Aster looked completely unfazed to see him, and Kai felt pure bewilderment slam into the center of his chest hard enough to scatter every prepared thought he had.

What was the Chairman doing here?

How had he gotten here?

When had he gotten here?

How did he even know Kai was in the city?

The energy signature the System had noticed hours earlier with Milo suddenly stopped feeling like a distant coincidence and started feeling like a warning Kai should have taken more seriously. Aster had been in Eldoria. He had been close enough for the System to taste the edge of him. And now he was standing on Kai’s balcony as if the floating height of an elven capital were nothing more than an inconvenient staircase.

"You look roughed up," Aster said. "What happened to you?"

Kai stared at him harder.

"What the... how did you get here?"

"I flew."

"That is not an answer."

Kai glanced past him toward the open air and the pale stone edge of the balcony and then toward the hallway door as a fresh spike of fear cut through the shock. If anyone walked by and saw the Chairman of the Dome framed in royal guest-room light, the political mess would become something much harder to contain even though he wasn’t sure if they knew whi he was.

He reached out, grabbed Aster by the front of his coat, and dragged him inside in one sharp motion before shutting the balcony access and locking the main door with more force than necessary.

Aster let himself be pulled without resistance and then glanced around the room with mild appraisal.

"Not bad for a palace."

Kai closed the curtain fully and left the chamber in a gloomier half-light before turning back to face him.

"You should not be here."

"I disagree."

"What?"

"As your boss, I need to keep eyes on my subordinate."

Kai blinked.

"Huh?"

For a second he almost thought Aster meant Elias, because that at least would have followed a recognizable kind of logic. Dome business. Old chains. Assassin hierarchy. Then Aster’s gaze stayed fixed on him and the misunderstanding collapsed under its own weight.

"I am not your subordinate."

"You are."

Aster stepped closer. Kai stepped back twice. Aster matched the movement with calm patience, and Kai returned the favor by giving more ground until the air between them started to feel narrower than the room should have allowed.

"Are you afraid of me?" Aster asked, still maddeningly calm.

Kai scoffed in a way that came out more awkward than defiant.

"What? No. No. I am not. I am not afraid of anything."

Aster quietly closed three more steps. Kai instinctively retreated until his back met the door and left him with nowhere else to go. The Chairman stopped close enough that the space between them became a held breath.

"Then why are you running away?"

"Running? No. I am not." Kai chuckled awkwardly and hated the sound of it. "I am simply... repositioning."

"Do not flinch."

Aster said it without warning and then covered the remaining distance so cleanly that Kai’s mind supplied the word teleport before he could stop himself. One moment there was still a slice of safe air. The next, Aster was right there, near enough that Kai could see the exact shade of his eyes and the faint lines at the corners of them and the absolute steadiness of a man who did not appear to understand why anyone would need space from him.

Kai flinched anyway.

The System chose that exact moment to chime in with bright and formal enthusiasm.

[Congratulations. A significant affinity increase has been registered.]

[Current development with Candidate 005 has crossed a major threshold.]

[This threshold is classified as a point of limited reversal and represents one of the strongest sustained affinity elevations recorded across all active candidates, excluding Candidate 006.]

Kai’s eye twitched.

Why the over-explanation?

[It is a stylistic choice.]

Have you gained sentience? Do you feel now? I knew it.

[That inquiry is revoked. The System is not authorized to answer.]

So you have gained sentience then?

[Host should focus on the present external interaction.]

Which was difficult, because Aster was still staring him down at a hair’s breadth with that same unnerving intensity and no apparent awareness of how much force his presence carried in a closed room.

"You flinched," Aster said.

"I mean, you quite literally pulled a—"

"Are you scared of me?"

Kai was tired of the charade, tired of the careful denial, tired of the way his pulse kept answering a question his mouth wanted to avoid.

"Yes."

Aster’s head tilted a fraction.

"Why? You should not be. I have never hurt you."

"It is not you exactly. It is the idea of you. Everyone believes you are this..."

"Scary person?" Aster finished for him. "I am not."

"Well..."

"I can prove I am not scary."

Kai frowned.

"How?"

What happened next was so far outside his expectations that his brain needed a full second to catch up. Aster stepped back and began removing his clothes with the practical efficiency of a man solving a misunderstanding through demonstration. Coat first. Then the rest of the formal layers. Gear, robe, and every remaining barrier between Chairman and bare skin came away until he stood stark naked in the dim guest-room light with no apparent shame at all.

Kai’s thoughts stopped in a clean blank line and then restarted in scattered pieces.

He counted abs without meaning to and reached twelve. Aster was densely toned, all controlled power under pale skin marked by old scars across his hands and chest, the kind of marks that spoke of real work and old violence rather than decorative hardness. He was not even hard. Soft, he was still a beast of length, heavy enough that the sight alone made Kai’s throat work around a swallow.

"You see?" Aster said. "No need to be afraid."

Kai stared at him.

"That is a rather unconventional way to show it."

Aster’s composure faltered for the first time, and the shift was so unexpected that Kai almost missed it. The most powerful man he had personally stood this close to suddenly looked faintly panicked around the eyes.

"Do you not like it?"

Kai felt heat climb hard into his face.

"I am not saying I do not like it. I am saying I am kind of shocked."

Aster glanced down at himself with visible concern.

"What? Is it the size?"

Kai actually retracted half a step and then chuckled despite himself.

"Size? Of what?"

And that was the moment the shape of Aster Ludacris rearranged in his head. For all the terror attached to his title and all the blood-soaked reputation that followed the Dome’s Chairman like a second coat, the man currently standing naked in a royal guest room was also somehow as socially oblique and gullible as a child who had learned power long before he learned ordinary human reactions. The realization landed with a strange soft edge.

Cute.

The word was ridiculous. It was also accurate enough to ease something in Kai’s chest.

Aster, still deeply serious, gestured awkwardly toward himself and then made a brief and deeply unfortunate motion with his hand before covering himself with both palms.

"Of my..."

Kai lost the battle and laughed. The sound came out real and unguarded and broke the last of the brittle tension that had held him pinned to the door. He stepped forward instead of back this time until they were face to face again, only now the closeness was something he had chosen.

"You are funny."

Aster blinked, as if that verdict were more confusing than fear.

"So," he said after a second, recovering a little of his earlier steadiness, "you never answered my question. What happened to you? You seemed troubled when I came in."

Kai sighed.

"Let us just say I had an altercation with someone."

"Are you hurt?"

"No. It is more that the other person is hurt."

"Oh." Aster studied his face. "Do you want to share?"

"No. Let us just forget it."

They had not noticed how much of the remaining space between them had disappeared until they were close enough to feel each other’s breath. The room felt warmer. The gloomy light made everything narrower and more deliberate. Kai could smell clean steel and cold air on Aster’s skin even now.

"Are you still scared of me?" Aster asked.

"No."

The kiss happened from both sides at once, less a decision than a collapse into the same instinct. It was raw and romantic and soft and then quickly more than soft, mouths fitting with a heat that surprised Kai by how easily it deepened. Aster’s hands left his own body and settled on Kai with unexpected care, holding him like the point had never been dominance at all. They kissed until the need for air forced them apart and a thin streak of spit still connected their mouths for a heartbeat before it broke.

Kai felt the change against him immediately. Aster was rock hard now, and the sheer scale of it made Rhydian’s already overwhelming size feel like a preparatory conversation. Kai swallowed and let out a short stunned chuckle under his breath.

Aster held his gaze and spoke with sudden earnestness.

"Do not look. I will not do anything."

Kai looked at him anyway, kissed him again with far less innocence, and reached for the fastenings of his own clothes with fingers that had stopped pretending this was still about fear.

Then came the knock.

Kai startled hard and turned toward the door as the sound cut straight through the heat in the room.

"Who is there?"

"It is me. Lucien."

Kai closed his eyes for one exhausted second and sighed.

Talk about a party pooper.

"Wait a minute."

He turned back toward Aster and found only empty air and the faint disturbance of a curtain still moving in the balcony draft. The clothes were gone. The man was gone. The heat of the moment remained, but the Chairman of the Dome had left as cleanly as he had arrived and taken every physical trace with him.

Kai stood alone in the half-lit room with his mouth still sensitive from the kiss and his pulse still too fast for dignity. He ran a hand through his hair, let out a longer breath, and lightly slapped both cheeks once as if that could rearrange his face into something less obvious.

He had not imagined it.

Aster Ludacris had been here.

Kai walked to the door with that fact still burning under his skin and prepared himself for Lucien on the other side.
