Chapter 252: Chapter 252: Unique Class Skills
They did not leave right away.
The valley of floor 40 had gone quiet in a way that none of them wanted to disturb. Wildflowers swayed where the plaza had been. The last of the spirits had risen into the gold sky and thinned to nothing, and the only sound was the wind in the new grass and the soft, uneven breathing of five people who had spent everything they had.
Seraphina moved first. She knelt beside Barney with her satchel open, set his broken arm with two quick, practiced motions, and poured a pale gold elixir over the swollen flesh. Barney hissed through his teeth, swore creatively, and then went quiet as the swelling began to ebb. Mirei sat cross-legged in the grass with her head tipped back and her eyes shut, her new boots stretched out in front of her. Caelen stood a little apart, leaning on his sword, watching the green hills.
Rowan walked slowly across the ruins of the plaza and stopped at the place where the drum had broken.
The bone rim lay in pieces among the flowers, pale as old teeth. Nothing else remained. Nothing, that is, except the thing at the center, which had begun to glow.
It began as a single mote of light, no larger than a seed, hovering a hand’s breadth above the broken clay. It was gold. It pulsed once, softly, like a heartbeat. Then a second mote rose beside it, red as a forge coal. A third, deep blue. A fourth, the clear, bright green of new leaves. And a fifth, the darkest of all, a crimson so deep it was almost black.
They drifted upward in a slow, silent spiral, turning around one another like fireflies over a summer field.
"Is that..." Mirei began, opening her eyes.
"The floor reward," said Seraphina quietly. She had straightened and was staring, her fingers frozen on the stopper of a vial. "It must be. Five lights. Five of us."
"Five colors," said Barney, with deep reverence. "That red one’s got my name on it."
"It’s probably got all our names on it," said Caelen.
Orrun Tavesh’s seed, the pale one that had risen from the old priest’s hand, spun slowly in the air above the motes. It brightened, hung for a moment as if in blessing, and dissolved into a fine golden mist that settled over the five lights like a veil.
The motes moved.
Each drifted to a different member of the squad, slow and deliberate, as if choosing. The gold one came to Rowan. The red one settled over Barney’s chest. The blue one hovered before Seraphina, trembling. The green one spun in a delighted circle around Mirei’s head. And the crimson-black one floated, very quietly, to Caelen.
For a moment, no one moved.
Then the lights sank into their bodies, and the Tower spoke.
Warmth rose in Rowan’s chest like sunlight through a window, soft and golden and deep. A pane of pale light unfolded before his eyes.
[ UNIQUE CLASS SKILL ACQUIRED ]
[Summon Earth Elemental]
Skill Type: Active Summon / Utility / Combat
Cost: 150 Mana | Cooldown: 120 seconds (Combat) / None (Farming Mode)
Description: Calls forth a bound Earth Elemental, a living guardian of soil and stone, shaped by the user’s connection to the Primordial Laws of Earth. In Combat Mode, the elemental acts as a tank and striker, absorbing blows, shattering armor, and unleashing localized tremors. In Farming Mode, it tills, plants, tends, and harvests under the user’s direction, enriching the soil and accelerating the growth of crops within its reach.
Rowan read it through, twice. Then a small, genuine, unguarded smile spread slowly across his face.
"Well," he said. "That’s convenient."
"What did you get?" asked Mirei, bouncing to her feet.
"An elemental. Earth." He turned his palm up, and the gold light flickered beneath his skin. "For farming. And for fighting."
"Of course it is," said Seraphina. But she was smiling too.
"Let’s see yours first," said Rowan. He gestured around the circle. "One at a time. Barney?"
Barney needed no encouragement.
The red light had already burst from his chest in a crackling, joyful wave, and he stood in the ruins with his arms wide and his armor glowing like a banked furnace. The pane unfolded in front of him, bright as molten brass.

[Summon Fire Elemental]
Skill Type: Active Summon / Combat / Crafting
Cost: 150 Mana | Cooldown: 120 seconds
Description: Calls forth a bound Fire Elemental, a living flame of tireless fury. In Combat Mode, the elemental burns, charges, and detonates among enemy ranks. In Forge Mode, it serves as a living furnace, providing perfect, controllable heat for smithing and refining materials.
"A living forge," Barney whispered. He looked as if he might cry. "Boss, I have a living forge."
"I see that."
"I’m going to name it."
"You’re going to name it."
"Ember," said Barney, solemnly. "No. Cinder. No..."
"Barney."
"I’ll think about it."
He raised his hand, almost reverently, and a ball of flickering, orange-red light flared above his palm. It swelled, stretched, and unfurled into a small, squat figure, no taller than his waist, made entirely of living flame. It had two bright coals for eyes and stubby arms, and it looked up at Barney with an expression of such fierce, adoring loyalty that Mirei burst out laughing.
"It’s adorable," she said.
"It’s terrifying," said Barney, with enormous pride.
The elemental crossed its small arms, raised its chin, and sneezed a tiny shower of sparks.
Seraphina took her skill with more restraint, but her hands were not quite steady as the blue light settled into her chest. The pane that unfolded before her glimmered like a rippling pool.

[Summon Water Elemental]
Skill Type: Active Summon / Support / Combat
Cost: 150 Mana | Cooldown: 120 seconds
Description: Calls forth a bound Water Elemental, a living current of pure, shifting water. In Support Mode, the elemental purifies, cleanses, and restores, washing away toxins and aiding recovery. In Combat Mode, it entangles, drowns, and sweeps away enemies with tides of crushing force.
"Oh," said Seraphina, very softly.
She held out a hand. A thin stream of clear water rose from nothing, wound through the air in a shimmering ribbon, and gathered itself into a slender, graceful figure the height of a child. It had no face, only a smooth, flowing outline and two pale, luminous eyes. It bowed to her, and she let out a small, startled laugh.
"It is purifying the air," she said. "I can feel it. The residue of the smoke, the spirit-lure, the whole valley..." She pressed a hand to her chest. "It knows it. It knows what it’s cleaning."
"Can it heal Barney’s arm?" said Mirei.
"I hardly think..." Seraphina paused. "Actually, yes. I believe it can."
She gestured. The water elemental glided across the grass, laid its flowing hand gently over Barney’s bandaged forearm, and let a pale, cool light seep into the wound. Barney’s eyes went wide.
"That’s cold!"
"It is helping."
"It’s cold, Sera."
"It is helping, Barney."
He flexed his fingers. The swelling was gone. The bruising had faded to a pale yellow. He stared at his arm, then at the small, glimmering figure, and then, quite solemnly, he bowed to it.
"Thank you," he said.
The elemental tilted its head, and a tiny wave rippled across its surface, almost like a smile.
Mirei had already been dancing on her toes for a minute when the green light finally broke free. It exploded out of her in a whirl of leaves, and her hair streamed behind her like a banner. The pane glowed bright as spring grass.

[Summon Wind Elemental]
Skill Type: Active Summon / Ranged Support / Mobility
Cost: 150 Mana | Cooldown: 120 seconds
Description: Calls forth a bound Wind Elemental, a swift, invisible spirit of the open air. In Ranged Mode, the elemental guides and accelerates arrows, bending their flight and adding piercing force. In Mobility Mode, it carries the user or their allies in great leaps and glides, and sweeps away smoke, obscurement, and projectiles.
"Yes," breathed Mirei.
She lifted one hand, and a swirl of wind rose around her wrist, a tiny, laughing gust that spun leaves into a coil and sent her hair flying. It had no body, no face, only a presence, bright and mischievous, like a very young child playing in a field. It tugged on her sleeve. It stole her hat, a cheerful little cap she had tucked into her belt, and flung it into the sky. Mirei shrieked with delight, whirled, and dove after it.
The wind caught her.
She did not fall. She flew, three, four, five meters into the golden air, spinning like a leaf, with her arms spread wide and her boots trailing silent arcs. She snatched the cap out of the sky, laughed so hard that she nearly dropped it, and landed lightly in the grass beside her brother.
"Did you see that?" she gasped. "Did you see that? It carried me!"
"I saw," said Caelen. For the first time that day, something warm flickered at the corner of his mouth.
"I’m naming it Zephyr."
"That is a very common name for a wind spirit."
"It’s my wind spirit."
That left Caelen.
He had not moved since the lights sank into the squad. He stood very still, with his sword point-down in the grass and his hands resting on the pommel, and the crimson-black glow beneath his skin pulsed slowly, like a second heartbeat. The pane that unfolded before him was darker than the others, edged in deep red, and for a long moment, he did not read it.
Then he did.
[ UNIQUE CLASS SKILL ACQUIRED ]
[Berserk]
Skill Type: Active Buff / Combat
Cost: 100 Stamina | Cooldown: 90 seconds
Duration: 20 seconds
Description: The user channels the pain of every wound into raw, devastating force. While active, all damage dealt increases in direct proportion to the damage the user has received during the current battle. The more the user has suffered, the harder the user strikes.
He read it a second time. His jaw tightened.
"Brother?" said Mirei.
He did not look at her. He was staring at the pane, and the pulse of crimson beneath his skin had quickened. "It scales with damage taken," he said, at last, very quietly.
"That sounds strong."
"It sounds dangerous." He lifted his head, and the old, careful stillness was gone. In its place, for a heartbeat, Rowan saw something raw and uncertain. "To use it well, I have to be hurt. And I have to keep fighting through it. That is not the way I was trained."
"You were trained to hold the line," said Rowan, gently.
"Yes."
"And what is a line, if not something that stays standing while everything hits it?"
Caelen was silent.
"He’s right," Barney said, and for once, there was no teasing in his voice. He had stopped fussing with his flaming companion and stood at Caelen’s side, one huge hand resting on his shoulder. "You’re the shield, mate. You always have been. The more they hit you, the more it’s a problem for them." He grinned, a little crookedly. "This just makes it official."
Caelen let out a long breath. The red pulse beneath his skin slowed, softened, and settled to a steady, low glow.
"I do not intend to lose myself," he said.
"You won’t," said Mirei, fiercely, and caught his hand. "Not while I’m here to shoot you if you do."
For the first time in many hours, Caelen laughed. It was a short, startled sound, but it was real. And Rowan, watching, let his own shoulders ease.
They stood together in the green quiet while the golden light of the new floor poured slowly across the hills, five tired friends and four small, bright, impossible spirits.
Rowan stepped a little apart, lifted his hand, and let the gold light in his chest rise.
[Summon Earth Elemental]
The clay beneath his boots shimmered. The grass bowed. A low, deep note hummed through the ground, and a mound of dark, rich earth rose in front of him, heaving, folding, shaping itself with the unhurried patience of a river carving a canyon. It stood up. It stood taller than he did, broad-shouldered and slow, with arms like fallen logs and hands like shovels. Its skin was packed loam, veined with threads of gold. Moss grew along its shoulders. A small cluster of white wildflowers had sprouted in the hollow of its chest.
It had no face. But it turned, with great gravity, and bowed to him, and the wildflowers swayed.
"Hello," said Rowan, quietly.
The elemental raised one vast hand and, with extraordinary delicacy, laid a single fingertip against the brim of his Enchanted Straw Hat.
He laughed. He could not help it. The sound rolled out across the valley, easy and warm and a little breathless, and all around him, the squad began to laugh too, and the elementals, in their own strange ways, joined in. A small fire sneezed. A ribbon of water rippled. A gust of wind whirled the loose petals into a spiral. And the great earth guardian rumbled, deep in its chest, like the earth settling after rain.
"What will you call it?" asked Seraphina.
Rowan considered the broad, patient, flower-crowned figure for a long moment.
"I think," he said, "I’ll let it tell me."
The elemental regarded him with its faceless head. Then it knelt, slowly, and pressed both hands into the clay. A thin green shoot pushed up between its fingers. Then another. Then a dozen, a hundred, a field of them, rippling outward across the plaza like a tide.
"Tilling," said Rowan, wonderingly. "It’s tilling."
"Of course it is," said Mirei, grinning. "You’re a farmer, boss."
"Gardener."
"Farmer."
He did not argue.
The gold door at the end of the valley had been waiting patiently all this time, and when the squad finally turned toward it, it brightened, as though it, too, had been holding its breath.
"Rest first," said Seraphina, firmly, before anyone could speak. "A full night. Barney’s arm needs time, and Caelen..." She looked at him, and her voice softened. "Caelen needs to learn what he is carrying before he carries it into another fight."
"Agreed," said Rowan.
"I’ll make a camp," said Barney, and the little fire elemental leapt cheerfully onto his shoulder.
"I’ll gather herbs," said Seraphina, and the water spirit flowed after her.
"I’ll scout," said Mirei, and the wind wrapped itself around her like a scarf.
Rowan lingered for a moment at the edge of the green plaza. He looked at the broken bone, at the flowers growing through the cracks, at the great, gentle shape of the earth elemental kneeling in the grass. He thought of Orrun Tavesh, and the long, patient road the old priest had walked. He thought of a drum that had kept a thousand years of secrets, and of a boy from a farm who had asked the earth to let them go.
What falls returns, he thought.
He pressed his palm to the ground, one more time, and felt it hum.
Then he turned and followed the others into the dusk.
