From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals

Chapter 826 - 826: The Sound Belongs To A Door

Lost Property made JJ sit back before the drawer opened it.

She had hated that room since the first time its name appeared, and Ty understood why. Lost Property sounded like coats, umbrellas, and lunch tins. Here, it meant anything the office had failed to bury as a person.

Omina kept the drawer closed while she set the limits.

"Caller metadata only, storage path, no identity today."

The drawer accepted the limit, then gave them the reason it wanted the cross-reference. The response hold had stored a distress flag in a nonstandard container.

Caelin's aide read the storage note from his side feed.

"Old archive systems used container language for storage."

Heissman shook his head.

"They were never supposed to use it for response calls."

JJ looked at him.

"Then what kind of thing took container language?"

Heissman took too long to answer. His silence gave Ty the shape before his mouth did.

"Things the office routed more easily as objects."

Omina wrote that down without letting the drawer own the phrasing.

"Caller remained a person; distress flag entered property route."

The drawer resisted. Ty felt the cost move through the boot mark, a thin pull up his leg. He stayed where he was and let the distinction take what it needed.

Zunoder watched the mark instead of the line.

"Every distinction costs the subject more weight here."

Yun-Jin answered without looking at him.

"Then the office should have needed fewer lies."

The drawer opened the index after that, giving them categories instead of a room. The column held unreturned tags, unclaimed effects, unassigned remains, and sealed containers in the same neat stack. A missing wrist band and a body part had been made into one kind of housekeeping problem.

Ty hated the neatness more than the old labels. Neatness was how the office survived its own cruelty. Put a tag, a blanket, a shoe, and a piece of someone into the same inventory shape, and the hand that moved them never had to slow down. The index had learned to make disgust look like order.

Jade's voice came through the shelter feed with less patience than usual.

"Search the caller path and keep the rest closed."

Omina narrowed the review to the distress flag. The metadata folded into route marks, then into a time stamp Ty had already learned to dislike.

The response hold had failed human assignment at 2331. After that, the system requested a container match.

Mara had both palms flat on the shelter table.

"Failed human assignment can mean no name attached."

Zunoder added the other blade.

"It can also mean the system declined one."

Omina allowed both possibilities because the record had earned neither trust nor mercy. The drawer searched three item numbers that vanished as quickly as they appeared. A tag. A blanket. A pair of shoes with no photo.

Then the fourth line stayed where everyone could read it.

Sealed container. Door kept sound.

JJ read it twice.

"Door kept sound is not a normal label."

Heissman covered his mouth, then dropped his hand when Omina looked at him.

"It is old soul storage language from Mercy."

Ty felt the phrase before he had any clean thought about it. Some part of him knew the shape of a door used as a lock for a voice. That part came from somewhere older than the cart and meaner than the boot mark. It belonged to the old title waiting for someone to make the wrong request.

The title did nothing dramatic inside him. That made it worse. It sat still, patient, like a key already aware of its lock. Ty had learned to distrust anything in him that waited politely.

Omina noticed the change in him and moved half a step closer to the drawer.

"Identify the source before anyone asks the door."

Heissman kept his eyes on the item label.

"Unstable sound could be tied to a threshold."

He rubbed one hand over his mouth.

"The door kept the sound from spreading until authority opened it."

Jade kept the ugly wording.

"The distress flag was locked in a door."

The drawer accepted the summary. Caller distress flag stored as door-kept sound.

Ty asked the question the room had been walking toward.

"Which door held the caller's sound in storage?"

The search took long enough for Zunoder's calm to become satisfaction. Ty opened his right hand and made himself leave it open. If he clenched it, the drawer would have another reaction to weigh.

The answer arrived as a partial item label.

Demon King Soul Door.

Caelin's office feed lost sound while three people began talking at once on his side. At the shelter, Mara's face changed in a way Ty refused to name because naming it would take something from her. Rose shifted closer to her side of the tape and stopped there.

JJ's pencil stopped moving. Heissman stared at the label like a teacher seeing a word from an old banned lesson crawl back onto the board. Yun-Jin moved her foot near the boot mark and left it there, a warning and an offer in the same inch of floor.

Ty kept his hand open. The name on the label wanted a fist. It wanted a clean reaction the file could weigh and Zunoder could point at. He gave it his palm instead, fingers aching from the effort of staying loose.

Omina put herself between Ty and the drawer.

"Give item status before claim value enters record."

The item was sealed.

Zunoder stepped in before anyone could feel relieved.

"The caller's distress may be the proof he needs."

Omina kept the hilt low.

"It may also be a trap carrying proof."

The drawer offered the useful version, evidence available if the item woke, and usefulness did the arguing.

Mara spoke from the shelter, quieter than before.

"Waking that door gives it a reason to answer."

Ty looked at her.

"You know stories about this door already, Mara."

"Stories lie, but doors keep records longer anyway."

Mara's hands stayed flat on the table after she said it. Rose watched the hands, not the face. Whatever story Mara knew had survived in the body first, which made Ty trust it more and hate needing it more.

Zunoder turned her fear into an argument.

"The door could overpower the Name route entirely."

Omina answered before the room could start wanting that.

"You want the title to answer where the person refuses."

The drawer supplied a cleaner version. Title access might increase claim power.

Ty hated the phrase because it sounded like help. The problem had never been a shortage of power. The problem was everyone who saw power and forgot the person forced to carry it.

He read the warning twice. Do not wake without administrative need.

Administrative need sounded harmless until Ty set it beside the office's other clean phrases, the emergency routing, the deferred consent, the purpose assignment that had arrived dressed as necessity and left someone smaller.

The door offered the same bargain in a deeper voice, promising proof, the caller, and a way out of the corner. The offer might actually help, which made it worse.

"Do we have administrative need right now, Omina?"

The drawer tried to give him a half answer. Administrative need was forming.

Ty shook his head.

"A forming need is only pressure right now."

Zunoder's voice remained smooth.

"Delay may forfeit caller proof inside this review."

That one hurt because it could be true. Ty let it hurt without letting it choose.

"Then the door waits outside my voice for now."

The choice felt humiliating. A useful weapon went back on the table while Zunoder watched. Ty let that humiliation stay visible because hiding it would give the door one more shadow to use.

The drawer recorded the refusal and its cost. Caller distress stayed sealed. Response claim weight dropped. The boot mark took another piece of steadiness from his legs, and Yun-Jin moved close enough for him to know she was there without giving the file a touch to price.

The reduced weight felt different this time. The caller stayed protected, but the thing sealed in the door stayed hungry in the record. Ty could feel Zunoder saving that for later. A sealed tool was still a tool in the room's imagination.

Zunoder looked pleased.

"He has refused the tool that could prove him."

Ty kept his eyes on the item label.

"Write that I refused it before contact with me."

Omina wrote the line herself. Ty had refused the door before contact.

The drawer accepted it. Under the sealed item warning, the review opened the next step.

Administrative need remained pending Lost Property review.
