From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 799 - 799: The Witness Hurts Him
The witness asked for water, and nobody moved fast.
That helped. Fast made people look like they were buying the next answer.
Jade sent the request through text. Waddell passed it to the hospital-side relay. A nurse entered the witness room outside the camera path and placed a cup on the small table. Only the wrist stayed visible, bracelet turned inward against the skin.
Ty waited. Waiting felt worse now that the first origin had failed. The hallway had stopped pretending to be neutral, and every tile under his feet held one of Zunoder's words.
Conditioning. Hunger. Blame. Use.
All true enough to stand.
The witness set the cup down. "You asked when it changed for me."
JJ lifted her pencil. Omina spoke before the ledger could turn hungry.
"Only what you can answer within your limit."
"I know." The witness kept their hand around the cup. "It changed when I realized I could scare him into coming."
The line hit harder because the voice stayed steady. Ty looked down. JJ stopped writing. Zunoder went still, and that was how Ty knew he liked it.
"I never threatened him," the witness said. "I sounded scared. I was scared. But I learned it worked."
The route marked the admission as fear call effective. JJ snapped back into motion and demanded context before the line could become a clean weapon.
Heissman leaned over the page. "It is also accurate."
JJ glared at him until he added, "I am not endorsing it."
"Try hating it with your face," she said. He attempted something with his mouth, and she cut the experiment off before it became another problem.
Yun-Jin stayed quiet beside Ty. Her quiet had weight. It meant she was watching where the pressure wanted him to go.
The witness turned the cup. "After that, when something was wrong, people called like that. Some used the letters. Some used the tone. Make it urgent. Make it sound like somebody gets hurt. B.H. comes."
Ty felt the old hall open behind his teeth. Several memories answered at once: a dropped chart, a locked supply door, a patient too heavy for the wrong staff member to admit they needed help, a name said small because saying the full thing would make the caller feel cruel.
B.H. comes.
The phrase had been an instruction and a fact.
Zunoder stepped into it. "Purpose through trained fear response."
Omina answered with the same careful brutality she had used all night. Claimed by Zunoder, observed by caller, not confirmed as purpose.
"Caller observation is evidence," Zunoder said.
"Yes," Omina answered, and JJ muttered that they were killing her.
Omina kept her eyes on the record. "I am keeping bad evidence from becoming better evidence by mishandling it."
The witness's hand tightened around the cup. "I am sorry."
The words went toward Ty, but they had to pass through the hallway first. The hallway tried to turn them into relief. Ty refused the relief.
"For what part?" he asked.
Jade's text arrived at once. Ty.
Waddell added, careful.
Ty kept his eyes on the turned wrist. The witness answered after one controlled breath.
"For learning the sound that worked."
That was the right apology. It fixed nothing. It held the room in place.
JJ wrote it as caller learned fear tone produced response, apology specific. Zunoder read the line and nodded.
Zunoder said the specific apology strengthened the admission. Omina answered that it also kept the witness human, and when Zunoder reminded her that human witnesses still proved ugly facts, she let the yes stand.
The route accepted the ugly fact. Ty let the words settle.
He wanted to say he had known. He wanted to say it never worked unless he chose it. He wanted to say fear had not moved him, that he had moved because the person behind the fear mattered.
Some of that was true. Some of it was pride trying to clean a floor after blood had already dried.
He remembered one call where he had arrived angry enough to scare the person who called him. The sink had been clogged with red gauze. The patient had already been moved. The nurse who whispered B.H. had lied about how long the mess had been there, then cried when he found the medication bag behind the trash can.
Fear had brought him to the room. The bag had made him stay.
"Sometimes I came because the sound got me moving," Ty said.
Yun-Jin's hand opened and closed once at her side. JJ looked up.
Ty made himself finish. "Sometimes I understood later."
Zunoder's smile sharpened. Later mattered, even if the word looked small beside the hallway's big ones. Later was a storage closet after the call had ended. It was seeing the patient name turned inward and realizing the caller had been scared for a reason. Sometimes it was discovering that the cruel-sounding person had been covering someone else's mistake badly. Sometimes it was anger arriving too late to help and still changing how he remembered the work.
The route tried to make later into delayed purpose claim. JJ stopped it and wrote delayed understanding.
Omina supported her. "Purpose may form through action and later recognition. Claim remains under review."
Zunoder tapped the fear line. "Later recognition still follows my trigger."
Ty looked at him. "Yes."
JJ made a strangled sound.
Ty kept going. "A trigger can start the walk. It owns none of the steps after."
Yun-Jin's shoulders lowered by one fraction. That was the closest she came to approval in this place.
"Then purpose follows conditioning," Zunoder said.
"Sometimes," Ty said, and Zunoder thanked him as if the word had been gift-wrapped.
"Do not thank me. I am not making your whole argument."
Omina stepped in. "Subject admits response could begin under fear cue. Subject concedes no caller ownership over purpose."
The route entered the split: response trigger, caller fear. Purpose, unresolved.
Zunoder pointed to the first line. "Trigger shapes purpose."
Heissman spoke before Omina. "Trigger is not purpose. A fire alarm shapes movement. The next act still belongs to the person in motion."
JJ looked at him sideways. "Annoyingly clear."
The witness gave a small laugh. It hurt to hear because it carried no joy, only surprise that the room had not punished the sound.
Ty looked at the witness's wrist. "When did it change for me?"
The witness answered softly. "When you stopped asking what I needed and asked who got hurt if I was wrong."
The hallway tightened around a narrower test. Erebos separated caller need from responder purpose for review. Zunoder accepted it because the separation still left him room. Ty accepted it because room was better than a closed door.
The witness set the cup down. "I hurt your case."
Ty looked at the line about fear. "Yes."
The yes hurt the witness worse than comfort would have. Ty saw the wrist fold inward and let the hurt remain where it belonged.
Jade's text appeared with the only comfort the room could afford: truth with limits still counts. JJ added that truth still bills, and the route opened the next page with its demand for cost-bearing change after a coercive call pattern.
