From the beginner-level months, it had been customary for the three friends to hang out on free days, and it had happened at least three times a month without much effort. Snacking, complaints, minor gossip, and the simple relief of sitting with people who did not want anything from Kai except his company.

In intermediate, the work thickened so fast that a true free day did not come until weeks later. By then the tension between Kai and Rolf had stacked high enough that other students could feel the animosity from a distance.

Kole had fucked him more than five times since the first heat, usually with that same calm intensity that left Kai sore, quiet, and less willing to explain himself to anybody.

Pen Calder had also grown bolder in the corridors, all class-leader charm and wandering eyes, and Mira had started watching the whole mess with exhausted patience.

So when free day finally arrived, it did not feel like it used to.

They met near the east garden out of habit more than harmony. Mira arrived first, then Kai, then Rolf with his bag half-slung and his expression already guarded. For a little while they tried to pretend the old custom still fit.

"Hey!" Kai said hugging Mira and Rolf did the same seprately, now mind you it was always a group hug, after that, they fell into scilence involuntarily.

Even when they set thier self down on the bench and unloaded the snacks they brought It was in scilence and the silence under it all was heavy enough to make the meet up feel uncomfortable and unwanted.

Mira lasted less than ten minutes.

"That’s it!" She yelled breaking the scilence and startling them.

"What’s wrong?" Kai asked even though he knew what she was on about, he didn’t blame her, he would do the same in her situation too.

"I am done," she said, setting her cup down hard. "You two are going to talk and by talk i mean properly "

Kai frowned.

"We do talk."

"No," Mira said. "You exist near each other. That is a different thing all together"

Rolf’s jaw tightened, but he did not argue. That alone told Kai how long this had been coming. Mira pointed toward the deeper path between the trimmed hedges and shade trees.

"Garden! Now. If you come back still acting like strangers, I am leaving this friendship immediately"

"You cannot do that," Kai said.

"oh yeah? Come back here the same way and watch me work"

She left them with no hesitation and after a beat of mutual reluctance Kai and Rolf walked the path in silence. The garden was quieter than the courts, green and open, with stone benches set under the tree shades. A few students crossed at a distance, but none close enough to matter. It was as much privacy as the Academy ever offered in daylight.

They stopped near a low fountain.

Kai did not circle the subject.

"Why have you been acting like this?"

Rolf let out a short breath and stared at the water instead of him.

"You know why."

"I know what you saw," Kai said. "I do not know why weeks of cold shoulder was the answer."

Rolf’s mouth twisted.

"Because I walked to your door ready to fix things, and instead I got you naked and a huge man behind you asking for another round like I had interrupted dinner."

Kai winced.

"That is fair."

"It was more than awkward," Rolf said. "It was humiliating. I stood there feeling stupid for caring, and then I got angry that I felt stupid, and then it was easier to stay angry than admit any of that out loud."

Kai watched him for a moment and softened despite himself.

"So say it out loud."

Rolf finally looked at him properly. The irritation was still there, but under it sat something more tired and more honest.

"I like you," he said. "Not in the convenient friend way. Not in the we study together and share food way. I like you enough that seeing someone else walk out of your room like that messed me up. I kept telling myself it was none of my business, and every time I saw you with him it still hit anyway."

The garden went quieter around the confession.

Kai did not laugh it off. He did not rush to protect Kole either. He simply took the words as they were.

"I did not know it ran that deep."

"I know," Rolf said. "That is part of why it was pathetic."

"It is not pathetic."

Rolf shrugged, clearly unconvinced.

"Maybe not. But it is one-sided enough that staying in the same lane started feeling pointless."

Kai frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Rolf rested his hands on the edge of the fountain and stared out across the garden beds.

"I am transferring."

Kai straightened.

"Transferring where?"

"To train under knight studies."

For a second Kai only stared at him.

"You are serious."

"Yes."

"Rolf, that is not a small change."

"I know."

Kai shook his head, still catching up.

"But all your progress, you will be going back to beginner level if you switch."

"I know," Rolf said. "That is why it is better to do it early now, is it not?"

The logic landed whether Kai liked it or not. Intermediate had only just begun. Waiting longer would make the cost worse. Still, the idea of Rolf disappearing from the daily shape of his life hit harder than expected even though he had really not been part of it like he used to but still.

"Explain this prperly," Kai said. "Because from here it looks like you are running."

Rolf gave a humorless smile.

"Maybe I am running a little. That does not make the decision fake." He turned more fully toward Kai.

The Academy has three main lanes. Magic. Knighthood. Innovatory studies. Students are supposed to choose where their talent actually falls and build around that.

"I entered magic because I am the eldest son of Duke Ashwin, and my house wanted me literate in formal casting before I ever touched command training. That was always the plan. Learn the theory. Learn enough practical structure. Then move."

Kai absorbed that slowly.

Duke Ashwin’s eldest. That detail alone reframed every quiet competent thing Rolf had done since the beginner months. He had never performed about his noble status loudly.

"So the mage track was never permanent."

"No," Rolf said. "It was preparation. And now I know enough to stop pretending this is the lane I mean to stay in."

Kai was quiet for a stretch, then nodded once.

"Does Mira know?"

"Not yet. I will tell her tonight."

The sadness came in under Kai’s ribs without permission.

"we will miss you."

Rolf laughed under his breath.

"Come on, Valerius. You have enough boys swooning over you to notice I am even gone."

Kai frowned hard.

"Rolf, I am serious. I will miss you. Seven months is not a joke."

The laughter faded when Rolf saw he meant it. His expression settled into something gentler and more careful.

"Well. I guess you will miss me."

"I wish we had more time."

"Me too."

They stood with that for a moment, the kind of silence that belonged to people who had finally put the real words down between them. Then Rolf exhaled and tipped his head, some of the old familiar rhythm returning around the edges.

"So," he said. "What really happened that day?"

Kai blinked.

"Which day?"

"The day you know. When I saw you naked and a big naked beast came asking for more."

Despite everything, Kai smiled and leaned his cheek into his hand.

"Come on. His name is Kole, and he is a beastman."

"Shit," Rolf muttered. "He is fucking huge."

"Tell me about it. I suffer every day."

"Are you good?"

"Just numb."

That broke both of them into laughter, rough and needed, the first clean sound they had shared in weeks.

Then the laughter thinned.

They looked at each other too long. The quiet changed temperature. Somewhere between relief and unresolved wanting, the space between them narrowed, and Kai felt the lean happen before he fully approved it. Rolf tilted in as well, close enough that the moment started to become a kiss.

A crack split the air above them.

Both of them jerked back as the sky darkened in a hard unnatural sweep, light draining out of the afternoon like someone had put a hand over the sun. Ward lines across the distant roofs flickered. Birds cut off mid-call. The garden’s gentle noise collapsed into a strained, listening silence.

Kai’s blood went cold.
