Chapter 454: Chapter 231: Tsar’s Treasure? Legend or Reality?

"S-Sir, you’re saying... we can come with you?" Mel and Hiri could hardly believe their ears. As far as they were concerned, Su Chen had to be from some mysterious and powerful conglomerate; otherwise, how could he so easily order the head of IPS to investigate their families?

Yet now, this big shot was extending an olive branch to them. Just moments before, they had thought they would be silenced by Su Chen’s men to ensure their secrecy.

The sudden reversal of fortune was like a roller coaster, and the ups and downs left the two of them feeling completely flustered.

"Hmm... You two have been golden hunters for many years, so you must be capable. As it happens, I need capable people. What do you say?" Su Chen finished, a slight smile on his face as he looked at them.

Mel and Hiri exchanged a glance, and each saw a spark of excitement in the other’s eyes. Even if they spent their whole lives as golden hunters, they would still, in the end, just be ordinary men.

But if they started working for this mysterious magnate, their own status would naturally rise, and they would no longer have to live a life constantly on the move.

Of course, that was all contingent on them being able to provide enough value. They were both well aware of that.

Mel and Hiri helped each other to their feet. They even took a moment to straighten their clothes. Though their outfits were already filthy and tattered, they still tried their best to look presentable.

"Thank you for your trust, Sir!" the two brothers said, bowing respectfully to Su Chen.

Su Chen smiled and patted both their shoulders, then turned to Ivan, who was standing at the door. "Give them back their personal belongings. And if they’re missing anything else, make sure they get it."

He then turned his gaze back to the two brothers. "Get some proper rest and regain your strength. It’s likely going to be a busy time for a while. If you want to let your families know you’re safe, you can call them. That way they won’t worry."

"Yes, Sir!" Mel replied respectfully. They naturally understood the implications of Su Chen’s words. But at this point, they had no other ambition than to latch onto a powerful backer like Su Chen.

After offering a few simple words of reassurance, Su Chen glanced at Xiao Chen beside him, then turned and walked out of the small wooden cabin.

Only after the three had left did Mel and Hiri finally collapse onto the wooden bed.

They stared at each other, and in their eyes was the shared expression of having narrowly escaped death.

"Brother, are we really just giving up on the treasure like this?" Hiri couldn’t help but ask.

"What other choice do we have? Did you think I was just stalling before? Let’s be honest—even if we did find the treasure, so what? Do you think we could have kept it safe?"

"You heard a little about that man’s background. Following him is better than constantly running around. Now that we’ve made our decision, don’t second-guess it," Mel said earnestly.

It would be a lie to say he didn’t covet the Tsar’s treasure, but that whole thing was a pipe dream. It was still up in the air whether it could even be found.

For now, it was more practical to focus on how they were going to find that gold mine.

Meanwhile, Su Chen and Xiao Chen had walked out of the cabin and sat down by a bonfire.

"I’ve got to say, you have some serious nerve," Xiao Chen remarked with a sigh. ’If it were me, I never would have recruited those two. I wouldn’t want any potential liabilities by my side.’

Su Chen clearly enjoyed Xiao Chen’s compliment. He grinned broadly and laughed. "Hahaha! Isn’t there an old saying? ’Trust those you employ, and don’t employ those you distrust.’ Besides, the Mel brothers are quite capable!"

Xiao Chen nodded at his words but didn’t reply, simply gazing into the roaring bonfire as his thoughts drifted elsewhere.

Su Chen, beside him, was no different, lost in his own thoughts as well.
