Gathering Husbands with a System in a Game Like World [BL]

Chapter 91: The Weight of Responsibility

"See you at dinner," Kai told the twins at the edge of the guest wing, and Claire and Cassandra both answered with matching waves before disappearing down their own corridor. He turned toward the quarters with one clear hope in mind. He did not want to bump into any of them. Not Elias, Not Rhydian, Not Ayan and most especially not Lucien.

Think again.

"Hey, Kai."

The voice stopped him in his tracks. He turned and found Lucien standing a few steps away, formal posture softened by something like worry around the eyes. One clear look at him would immediately tell you that this man was NOT okay.

"Can I talk to you... please."

Kai’s first instinct was to keep walking. He had done enough talking for one day, enough smiling, enough carrying other people’s feelings like luggage he never agreed to hold. He almost did it too. Then the System spoke with unusual firmness.

[This interaction is overdue. Relationship stabilization between Host and Candidate 002 is currently required.]

Required. As if his nerves were a schedule.

And what if I want to destabilize it? Kai thought, but this single thought fell through...

The System did not joke.

[If Candidate 002 is severed as a structural support, projected cascade failure rises sharply across multiple future branches. Candidate 002 functions as one of the ten stabilizing pillars connected to Host’s long-term route. Removal does not simply alter romance probability. It weakens the network that keeps major collapse events from accelerating.]

[Reminder of primary objective upon entry into this world: Unite the ten pillars. Change the fate of this world.]

The words landed harder than Kai expected. Unite the ten pillars.

Change the fate of this world.

For a moment the hallway felt narrower and the air thinner, and something heavy pressed down behind his ribs. Depression was too dramatic a word for it, but the shape was close enough. The sense that his life was no longer his in the simple way other people got to have one. That every connection came with cosmic paperwork attached.

He refused it.

He refused to fall into that hole in a palace corridor because a glowing interface reminded him he had a destiny. Destiny could wait its turn. He still got to choose how he walked into the next minute.

He turned fully toward Lucien and walked to him.

"What is it?"

Lucien’s gaze flicked down the hallway once, checking for listeners, and then his eyes caught on Kai’s neck. The mark Rhydian had left there sat faintly against his skin, and something hungry moved through Lucien’s expression before he could hide it. Warm spit gathered in his mouth. He swallowed it down hard.

Kai noticed. Of course he noticed, He scoffed under his breath without bothering to turn it into words.

"Can we go somewhere private?" Lucien asked.

Kai scoffed again.

"Fine by me."

Lucien led him out of the guest quarters and into the deeper main chambers of the palace. The deeper they went, the quieter the halls became, and the more the air carried that clean high-mana stillness unique to Eldoria’s royal wing.

"Where are we going?" Kai asked.

Lucien stopped and faced him.

"My quarters... if it is okay for you."

Kai rolled his eyes.

"Let’s go."

Lucien’s private chambers made the presidential suite in Veyrhold look like a decent inn room. The receiving space alone was wide enough to hold a full council meeting, with tall arched windows that opened onto a private terrace suspended above the glowing lower tiers of the city. stone and living silverwood framed the walls. Family portraits lined one side in solemn progression, painted eyes following the room with old-elven composure, while more personal studies of Lucien at different ages occupied another. There was a reading alcove filled with annotated texts, a weapon rack holding both ceremonial and practical blades, and a sitting area arranged around a low crystal table that caught the light like frozen water. Everything smelled faintly of clean resin, pressed paper, and expensive soap.

Kai was reluctantly impressed and hated that he was.

They entered his room finally, to meet servants moving through the room probably on maintenance.

"Leave us." Lucien said.

They vanished immediately, filing out in Thier numbers, the door sealed behind the last of them with a soft final sound. For a moment the silence between the two men felt almost too large for the room.

Then Lucien walked toward him and kissed him.

It was sudden enough that Kai’s mind lagged behind the fact of it. The soft pressure, the Familiar breath. The faint tremor of someone who had been holding themselves carefully in all day and had finally run out of restraint. Kai frowned against Lucien’s mouth as their lips met and did not immediately shove him off because the shock of it short-circuited his body for half a second.

Internally, the reaction was uglier and clearer.

Was this the talk? Was this what please had meant in the hallway? Not an apology. Not a conversation about the proposal or the fight or the impossible pressure of being wanted by too many dangerous men at once. Just this. Mouth first. Explanation never, For a thin and ugly moment Kai felt the edges of himself blur, as if he were becoming less a person with a day and a temper and a right to refuse and more a convenient place for other people’s longing to land. The feeling scraped against his dignity hard enough to hurt. He was tired of being claimed, Tired of being pulled into rooms. Tired of his body being treated like the answer before he had finished hearing the question.

Anger rose clean and bright through the center of that thought.

Kai used his strength for the first time in weeks and drove his fist into Lucien’s stomach with none of the restraint he usually kept welded over Infinite Strength. The impact landed with a deep and brutal sound. Lucien folded around the punch, lifted clean off his footing, and crashed backward through the chamber door in an explosion of splintering wood. He hit the corridor beyond in a sprawl of ruined paneling and dust, breath knocked hard from his lungs.

Kai stepped through the broken frame after him and rolled his shoulder once as the familiar weight of power settled deeper into his bones. Something in his arm and ribs cracked softly back into better alignment under the surge.

[Notice. Compatibility with Infinite Strength has increased.]

[Current compatibility: 40%.]

Kai looked down at Lucien through the settling dust, eyes hard and voice stripped of every soft edge the day had tried to force on him.

"Don’t touch me."
