Chapter 444: The Holy Lyre

"Thank you very much for your help, Traveler."

After all the cats inside Angel’s Share had finally been gathered up and transported away, Kaeya turned to thank the outlander who had lent a hand.

"Don’t mention it. It was nothing, though I never expected this world to have cat cafés too."

Lumine had merely been passing by when she spotted Kaeya and a group of people awkwardly trying to catch a crowd of cats.

That’s why she decided to help.

As for what had actually happened, she still had no idea.

"A cat café?"

Kaeya blinked at the unfamiliar term.

But it didn’t take him long to realize that the Traveler had misunderstood.

"Actually... those aren’t cats. They’re all people."

"People?"

Not only Lumine, but Paimon as well wore expressions of complete disbelief.

They had certainly found the unusually adorable cats rather curious, but the thought that they might once have been human had never crossed their minds.

After all, how could perfectly normal people suddenly turn into cats?

"That’s right. For now, the Knights of Favonius have officially classified this incident as an accident, but..."

He stopped himself before finishing.

"..."

Looking at Kaeya, who clearly wanted to say more but deliberately held back, Lumine could tell exactly what he was doing.

He was intentionally trying to pique her curiosity.

What a clumsy tactic.

"All right, all right. Actually, the owner of this tavern is my brother, and I got an exclusive piece of information from him."

Seeing Lumine place her hands on her hips, Kaeya hurriedly explained.

"Really? Paimon heard that Master Diluc is incredibly rich! Just one bottle of wine he casually gives away could probably buy a whole house!"

Paimon wasn’t entirely convinced.

Although they hadn’t properly met Diluc yet, Kaeya certainly didn’t look anything like the young master of a wealthy family.

"He’s only my sworn brother, but we’re closer than real brothers."

In a sense, Kaeya wasn’t lying.

Though...

Perhaps the game those "brothers" enjoyed most was trying to outmaneuver each other at every opportunity.

"So, what’s this information?"

Lumine wasn’t particularly interested in Kaeya’s family affairs.

At least not yet, when she barely knew Diluc.

The information he mentioned interested her far more.

"It concerns one of the Fatui Harbingers."

"..."

The moment Kaeya said those words, Lumine knew he’d been looking into her recently.

Even so, she had no intention of letting him steer the conversation.

There was only one thing she cared about.

"Where is he?"

"...Well, we’d like to know that ourselves. After all, he’s the one who caused all this trouble."

Kaeya rubbed his forehead with an exaggerated look of distress.

His rather theatrical performance earned nothing more than a quiet sigh from Lumine as she turned to leave.

"Hey, hey, don’t go! I was just kidding. Fine, fine. He’s in Stormterror’s Lair."

After getting the location from Kaeya, Lumine made almost no preparations at all before immediately setting off toward Stormterror’s Lair.

Only after she had left did Diluc emerge from the shadows.

"Is it really a good idea to drag an uninvolved outsider into this?"

Unlike Kaeya, Diluc clearly disapproved of involving the Traveler.

Even if she happened to have countless connections to the Ausbilder.

"What’s wrong with it? I have a feeling that girl might solve a lot of problems for us."

In Kaeya’s eyes, Traveler was the perfect person to deal with Bai Luo.

If they could even use her against him—forcing the Ausbilder into awkward situations—then enduring his sworn brother’s disapproval would be well worth it.

"Hmph. Speaking of which, why were you so late today?"

Deciding not to argue further, Diluc changed the subject.

Given the Knights’ usual efficiency, they should have arrived soon after learning what had happened at the tavern.

Instead, they had taken at least twice as long as expected.

That alone would’ve been one thing.

But the people they brought were astonishingly clumsy—they couldn’t even manage the simple task of catching cats.

Though Diluc wasn’t exactly fond of the Knights of Favonius, he could tell something unusual had delayed them.

"There was an incident at the Cathedral. Someone tried to steal the Holy Lyre," Kaeya answered with a helpless sigh.

"If the Knights’ headquarters hadn’t been heavily damaged by Dvalin, forcing us to temporarily relocate our offices to the Cathedral... they might actually have succeeded."

"Oh? Someone tried to steal the Holy Lyre?"

Perhaps because the person standing before him was Kaeya rather than an ordinary Knight of Favonius, Diluc didn’t respond with his usual sarcasm. Instead, he fell into thought.

The Holy Lyre was said to be the instrument of Barbatos, the Anemo Archon.

While it sounded unimaginably valuable, in reality it was more of a white elephant—too precious to discard, yet practically useless to own.

First of all, it simply couldn’t be sold.

If there was anyone in Mondstadt wealthy enough to buy such a historically significant relic, it would undoubtedly be Diluc himself.

But stealing the Holy Lyre just to sell it to Diluc?

That would be like walking into a tiger’s den looking for death.

Sell it abroad?

Liyue, Mondstadt’s neighboring nation, had no conflict with Mondstadt—in fact, the two countries enjoyed friendly relations.

If they learned that one of the Anemo Archon’s sacred treasures had been stolen, they would most likely help Mondstadt recover it rather than buy it.

Therefore, whoever stole the Holy Lyre couldn’t possibly have been motivated by money.

With that established, the list of suspects became much shorter.

All signs pointed toward a single organization—the Fatui.

After all, they had always been collecting artifacts related to the gods.

Attempting to steal the Holy Lyre wasn’t particularly surprising for them.

"So, you’ve come to the same conclusion?"

Kaeya smiled wryly.

"Unfortunately... although we caught the thief, their background was spotless. There wasn’t the slightest connection to the Fatui."

Anyone with half a brain could tell the culprit was nothing more than a scapegoat the Fatui had pushed to the forefront.

But without concrete evidence, the Knights had no grounds to confront the Fatui.

"If the Knights of Favonius were even half as clever as the Fatui, Mondstadt probably wouldn’t be in the state it’s in today."

Crossing his arms, Diluc once again spared no effort in criticizing the Knights.

Just as he had once said:

If Mondstadt was in trouble, he would unquestionably be the Knights’ greatest ally.

But if Mondstadt had no troubles...

He himself would become the Knights’ newest headache.

"Well," Kaeya said, "at least the Lyre is still safe. Though from now on, security around the Cathedral is probably going to be much tighter than before."
