way. One strip had peeled loose and stuck to the cart rail. The second held because a thumb had pressed the end down hard enough to leave a dirty oval.
Care, or panic.
Mercy made those look the same when people were tired.
Heissman stepped closer. "Someone learned from the first incident."
Omina studied the box without touching it. "Or someone feared another write-up."
"Both can be true."
The porter appeared at the end of the hall with one hand pressed against a supply-room door. Their badge changed too quickly for a name to settle, but the initials M.R. sat wrong on every version.
They saw younger Ty and looked relieved before the face remembered to be annoyed.
"Where were you?"
Younger Ty looked down at the warning slip on his chest. "Storage."
"Then get over here."
JJ marked it as work. The service hall accepted the line too quickly.
The porter jerked their chin toward the supply door. "Cart in front. Block the line."
"What line?"
The door shook. Something on the other side hit it once, then dragged down the metal. The memory kept the sound unclear. A patient cart, a cabinet, a person. The uncertainty made the hallway feel smaller.
The porter swallowed. "Inspection team came early. Room 214 transfer list is in there. It has a shield name on top."
Mara made a small sound on the shelter feed. Rose's hand moved between her and the tablet.
Mara shook her head once. "I can hear this part."
The porter saw younger Ty still standing there and snapped, "Move."
Younger Ty shoved the cart forward. The bad wheel caught a cracked tile and kicked sideways. The file box slid. Present Ty felt his shoulder lean to correct it, the way a body saves a falling object before thought has time to ask if the object deserves saving.
The cart slammed in front of the supply door.
The thing behind it hit again.
The cart jumped into younger Ty's hip. The porter pressed both hands to the door above the cart and said, "Hold it there."
"You said block the line."
"Now I am saying hold it."
JJ's pencil hovered over the help line. It flickered and failed.
Zunoder looked at the blank space. "They asked for a task."
The cart struck Ty again. The old body in the memory was too thin to take it cleanly. The handle caught under his ribs and drove him back a step. The warning slip tore at one corner.
"Hold it," the porter said again.
Their voice cracked on the second word.
JJ wrote around the failure instead of pretending it had become clean.
CALLED FOR WORK.
TASK BECAME DANGER.
Omina nodded. "Closer."
Erebos wrote on the supply door:
NOT ENOUGH.
Two people entered the far end of the hall. Inspection coats. Clean shoes. Clipboards held high enough to stay dry.
The porter lowered their voice. "Please."
The word came late. It came after the order, after the correction, after the warning slip, after making Bone Half the thing between the door and the hallway.
Ty heard it anyway.
Younger Ty put his shoulder behind the cart. The bad wheel turned inward and trapped the torn warning slip under the frame. The supply door hit again. Something small slid under the gap and stopped against his foot.
A bracelet.
Paper.
No printed name visible. Only a room number.
214.
Younger Ty kicked it under the cart with the heel of his foot.
The inspectors walked past. One glanced at the cart and asked why it was there.
The porter answered too fast. "Storage transfer."
The inspector pointed at Ty. "That thing?"
The porter held the door with shaking hands. Younger Ty kept his shoulder in the handle.
"Yes," the porter said. "That thing."
The words went into the hall like old nails. JJ's grip tightened around the ledger, but Ty made her write them anyway. He said it once, then again when she tried to soften him with his name.
She wrote:
DEHUMANIZING CALL.
PROTECTIVE RESULT.
Zunoder clapped once with the old body's hands. "Thank you. Dehumanizing call proves my point cleanly."
Omina kept her eyes on the cart. "It proves the call was dirty."
"It proves he was useful as an object."
The inspectors left. The porter stayed against the door until their knees started to bend, and the sound behind the supply-room door stopped. The memory let the cart roll back half an inch.
Younger Ty caught it before the bracelet showed.
The porter looked down and saw the motion. For the first time, their eyes went to younger Ty's face before his warning slip.
"You saw that?"
Younger Ty kept the cart steady. "Yes."
"And you hid it."
"Yes. It was showing where people could see the room."
The porter closed their mouth around several answers and settled for the one that kept the cart moving. "Then fine."
The hallway tried to file that as approval.
Ty pushed the line back with both hands. "No. That was relief."
The route changed the entry.
RELIEF AFTER PROTECTION.
PRAISE UNCONFIRMED.
Zunoder accepted it too easily. "Relief after a tool works."
The cart wheel squealed again, and the service hall opened farther around the hidden bracelet.
