Chapter 791 - 791: The Person Who Changed The Call

  • Next Chapter

The laugh reached Ty before the memory gave him the stairs.

It came down through a staff stairwell with chipped green paint on the rail and a paper sign taped over the door window. The sign said authorized floor use only. One corner had peeled loose, so anyone on the landing could still see the slice of hall outside.

Younger Ty stood on the lower landing with the B.H. badge hidden under his sleeve. Above him, two workers leaned over the rail. The one with a bent paperclip between their fingers had the tired confidence of someone who knew which chores could be pushed downhill. The other carried a tray with three sealed cups and kept one shoulder turned away from the leaking pipe above the door.

"B.H.," the paperclip worker called, and the letters came with a laugh meant for the other worker more than for Ty.

JJ marked the call as dirty before Zunoder could polish it. Omina did not correct her. She watched the worker's hand, not the badge.

The worker pointed with the paperclip toward a crate beside the landing. "Take that down to Records overflow."

Younger Ty looked at the crate first. It had no handles, and the bottom corner had gone dark. He bent close enough to see wetness gather along the seam. "It is leaking."

"Then move faster," the tray worker said.

The paperclip worker tapped the rail. "It is sealed. Do not open it, do not ask Records why it is wet, and do not leave it here for day shift to blame me."

The errand had its old shape around it. Bad box, bad timing, name hidden under a sleeve until someone needed a pair of hands that would not make a complaint. Younger Ty lifted it anyway, and present Ty felt the crate edge bite into the skin under his thumb as the memory settled into his palm.

He carried it down one step, then another. The bottom sagged with each movement. Something inside slid against cardboard with a soft wet drag that made the worker above him click their tongue.

"Careful."

Annoyed, not worried.

Younger Ty stopped to shift the weight against his thigh. "It is leaking on the stairs."

"Hold it level."

JJ wrote the first finding as a pair of ugly working notes. Utility call. Careless handling. She left the ink rough, as if making it neat would help the wrong side.

The tray worker started down past him, one hand on the rail and the tray balanced against their hip. Their shoe hit the wet step. The slip was not graceful. Their knee struck the stair edge, one cup cracked against the wall, and another rolled toward the open gap between the steps.

The laugh cut off. The paperclip worker leaned over the rail with their hand empty now, the paperclip forgotten on the floor. "Mavi?"

The name changed the landing. Mavi clung to the rail with one foot half off the step, the tray caught on two fingers, the last cup rolling under their elbow.

Younger Ty set the crate against the wall. The worker above snapped, "Do not drop that," then saw Mavi's hand slipping and choked the rest back.

"B.H., wait."

Same letters. No laugh.

Ty moved before the route could turn it into a clean category. Younger Ty drove the crate tighter to the wall with one hip, reached up, and caught Mavi by the elbow. His other hand trapped the tray before it fell, and his foot stopped the cup against the stair edge. The weight hit him badly. The crate leaked under his knee. His cut opened wider against the cardboard.

"I have you," younger Ty said.

Mavi grabbed the rail with both hands and sat down hard on the step. The paperclip worker came down two stairs, reached for Mavi, then stopped because Ty was still holding the elbow.

"Let go," they said, lower this time.

Younger Ty released Mavi and pulled his own hand back toward his sleeve. Ink ran between his fingers. The worker saw the wet cut and stared at it as if the hand had just become visible.

"You're cut."

Heissman spoke from the hall. "There. The call changed after the injury entered the caller's view."

Zunoder lifted one finger. "Responder is still role language. Rescue response to a utility accident does not create identity."

"It creates a witness to the hand doing the work," Omina said. "Keep going."

The worker glanced up the stairs, toward the door, toward whatever supervisor might come through it if the crate was found leaking in the wrong place. Their fear stayed practical. Their first worry was still their own job. Then they looked at Ty's hand again.

"It is fine," younger Ty said.

"It is leaking ink into the cut."

"Then the crate is leaking."

Mavi made a laugh through their teeth and pressed one hand to their ankle. "He really does answer like that."

"Shut up, Mavi," the worker said, but there was no heat in it. They pointed at Ty with the hand that had held the paperclip. "Stay there."

JJ started to mark the command under utility and stopped herself. The worker went up the stairs and returned with a paper towel, a strip of tape, and the sour look of someone spending pity they could not afford.

They held the towel out. "Take it before Records sees the crate."

Younger Ty looked at the towel too long, as if there might be a price written on the fold. Then he took it and wrapped the cut with clumsy pressure.

JJ wrote, limited care with self protective motive, and underlined limited once. Zunoder accepted the line too easily.

Omina caught the ease. "Motive does not erase the change. It tells us what kind of change it was."

The worker's eyes dropped to the badge hidden under Ty's sleeve. "You should not keep that visible."

"You gave it to me," younger Ty said.

"I know." The worker looked at the door window before answering the rest. "If I write the full thing, people laugh. If I write the old name, Records asks questions. If I write nothing, nobody comes."

Mavi kept both hands on their ankle and watched Ty tie the strip of tape with his teeth.

JJ wrote the next line with fewer capitals than the route wanted. B.H. used as shorthand to call someone who would come.

Zunoder leaned over the note. "Someone useful."

"Someone," JJ said.

The route resisted the word for a breath, then gave it limited weight.
