Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Chapter 151: They Want More From Him

The stabilization held through the night, fragile but unbroken, Arjun’s coherence anchored by the foundational architecture’s borrowed strength while Ethan, the system, and a rotating watch of exhausted volunteers kept the connection alive.

By morning, word of the confrontation had spread across every delegation still camped at the Citadel, and the courtyard that had spent weeks debating charter language now buzzed with a very different kind of urgency.

"They’re not done," Kaia said, finding Ethan slumped near the excavation site, hands still faintly glowing from hours of maintained contact. "The Threshold Accord’s own monitoring picked up further activity from the ’true governing tier’ overnight. They haven’t withdrawn. They’ve been reorganizing."

"Reorganizing for what," Ethan asked, too tired to fully brace for the answer.

[NOTICE: The system can confirm. It intercepted a formal transmission roughly twenty minutes ago, addressed directly to the subject, delayed for delivery until daylight hours - a courtesy the system finds almost insultingly procedural given what happened last night.]

"Play it," Ethan said.

[TRANSMISSION: THE GOVERNING TIER HAS COMPLETED INTERNAL DELIBERATION. YOUR INTERVENTION LAST NIGHT PREVENTED SCHEDULED RE-CONTAINMENT OF ARJUN MEHRA. THIS OUTCOME WAS NOT ANTICIPATED.]

[NOTICE: GIVEN DEMONSTRATED CAPABILITY TO DISRUPT ESTABLISHED PROTOCOL, THE GOVERNING TIER HAS REVISED ITS ASSESSMENT OF SUBJECT ETHAN VERMA.]

Ethan sat up straighter, wary. "Revised how."

[TRANSMISSION: RATHER THAN CONTINUE OPPOSING THE PROPOSED "WATCH" STRUCTURE, THE GOVERNING TIER WISHES TO PROPOSE A DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENT. SUBJECT VERMA HAS DEMONSTRATED CAPABILITY EXCEEDING EVERY PRIOR CANDIDATE ACROSS THIS NETWORK’S ENTIRE HISTORY, INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL SUCCESSOR WHO CONSTRUCTED THIS GOVERNING TIER CENTURIES AGO. WE PROPOSE FULL TRANSFER OF AUTHORITY.]

The courtyard went quiet around them, Kaia’s expression sharpening with immediate alarm.

[TRANSMISSION: SUBJECT VERMA WOULD ASSUME COMPLETE, UNCONTESTED GOVERNANCE OF THE ENTIRE MULTIVERSAL NETWORK - FOUNDATIONAL ARCHITECTURE, GOVERNING TIER, AND EVERY REGISTERED INSTANCE - REPLACING THE CURRENT STRUCTURE ENTIRELY. THIS WOULD RESOLVE THE FOUNDATIONAL SUBSYSTEM’S INSTABILITY, ELIMINATE FURTHER RISK TO ARJUN MEHRA, AND PREVENT ANY FUTURE CONFLICT BETWEEN THIS TIER AND THE PROPOSED WATCH.]

Ethan stared at the fading transmission, feeling something cold settle in his stomach that had nothing to do with exhaustion.

"They’re offering me everything," he said slowly. "All of it. No committee. No council. No forty-seven-Instance vote. Just - hand it over, and the problem goes away."

[NOTICE: The system would note the timing is deeply suspicious. Less than twelve hours after the subject successfully defended Arjun against direct containment, the same authority that attempted that containment is now offering him total, unaccountable power over the entire network.]

"It’s not an offer," Malachar said, arriving in time to catch the tail end of the exchange, his expression grim with recognition. "It’s a trap dressed as a reward. Take total authority, and there’s nobody left to check you. No Watch. No council. Just you, alone, exactly the structure that’s already failed six times before you."

"Or," Sundari said quietly, joining them, her weathered face carrying a different, more unsettling theory, "it’s simpler than that. Maybe they’ve simply calculated that a single, powerful, isolated ruler is easier to eventually corrupt, corner, or contain than a genuinely distributed structure answerable to thousands of worlds. Give you everything, let you hold it alone long enough to become exactly what they can manage - the same way they apparently managed whoever built this tier in the first place."

Ethan sat with that, the pieces settling into a shape that made his stomach turn. "So either way, this isn’t actually a peace offering. It’s just a different version of the same trap. Isolate me. Make me the single point of failure. Wait for me to either burn out or become someone they can control."

[NOTICE: The system agrees with this assessment.]

He refused the offer within the hour, formally, in front of the Coalition’s remaining representatives, the courtyard bearing witness to what felt, by now, like a familiar rhythm - Ethan saying no to power, loudly, publicly, and meaning every word of it.

"I’m not taking sole authority over anything," he said, addressing the empty air where the governing tier’s presence lingered, still monitoring. "Not because I don’t think I could hold it. Because I’ve spent this entire volume learning exactly why holding it alone is the mistake, over and over, every single time it’s been tried. You want to fix the instability your own hidden authority caused? Join the Watch. Answer to a council. Let six thousand Instances actually see what you’ve been doing all this time, instead of operating from somewhere nobody even knew existed until last night."

The silence that followed stretched long enough that Ethan half expected no response at all.

[TRANSMISSION: YOUR REFUSAL IS NOTED.]

[TRANSMISSION: THE GOVERNING TIER WILL NOT SUBMIT TO OVERSIGHT FROM STRUCTURES IT DID NOT AUTHORIZE.]

"Then we’ve got a problem," Ethan said, "because I’m not backing off the Watch, and I’m not letting you touch Arjun again, and I’m genuinely, honestly getting tired of every version of authority in this multiverse assuming the answer to instability is always more control instead of actually fixing what’s broken."

[TRANSMISSION: THIS POSITION WILL BE ESCALATED.]

The connection went dark, and the courtyard exhaled collectively, the tension of the exchange finally easing, though not fully - everyone present understood, without needing to be told, that "escalated" carried a weight none of them wanted to sit with too closely.

That evening, exhausted but resolute, Ethan sat with Arjun - steadier now, though still visibly fragile from the previous night’s near-unraveling - near the World Tree, the two of them finally getting a quiet moment amid everything still unresolved.

"Thank you," Arjun said simply. "For last night. For refusing them today. I don’t think I’ve had anyone genuinely fight to keep me whole in longer than I can properly remember."

"You’d have done the same," Ethan said. "You already tried, once, leaving that fragment behind for whoever needed it. I just got to actually finish what you started."

Arjun was quiet for a long moment, something considering behind his blurred, steadying features. "There’s something I need to tell you," he said finally. "Something I only remembered fully during last night’s containment attempt - pieces of memory the governing tier’s interference briefly loosened before your intervention stopped it."

Ethan straightened, sensing the weight of whatever was coming. "What kind of memory."

"I wasn’t the first person to refuse the seat and build something to help whoever came after," Arjun said slowly. "I told you, weeks ago, that the seat’s been offered to six known candidates. That was true, as far as the official record goes. But I remember something else now. A seventh case. Older than mine. Older, I think, than the governing tier itself."

Ethan felt the Void Sword hum faintly against his shoulder, low and wary.

"Someone came before you too," he said slowly.

"Yes," Arjun said. "And I think - though I can’t be fully certain yet - I think that seventh candidate might be exactly who built the containment protocol the governing tier just used against me. Not the tier itself. The mechanism underneath it. Something considerably older, and considerably more dangerous, than anything we’ve encountered so far."
