SUMMARY

A True-but-Unseen Account, as told by Inspector Specter

Dear Reader, if you are looking for a happy story, you have picked up the wrong book, and I suggest you put it down gently and walk away.

You have been told the world is exactly what it looks like. This is a kindness, and like most kindnesses it is not entirely true. Behind the Veil, in an place you will not find on any map (it is called Nowhere, and it takes that name seriously), there is an Academy where the unseen learn to use what they are. The students there are Awakened. The teachers are mostly monsters. some rules are written in a contract that looks blank to everyone but the person who must obey it.

Into this school walks Arthur Specter, a boy who is something between a ghost and a human, and who is, according to every record, not supposed to exist. He wants only to be left alone. Unfortunately for him, he has already made two mistakes: he has noticed a lonely girl whose very presence kills what it touches, and he has been noticed by the Game of Life. The Game is a contract, a loan, and a playground, and it is far more dangerous than any of those. The man who runs it smiles a great deal and has never once told a lie. This is not the comfort you might expect.

Here you will find clans that cannot trust one another, children made to play games with real debts, and a system that always seems to be watching. Not every question is answered here, and not every answer is kind.

I have recorded all of it, because someone must, and because you will never see it yourself unless you read it here.

Turn the page, Dear Reader, and witness the unseen. Do not say I did not warn you.
