Chapter 821 - 821: Supply Is Where People Disappear

  • Next Chapter

On paper, supply counted as reassignment.

That was how the line survived.

N. Vale had been sent to supply after the objection. The words sat under the override stamp, plain enough to pass through any office that preferred tidy staffing notes over consequences.

Heissman read the entry with his mouth tight.

"The paperwork would call that ordinary reassignment, not punishment."

JJ looked at him until he gave the room the version with blood in it.

"The event lost the person who objected to it."

Anika spoke from the shelter kitchen before Zunoder could polish that down.

"Supply keeps your hands and loses your mouth."

The drawer took her sentence so neatly that Ty saw her anger land before she said another word.

Waddell shifted closer to his mic.

"You can stop before it takes too much from you."

Anika kept both hands on the sink edge.

"I know exactly what it takes from me today."

Behind her, Tessa stacked bowls with the hard rhythm of someone doing three jobs while a fourth job talked through a tablet.

Anika kept going.

"Supply can keep a worker useful after an objection while the warning loses the hallway."

Omina recorded the sequence. N. Vale objected, then lost the support lane around the cart.

Zunoder stepped toward the drawer.

"Removal after objection gives you sequence, never retaliation by itself."

"Sequence gives us the next door to open."

The drawer accepted the ugly balance. Retaliation remained unproven. The removal sequence stood.

Ty let both pieces settle. Ugly pairs had begun to feel more honest than clean single lines. A clean line always seemed to have someone missing from it.

The supply lane opened as a shelf map. Rows of hospital stock rose in thin white lines, grouped by gloves, sheets, meal trays, disposable cups, tape rolls, wrist bands, and labels. The map had no smell, but Ty's mind added cardboard dust and old plastic.

Supply looked harmless because everything had a place. That was the trick. A person could be moved there and still look useful on a schedule. A missing worker became stocked shelves, filled bins, and signatures that proved she had kept working.

Ty understood why Anika's face had changed. Supply was a room people praised when nothing failed. Missing cartons got found before breakfast, and the finder stayed unnamed. A worker moved after speaking up could vanish into that order and still appear on every staffing sheet as present.

That was the part Ty hated. The staffing sheet could call her present while the hallway kept her quiet. Useful could still leave a person exposed. The shelf looked calm because all the panic had been folded into labels, and the labels had no room for why a worker had been moved.

Anika leaned closer to the feed.

"Third shelf on the left, if Mercy stocked it normally."

Waddell turned his head toward her.

"You still remember a hospital supply shelf from then."

"I remember where people sent me when I asked wrong."

The shelf map tightened. Tape and wrist bands sat near each other, the way Anika said they would when inventory was run by habit and hurry. Temporary bands. Blank release tags. Label rolls with torn cardboard on the corners.

Yun-Jin looked from the shelf to the yellow sheet.

"The body had no wrist tag when the cart moved."

Omina followed the line without reaching for the sealed name.

"And N. Vale was sent to the room where tags lived."

Zunoder answered with the old precision.

"The assignment happened after the transfer had already continued."

Anika's hands tightened on the sink.

"The assignment happened after she objected to the release."

The drawer entered the only fact both sides could use. N. Vale had access to identification supplies after removal from the cart route.

JJ's pencil slowed.

"That fact can cut us if we swing it badly."

It could. Zunoder's face eased because he had seen the same cut.

"If the orderly had access to supplies and no tag was restored, the absence remains."

Omina took her time. Ty respected her for that and hated the wait anyway.

Anika looked at the shelf map.

"That only works if she was allowed to take one."

The drawer waited. It had the patience of a locked cabinet.

Anika's throat moved.

"Supply rooms keep sign out sheets when supervisors care."

The map shifted toward the ledger rack. A sign out sheet existed, but opening it would extend the shelter's supply audit. Behind Anika, someone at the serving window made a tired sound that never became a complaint.

Jade stepped into frame before the cost could hide behind Anika.

"We make the kitchen pay only if the reason stays visible."

Anika turned toward her.

"If the sheet shows she tried to take a tag, it matters."

"If it cuts the other way, it still costs everyone here."

"Then everyone here deserves to see what they bought."

Jade looked past her to the line at the window. No one there had voted for a trial. No one had agreed to become the cost of an old hospital's missing tag. They were still there, waiting with empty hands while the room asked another question.

The woman with the child from the soup line appeared at the edge of the feed. She had heard enough.

"Check the shelves, because hungry people can still count."

Jade turned to her, face hard in the protective way.

"The room has no claim on your patience."

The woman lifted one shoulder.

"Then write that I am annoyed and waiting."

The drawer tried to give the woman's statement public weight. Omina cut it down before Jade had to argue again. One recipient's patience carried only individual weight. The shelter delay remained active.

The woman looked at the captions and snorted.

"Good, because I refuse to become useful paperwork today."

Anika smiled for the length of one breath, then returned to the shelf map.

"Supply audit extends, and the reason stays visible."

The sign out sheet opened.

N. Vale had signed for one temporary wrist band at 23:22. The reason column read lower hold correction.

Ty stared at the words until they threatened to become too clean.

Lower hold correction.

The column offered a smaller word than rescue. A worker had seen something wrong enough to take a band after being moved away from the cart.

Omina pressed her hilt down.

"Keep the correction language exactly where it appears."

The drawer resisted until Zunoder stepped in.

"Correction for which error, if you want that word to carry weight?"

"That question is why the word matters here."

He smiled.

"Questions become traps when you dress them as findings."

Omina kept her anger out of her voice.

"A correction entry means someone recorded an error."

The drawer accepted the narrow shape. A temporary wrist band had been signed out after the objection, for lower hold correction.

JJ wrote so fast her pencil scratched.

"Track whether the temporary band reached the transfer record."

The sign out sheet folded into the arrival record. The temporary band had not been found when the transfer arrived.

Anika's shoulders dropped a fraction. The kitchen behind her kept moving because she had trained it to move without waiting for her face. Tessa called for bowls while rinse water slapped metal and the line at the window shifted, irritated but still fed.

The file kept trying to turn every cost into a heroic pose. This one was plain work continuing while a bad answer entered the board.

Zunoder took the line at once.

"The correction attempt failed before it reached the cart."

Yun-Jin's eyes stayed on the arrival record.

"Or someone stopped it before the cart could carry it."

The drawer would go no further. Failed or interrupted was the only wording it would allow.

Ty felt the old pull again. No tag. Tag requested. Tag missing. Every attempt became a gap someone else could spend.

The shelf map showed one more entry under N. Vale's signature. One roll of yellow tape. The reason was bin latch.

Anika looked toward the linen bin on the drawer map.

"That tape matches the latch work near the linen bin."

The damaged cart had stopped by that bin. The yellow sheet had been hidden under linen. The tape had gone to the latch.

Omina's eyes narrowed.

"N. Vale may have put the hold sheet in the supply path."

Zunoder accepted the thin word because it helped him.

"May have is doing most of the work there."

JJ's pencil paused.

"May have is still better than your empty no one."

The shelf map closed. A new line waited under it, smaller than the others.

The supply camera log existed only in pieces.
