Gathering Husbands with a System in a Game Like World [BL]
Chapter 123: Living Arrangement
I never owned pets, never liked them, never wanted the responsibility or the mess or the way animals looked at you like your whole house had become theirs by default.
Not even in my past life.
So of course the developers gave me a roommate who could turn into a giant black panther, walk around naked, and treat the room like a den that happened to contain furniture. If someone had asked me what kind of living arrangement would break me fastest, I might have described this exact situation and then laughed, because it would have sounded too targeted to be real.
It was real.
I shut the door behind me that first proper evening and immediately regretted every decision that had led me there. Kole was naked again, completely comfortable, drying his hair like trousers. The worst part was not only the nudity. It was the calm. He looked composed while doing it, dark-skinned and heavily built and so unbothered that I felt overstimulated before I managed one full sentence.
"We need rules," I said.
Kole glanced over and waited.
That patience made everything harder.
Living with a beastman who was more beast than man and the vice versa at the same time was a huge hassle. It was not just a handsome face with animal ears attached for flavor. It was territorial logic dropped into a shared room. It was scent-checking the sheets. It was a low growl when footsteps lingered too long outside the door. It was finding him asleep across the only bed in panther form, ribs rising and falling like the mattress had always been his, well it was but that was beside the point. It was also realizing he had gone through my bag without malice, only curiosity, because in his head there was no serious difference between inspecting a shared den and invading privacy.
He had good grooming. I had to give him that. His hair stayed clean, his skin stayed clean, and once he understood the bath and toilet routine there was nothing careless about the basic maintenance. Everything beyond that was off the hook. He paced before settling. He sniffed clothes. He stared without blinking. He climbed the indoor trunks every damn time. He left doors open unless I made the rule the effort to do so myself .
He saw no reason to wear clothes in what he considered private territory. He reacted to sudden noise like a predator.
For a human living with that, every ordinary action required extra work. Could I leave a uniform on the chair, or would it get investigated? Could I stretch on the bed without inviting him to claim the rest of it? Could I look at him too long without turning the air dense? The trees made it worse. I was still not over the trees. Actual living trunks in a dormitory room. In theory I understood the forest aesthetic. In practice it made me feel like I had been moved into his habitat rather than assigned housing.
"Clothes," I said, pointing before my eyes could wander again. "Rule one. You wear them when I am in the room."
Kole looked down at himself, then back at me.
"Why?"
"Because I can see everything."
"Yes."
"That is the problem."
He tipped his head, genuinely curious.
"Humans don’t go naked even when they are alone?"
"This human does when there is a giant panther man walking around with all his business out."
That got a small smile from him, quiet and loud at the same time, a little too pleased with my discomfort. He smiled like that through most of the evening, and every time he did my argument lost structure. He did put on loose pants eventually. No shirt though but I counted it as a partial win and refused to keep negotiating while I still had ground left.
Rule two became the bed.
There was still only one, broad and central and clearly not waiting for a second delivery. I told him we needed a boundary, a schedule, anything that did not end with me waking under a panther’s weight. Kole listened, nodded, and then explained that in beast custom the strongest sleeper took the warm center while the other took the outer edge. I told him we were not doing beast custom. He smiled again, slow and dangerous, and said we could try my way until it failed.
That was the pattern. He never openly fought me. He simply existed around my rules with enough calm pressure that I could feel them bending.
Rule three was the door.
He disliked closed space. I saw it in the way his shoulders tightened whenever the latch settled fully. Closed rooms made him restless, more likely to pace, more likely to shift. I compromised by leaving the window wards open longer than I preferred because the alternative was a caged mood I did not want after classes. Already I was rearranging my habits around his nature, and I knew it, and I hated that I knew it.
I also hated that part of me kept watching him too carefully.
Because unlike almost everyone else, Kole did not react to my face in the usual way. He simply acknowledged me, plainly at that matter and that unsettled me more than open desire. Around him I became too aware of my own need to impress, which was embarrassing enough that I still could not explain why I had shown him the storage ring so easily the night before. I had planned to keep that quiet. Then he stood there looking like a higher-tier problem, and I revealed it anyway.
Maybe I had wanted one thing in the room that made me look less ordinary.
The System, naturally, decided all of this was progress.
[New Mission Available.]
[Mission: Tame Your Eighth Husband.]
[Target: Kole Pendraven]
[Difficulty: High]
[Description: Establish stable coexistence, reduce unmanaged bestial friction, and form a functional bond without catastrophic boundary collapse.]
[Reward Package: Elevated]
[Included projections: affinity acceleration, combat support potential, authority growth contribution, and one high-tier beast-bond resource.]
[Failure projection: housing instability, elevated territorial conflict, and repeated heat-cycle disruption.]
I stared at the panel while Kole moved through the room behind it.
"Tame him," I muttered.
[Correct.]
"He is an SSS-rank beastman."
[Correct.]
"And my roommate."
[Correct.]
"I hate this school."
[Emotional response recorded.]
What made him difficult was the contrast. He could be careful with grooming and still completely alien in everything else. He ate with focus. He went quiet when irritated instead of loud. He watched my mouth when I talked. When he got too close, he did not always seem to realize he had crossed into human range. Sometimes I turned and found him right there, calm as deep water and twice as hard to read. If I snapped, he did not flinch. He only studied me like my temper was useful information.
And through it all, he smiled.
Not constantly though...A slight curve when I complained about the trees. A wider one when I lost my place mid-sentence because he stretched. A dangerous hint of fang when I told him the bed had sides for a reason. That smile disrupted me more than the panther form, because the panther was honest. The smile made me feel like he knew exactly how badly he was getting under my skin and had decided not to rush.
By evening I had given up on proper revision. I sat on my claimed edge of the bed with orientation notes open and spent half the time complaining out loud about the arrangement. I complained about the trunks, the single bed, the den logic, the mission, the warden, and the fact that every time I tried to act unbothered he looked at me like patience had taken a handsome form and moved in.
Kole listened from low against one of the trunks, green eyes half-lidded, that faint smile coming and going whenever my voice got too sharp. He looked almost drowsy with amusement, which was unbearable.
I was still going when his breathing changed.
At first I thought he was bored. Then the sound deepened, heavier, less controlled, until it was no longer the quiet breathing of a man half-listening to complaints. I stopped mid-sentence and looked properly.
Kole’s chest was rising too hard. A red glint had entered his green eyes, faint at first and then clearer, and the calm he usually carried had tightened into something hotter and less stable.
"Now what?" I asked.
He did not answer immediately. His hands flexed against his thighs, claws threatening at the nail beds, and when my gaze dropped without permission the problem became extremely specific. He was hard enough that the loose pants had stopped being theoretical cover. The outline of him was thick, heavy, and impossible to ignore politely.
The System arrived with appalling convenience.
[Alert.]
[Kole Pendraven has entered heat state.]
[Host assistance can stabilize the episode.]
[This event is linked to active mission: Tame Your Eighth Husband.]
[Recommended action: provide controlled relief and maintain dominance of pacing where possible.]
I blinked at the panel, then at him.
"Huh?"
Kole’s voice came lower than before, rough around the edges.
"It started early."
I should have stood up, left the room, found the warden, and demanded a transfer. That would have been the sensible route. Instead I stayed where I was, notes forgotten, pulse climbing, eyes caught between the red glint in his gaze and the unmistakable strain below it.
I never liked pets.
I never wanted one.
And against every cautious instinct I owned, I was still interested in the beastman breathing too hard across from me.
