Chapter 316: Chapter 316: Hating Iron for Not Becoming Steel
"I’m obviously betting on the Twilight Guild! That Kaber guy is a top-tier expert who’s been famous for a long time!"
"I think the Dawn Guild is pretty good too."
"Ask is strong, but he’s still a notch below Kaber."
"This is a team battle, not a one-on-one duel."
"Why don’t you guys bet on the free agent? If the free agent wins, you’d sweep the entire pot!"
"Bro, we may be gamblers, but we’re not idiots. Who would just throw their money away like that?"
...
"By the way, what’s up with the Twilight Guild and the Dawn Guild?"
"Yeah! Why did they suddenly start clashing?"
"What else could it be? I heard members from the two guilds clashed while fighting over a new mining area. Several people died, and they couldn’t settle the dispute."
"That’s some serious bad blood, then!"
"Of course. If the big shots from both guilds weren’t being relatively restrained and trying to keep things from escalating, they wouldn’t have set these rules. They agreed to only use V3 Mechanical God equipment and field only one team. On top of that, only the team leader is allowed to use custom-grade gear. Otherwise, we might’ve even seen V4 Mechanical God gear."
"That would’ve been taking things a bit too far."
...
「In the main hall.」
Gu Yi yawned, pacing back and forth in the hall out of boredom as he waited for his father to return.
Just then, his gaze inadvertently swept over the duel betting list displayed on the hall’s virtual screen.
He suddenly saw Red Ghost’s portrait and name.
Gu Yi froze for a moment, then rubbed his eyes and took a closer look.
He hadn’t expected Red Ghost to be on the betting list. Below his name, the total bet amount was 0.
Gu Yi stared at Red Ghost’s name, stunned.
He remembered clearly that this Red Ghost was very strong. He was the one who had snatched the observatory mission right from under everyone’s noses.
’If it’s him, he might actually have a chance to win.’
And for some reason, Gu Yi felt a sense of familiarity when he looked at Red Ghost. The man’s silhouette strongly resembled Brother Long Ming.
At this thought, Gu Yi’s heart began to race, and he headed toward the betting counter.
Just then, Gu Yong noticed Gu Yi’s unusual behavior and discreetly followed him.
Soon, Gu Yi arrived at the betting counter.
"Sir, how may I help you?"
"I’d like to place a bet on the duel between the Twilight Guild and the Dawn Guild."
"No problem. Who would you like to bet on?"
"I want to bet on Red Ghost."
"Red Ghost? The free agent?"
The staff member paused, giving Gu Yi a strange look.
"Yes, is that possible?"
"Of course!"
"Then put 100 Star Coins on him for me!"
"I’m sorry, sir. Since no one has bet on him yet, the minimum opening bet is 10,000 Star Coins."
"That much? Can’t you make it less?"
"No. If you bet on any of the other open options, any amount is fine," the staff member explained to Gu Yi.
Gu Yi was suddenly in a difficult position.
His entire savings amounted to only 34,302 Star Coins. 10,000 was no small sum.
If he lost, it would still be within a range he could bear, but it would be a significant loss nonetheless.
But for some reason, Gu Yi had a strong premonition that Red Ghost might win!
"So, sir, will you be betting? The total prize pool for this duel has already reached 50 million Star Coins. If your bet wins, you’ll sweep the pot," the staff member said with a smile.
Hearing the staff member’s words, Gu Yi got swept up in the heat of the moment and decided to go for it.
"Put ten thousand on him for me!"
"Right away!"
The staff member replied with a wide smile, then handed the betting slip to Gu Yi.
Just then, Gu Yong saw Gu Yi place the bet. A brilliant smile spread across his face as he turned and walked away, heading toward Tao Sisi.
"Sisi!"
"Gu Yong, what is it?" Tao Sisi asked politely when she saw him calling to her.
"Sisi, there’s something I’m not sure if I should tell you."
Gu Yong put on a troubled expression.
"What is it? You can tell me," Tao Sisi replied with a smile.
"Sigh... To be honest, I think you’re a good girl. And even though Gu Yi is my brother, some of the things he does... I just can’t stand by and watch," Gu Yong said to Tao Sisi, his voice full of emotion.
"What did he do?" Tao Sisi was taken aback and quickly pressed for an answer.
"My good-for-nothing brother... I could overlook him being idle and lazy in the past. But I never thought he’d start gambling. I just saw him place a bet," Gu Yong said, looking as if he were deeply disappointed in someone who failed to live up to their potential.
Tao Sisi exploded with anger upon hearing this and asked directly.
"Where is he?"
"Over there."
Gu Yong pointed into the distance.
Seething with rage, Tao Sisi stormed over.
Gu Yong watched Tao Sisi’s retreating back, a brilliant smile on his face.
’Ever since Gu Yi came home, Father praises him every day and finds fault with everything I do. I’m the eldest son, for crying out loud.’
’And what right does he have to find such a beautiful wife?’
Meanwhile, Gu Yi, having just placed his bet, was walking back with an anxious heart.
"Gu Yi!"
An angry voice suddenly called out.
"Sisi?"
Gu Yi was startled to see Sisi.
"Did you just gamble?" Tao Sisi demanded furiously.
"Sisi, let me explain. This isn’t gambling! I saw Red Ghost, and I think he’s really strong, so I just wanted to place a bet on him!"
"How much did you bet?"
"10,000 Star Coins!"
"You’ve disappointed me so much. I used to think you were just immature and that you’d eventually grow up. You’ve finally been behaving for the past year or two, and now you’re getting into gambling! Didn’t you see all those gamblers whose lives have been ruined when we walked in here?"
"Sisi, I did the math. 10,000 Star Coins is still within a range I can afford to lose."
"Gu Yi, shut up! Gambling is gambling, everything else is just an excuse! How can you face the late Brother Long Ming? He never should have helped you back then. I’m so, so disappointed in you."
By the end of her tirade, Tao Sisi burst into tears, turned, and ran off.
Gu Yi immediately hung his head in shame. At that moment, he felt he had truly been wrong.
He had been possessed to make such a foolish bet.
Gu Yi quickly ran back to the betting counter, found the same staff member, and asked anxiously.
"Can I get a refund for the bet I just made?"
The man in front of him chuckled at his words. But they had seen this sort of thing plenty of times, so he quickly replied.
"I’m sorry, sir. All bets are final. This casino has been open for hundreds of years, and no one has ever gotten a refund."
Hearing this, Gu Yi grew even more frantic and hurried outside to chase after Sisi.
But by the time he got outside the casino, she was already gone.
For a moment, Gu Yi walked back into the casino, completely crestfallen.
As he entered, he ran right into his furious-looking father and older brother.
"Fa-Father," Gu Yi stammered, a little afraid.
"You’ve disappointed me greatly. Go home, now!"
Gu Zhong snarled through clenched teeth, then led them away.
