Chapter 836 - 836: The Bone Witness Has No Mouth

The pull toward the door moved through the missing finger first.

Ty felt it as a line under the skin that was no longer there. The ache ran from empty air into his wrist, then down through the boot mark until the floor seemed to choose a direction for him.

He stayed where he was.

That took more work than stepping would have.

Omina saw the shift in his weight and put her pen down before she touched the hilt.

"No movement toward the sealed item while title pressure is active."

The drawer accepted the limit, then tried to name the next issue anyway.

Lost bone witness.

The words looked smaller than they felt.

JJ stared at them.

"A missing finger is not a witness stand."

Zunoder answered from the center of the room.

"A severed part can carry route condition and title contact."

Yun-Jin moved closer to Ty's right side.

"It can carry handling damage before it carries testimony."

Omina wrote that version first. Handling before testimony. No summoning. No bone response. No title response. No item opening. No ownership frame.

The drawer resisted the last limit.

Ownership had teeth in Lost Property. It kept trying to bite through every safer word.

JJ looked ready to hurt him with grammar.

Omina wrote only that.

Zunoder leaned in at once.

"Only after handling is separated from ownership first."

"Ownership may follow authentication if the room gets lazy."

"So can theft when the office writes neatly," Jade said from the shelter feed.

The drawer took both possibilities.

Ty felt the title check press under his heels again. It liked authentication. The word sounded official enough to hide the hand using it.

Mara watched the drawer with both palms flat.

"Old doors used pieces because pieces were harder to argue with."

Rose turned toward her.

"Say that again without giving it a recipe."

Mara swallowed.

"A piece can be treated as proof when the person is too inconvenient to ask."

That entered cleanly enough to make Ty hate the room.

Zunoder took the risk and offered it back as help.

"If the missing bone authenticates him against the door, it may resolve the title question."

Ty looked up.

"Resolve the title question for whose benefit first?"

The question landed better than he expected.

Zunoder paused.

Omina used the pause.

"Beneficiary first. The room asks who gains from the bone speaking."

The drawer opened three lanes.

Ty could gain body continuity.

The route could gain title attachment.

The sealed door could gain contact.

JJ gave a short laugh without humor.

"That is a knife, a bandage, and a mouth on the same tray."

Caelin's aide repeated none of it on the public feed. For once, someone in the office learned fast enough to matter.

Caelin said, "Public caption stays at protected evidence handling today."

Jade answered before anyone could praise him.

"Add no bone collections and no missing-body claims."

The aide typed with both hands.

Ty saw Waddell read the caption on the shelter tablet, his face changing at missing-body claims by just enough. The shelter had children who had lost too many names already. It probably had children who had lost pieces too.

Anika moved behind him with a tray and said something off camera. Mason answered too quietly for the tablet to catch. Jade lifted one hand, palm down, and the boy stayed out of the record.

That tiny mercy cost nothing the drawer could understand.

The caption still mattered. Out in the feed, people would turn missing bone into a search term if Caelin's office left them room. They would ask for proof, then pictures, then a person to blame for keeping either one away.

Jade knew it too. Her hand stayed raised until the aide finished typing the second warning.

"No body-part lists, no private searches, and no proof demands from strangers."

The aide posted it without looking to Caelin first.

The bone witness request opened under Omina's limits.

No image appeared.

Ty was grateful and angry about the gratitude.

The word tried to make the absence available.

JJ's pencil dug into her page.

Zunoder spoke as if the tag solved something.

"Purpose assignment shows functional title relevance through use."

Yun-Jin cut in.

"It shows someone found a use after the injury."

Omina wrote use after injury, no ownership created.

The drawer gave it moderate weight because the earlier lock had already forced that lane open. Ty felt the relief and distrusted it. The file liked consistency when consistency saved it from admitting cruelty twice.

Then the third record opened.

Authentication attempt.

The word changed the room before anyone argued with it.

Heissman's hands went still. Mara's shoulders drew in by a fraction. Caelin's aide stopped typing. Even Zunoder gave the record space, because some words did his work better when everyone had time to fear them.

Ty hated that authentication sounded almost respectable.

It was a clean word for pressing a lost piece of him against something sealed and waiting to see whether the old rule recognized the damage.

The boot mark pulled hard enough to make Ty's knee bend.

Yun-Jin caught his sleeve again, not his hand. Cloth wrinkled under her grip. The room noticed the cloth and left his body alone.

Omina's voice stayed level.

"Stop before object or door contact enters the record first."

The drawer held.

Barely.

Zunoder's eyes sharpened.

"Authentication attempt means the bone reached title machinery."

"It means someone tried to use it that way."

"The distinction will not erase the attempt from evidence."

"No, and that answer gets no comfort from me," Omina said. "It keeps the attempt from becoming consent today."

Ty held onto that sentence.

Mara's face went white around the mouth.

Rose saw it and stepped closer to her side of the tape.

Zunoder turned the new line toward Ty.

"The door registered enough contact for you to exploit."

"Receive is your word, not the record's wording," Omina said.

The drawer offered neutral phrasing.

Threshold registered contact.

Ty wanted to laugh again and hated that too. Registered contact sounded like a polite clerk touching the edge of a nightmare with a stamp.

Heissman read the record twice.

"There should be a handler entry underneath that attempt."

JJ looked at him.

"Should is where your office keeps bodies hidden."

Heissman took the hit. Maybe he deserved it. Maybe he deserved worse. He still pointed at the blank place under the attempt.

The drawer searched.

The room waited.
