Ghost in the palace
Chapter 464: twins helping
Their parents must be proud."
The twins heard the praise and exchanged delighted smiles.
The younger one leaned toward her sister.
"Did you hear that? They said we’re good children."
Her sister tried to maintain a dignified expression.
"Of course. We always are."
"Then why did you hide behind me when the instructor shouted this morning?"
"That was because you were standing in front of me!"
"Excuses!"
Their argument began quietly but quickly became animated.
Lin Wei, who had returned after delivering the elderly man’s bundle, shook his head.
"You two can turn anything into an argument."
"We’re discussing important matters," the elder twin replied.
"Very important," the younger twin agreed solemnly.
"What matters?"
"Whether you’re the most annoying person in our family."
Lin Wei stared at them.
Then he laughed.
"Fine. Continue your discussion. I’ll go help someone who appreciates me."
The twins immediately followed him, protesting that they appreciated him perfectly well.
Lian An watched the three of them with amusement.
"They really do behave like siblings," she remarked.
The Emperor glanced at the cheerful group.
"They certainly do."
For a moment, Lian An’s smile softened.
The twins were pretending to be her younger sisters, and Lin Wei was playing the role of their older brother. Yet their affection for one another had grown naturally.
They were no longer merely performing a part for the other travellers.
They had become a family in their own way.
Near midday, the instructor finally ordered a short break.
The group settled beside a stream where they could refill their water containers and rest their feet.
The difference from the previous two days was remarkable.
Nobody wandered away without permission.
Nobody complained that the stop was too short.
Instead, people ate their prepared food, checked their belongings, and made sure the children had enough water.
The chief instructor walked among them, looking increasingly satisfied.
"See? When everyone cooperates, the journey becomes much easier."
One young man nodded earnestly.
"Instructor, we understand now. We wasted too much time before."
"Remember that lesson."
"We will."
Nearby, the twins sat on a flat stone, sharing a piece of pastry.
Lin Wei approached with three cups of water.
"Here. Drink before we leave."
The younger twin accepted hers immediately.
"Thank you, Brother."
The word came out so naturally that she did not even pause.
Lin Wei also seemed to accept it without thinking.
Only after taking a sip did the girl suddenly realise what she had said.
She glanced at Lian An.
Fortunately, the Empress was busy speaking with Yao Qing.
The elder twin leaned close and whispered, "Be careful. We’re supposed to be pretending."
The younger girl whispered back, "I know! It just slipped out."
Lin Wei heard them and smiled.
"Don’t worry. Nobody is suspicious."
He handed the elder twin her water.
"Besides, if you’re going to pretend to be my sisters, you should at least let me take care of you occasionally."
The twins beamed.
"Then carry our bags when we leave!"
His smile disappeared.
"That was not what I meant."
The two girls burst into laughter.
Even the manager, who was sitting nearby, laughed at their antics.
### Moving Forward Together
When the break ended, the instructor called everyone back to the road.
This time, the group assembled quickly.
The horses were checked, the carts secured, and the children settled comfortably among their families.
Before they resumed travelling, the chief instructor looked at the party.
"Remember what happened last night. We must remain alert, but we must not allow fear to make us careless. Stay together, follow instructions, and help one another when necessary."
Everyone nodded.
The journey continued.
The northern road stretched ahead through rolling fields and distant hills. The sunlight grew warmer, and the mist finally disappeared from the landscape.
Lin Wei continued helping those who struggled with their belongings. The twins took turns assisting the children, while Yao Qing and the manager checked on the older travellers.
General Wei Rong kept watch over the surroundings, occasionally speaking with the instructors about the safest route.
The Emperor remained beside Lian An.
And although they were travelling without the privileges they had once possessed, they were surrounded by people who treated one another with consideration and kindness.
Lady Chen walked with Princess Zhi for a while, discussing the previous night’s attack. Prince Liang and the Emperor’s brother checked the carts, while the Emperor’s sister-in-law helped distribute food to those who had not eaten enough.
Even the Dowager, despite her tiredness, stopped to encourage an exhausted young mother.
No one was being treated as more important simply because of their former position.
They were travelling as one family.
As the afternoon approached, the instructor looked back at the group.
Their pace was steady.
Their formation remained orderly.
And, most importantly, nobody was lagging behind.
He nodded in satisfaction.
"Much better."
At the front of the group, Lian An looked toward the distant northern mountains.
Their destination was still far away, and the danger they had encountered might not be the last obstacle on their journey.
But today, at least, they were moving forward together.
She turned toward the Emperor.
"Do you think we’ll reach the next settlement before sunset?"
"If everyone continues at this pace, we should."
"Then let’s hope nobody suddenly decides they want to stop and admire the scenery."
The Emperor glanced at her.
"Are you referring to someone in particular?"
Lian An smiled innocently.
"Why? Do you feel guilty?"
He laughed.
Behind them, the twins began arguing again over who had helped more people, while Lin Wei tried unsuccessfully to convince them that helping others was not a competition.
Yao Qing joined their conversation, and soon the manager was laughing along with them.
Their voices carried across the northern road.
For the first time since the rogue attack, the journey felt less like an anxious escape and more like an adventure shared among companions.
And beneath the brightening sky, the entire party continued northward—more cautious than before, but also more united.

A Heartfelt Note of Support for Ghost in the Palace ????
Thank you so much for being part of this beautiful journey with Ghost in the Palace! Your support gives me the motivation to continue writing Lian An’s story and bringing new adventures, mysteries, laughter, and unexpected twists to life. ??
We have reached Chapter 390, and there is still so much waiting to unfold! From Lian An’s complicated life as the Empress to her growing relationship with the Emperor, from palace conspiracies to the hilarious arguments of Fen Yu, Wei Rong, and Li Shen, this story has grown into something truly special.
Our three beloved ghosts are not ordinary companions. They have their own personalities, pride, feelings, and complicated pasts. Fen Yu, Wei Rong, and Li Shen have stood beside Lian An through difficult times, helping her navigate dangers that ordinary people cannot even see. But now, it seems their own ghostly world has become just as chaotic as the imperial palace!
Imagine being an Empress who must deal with palace politics, dangerous enemies, mysterious magic, and an entire courtyard filled with ghosts who cannot stop arguing. And when those ghosts come to demand justice over their romantic troubles, how is Lian An supposed to react? Should she laugh at their ridiculous behaviour or become irritated by the endless disturbances?
Their latest dispute is not simply about jealousy or wounded pride. It reflects the complicated relationships among the ghosts, especially when some of them have been manipulating their partners or treating love like a game. Fen Yu, Wei Rong, and Li Shen have their own painful experiences, and watching similar behaviour repeated among other ghosts naturally brings back old frustrations.
This new development promises humour, emotional moments, and perhaps a little wisdom hidden beneath all the chaos. Even though these characters are ghosts, their feelings are surprisingly human. They can become jealous, angry, disappointed, protective, and tired of watching others repeat the same mistakes. Their supernatural existence does not make them free from emotional complications.
And that is what makes Ghost in the Palace so enjoyable. The story is not only about an Empress, an Emperor, or the secrets hidden behind palace walls. It is also about relationships, loyalty, personal growth, friendship, and learning to understand the consequences of our actions.
Lian An has already faced many challenges, but her journey is far from over. Her relationship with the Emperor continues to develop, the mysteries surrounding dark magic remain intriguing, and the ghosts always find a way to turn an ordinary day into an unforgettable adventure. There is still so much room for surprising revelations, deeper character development, and moments that will make readers laugh one minute and feel emotional the next.
To everyone who has continued reading until Chapter 390, thank you for staying with this story. Your patience and encouragement mean everything. To those who leave comments and share their thoughts, please know that your reactions make this journey even more meaningful. Every reader who laughs at the ghosts’ arguments, worries about Lian An, or wonders what the Emperor will do next becomes part of this growing story.
If you are enjoying Ghost in the Palace, please continue showing your love through reads, comments,
There are still secrets to uncover, arguments to settle, hearts to heal, and adventures waiting around the corner. And with Fen Yu, Wei Rong, and Li Shen involved, peace in the palace may remain an impossible dream!
