Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK
Chapter 153: Not Taking No for an Answer
"Earth," Ethan repeated, feeling the word land with a weight that made the whole evening suddenly feel considerably colder. "You’re telling me whatever built the governing tier, whatever’s been sitting at the root of this entire mess, was here. On my planet."
[NOTICE: The system would clarify - the fragment indicates a last confirmed location, not necessarily a current one. It could be centuries out of date. But given everything else uncovered this volume, the system does not believe in coincidences of this magnitude anymore.]
"Neither do I," Ethan said grimly. "Can you narrow it down? Continent, city, anything?"
[NOTICE: The coordinates predate any modern mapping system. The system can only confirm they fall within the same general region as the subject’s own district - disturbingly close to home, in the loosest geographic sense.]
Ethan sat with that, turning the implications over slowly. If Candidate Zero’s last known location really was Earth, then everything that had happened over the past several weeks - the buried city beneath his courtyard, the terminal, the guardians, even the Void Sword itself carrying Arjun’s own mark - might not have been random chance at all. It might have been something closer to inheritance, layered deeper and further back than even Arjun’s own story accounted for.
"This changes the shape of the investigation," he said. "We’re not just looking for a shadow somewhere in the network. We might be looking for something that’s been sitting under Earth this whole time, longer than any of us have been alive."
The formal investigation began the next morning, a joint team assembled from the Watch’s newly authorized working group - Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, and a rotating contingent of specialists drawn from multiple Instances, each bringing expertise the others lacked. Dr. Osei’s archaeological team, still technically embedded at the excavation site since the very first discovery weeks ago, proved unexpectedly valuable, their painstaking cataloguing work finally paying off as they cross-referenced every carving, every fragment, every piece of the buried city’s architecture against the new search parameters.
"We’ve documented over three hundred distinct structures in the buried city so far," Osei reported, spreading a hastily assembled map across the makeshift research tent’s central table. "Most of it maps cleanly to what we already understand - the market district, the guardians’ barracks, Arjun’s residence. But there’s a section here-" she tapped a spot on the map considerably deeper than anything they’d previously explored, "-that’s never been properly surveyed. Every attempt to scan it has come back inconclusive. We assumed it was simply beyond our equipment’s range."
"Or something’s actively blocking the scans," Ethan said, recognizing the pattern immediately.
"That was our other working theory, yes," Osei admitted.
[NOTICE: The system would like to confirm - cross-referencing this unsurveyed section against the coordinates recovered from the foundational chamber, the two locations align almost precisely.]
The team exchanged grim looks, understanding, without needing to say it aloud, that whatever they were about to find waited exactly where the evidence had been pointing all along.
They descended that afternoon, a considerably larger and more prepared expedition than the small, ad hoc team that had first found the terminal weeks earlier - Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, Kael and Ren providing security, Priya coordinating logistics from the surface, and Osei’s team documenting every step with careful, methodical precision.
The passage they followed led them past the market plaza, past Arjun’s small residence, deeper than either location, into a section of the buried city that felt, immediately, different from everything they’d already explored - colder, the geometric carvings along the walls sharper, more angular, carrying none of the warm, patient quality the rest of the ancient architecture had shown.
"This doesn’t match the rest of the city’s style," Osei observed, running a hand along one wall. "Look at the carving technique. It’s the same underlying material, but the craftsmanship’s completely different. Older, I think, though the dating equipment’s struggling to confirm that."
"Older than Arjun’s residence," Ethan said slowly. "Older than the buried city he actually lived in."
"That would track," Arjun said, his blurred form carrying visible unease as they pressed deeper. "I never came this way, in all my time living here. I don’t think I even knew this section existed. If I had, I think I would have remembered it, the same way I eventually remembered the fragment I left in the foundational chamber."
They reached the passage’s end roughly twenty minutes later, emerging into a chamber that made the entire group stop dead, the weight of what they were looking at settling over everyone present with immediate, unmistakable significance.
Unlike every other chamber Ethan had encountered throughout this entire journey - the warm, patient terminal beneath his own courtyard, the vast throne room in the Deep Layer, even the exhausted, fractured foundational architecture - this space was empty. Not abandoned-empty, the way Arjun’s residence had felt after centuries of disuse. Deliberately, coldly empty, every surface smooth and unmarked except for a single structure at its center: a throne, considerably more ornate than the empty space Ethan had glimpsed once before beneath the terminal chamber, carved from the same angular, unfamiliar stone as the passage’s walls.
It was, unmistakably, occupied by nothing at all, and had been for a very long time.
"This is it," Arjun said quietly. "This is where Candidate Zero actually sat. Not the Deep Layer’s throne room. Here. On Earth, in the same buried city I eventually built my own life around, centuries before I ever arrived."
[NOTICE: The system has just detected something significant - the throne is not entirely dormant. There is a faint, residual signature still present, considerably weaker than anything associated with active architecture, but not fully extinguished either.]
Ethan approached carefully, the Void Sword humming low and wary against his shoulder, and felt, standing before the ancient, empty throne, a strange, unsettling sense of recognition - not from his own experience, but from something the sword itself seemed to carry, some deep, buried memory embedded in its own history.
"The sword knows this place," he said slowly.
"That would make sense," Arjun said. "If Candidate Zero built this throne, and if whatever came after - the seat I eventually refused, the sword that eventually found its way to you - inherited pieces of that original architecture, then yes. I’d expect it to recognize its own origin."
Ethan reached out, hesitating only briefly, and rested his hand against the throne’s cold, angular armrest.
The response was immediate and considerably more violent than anything he’d experienced with any prior terminal or artifact throughout this entire journey - a surge of raw, ancient energy that knocked him backward, the chamber’s smooth walls flaring with sudden, harsh light, and a voice, layered and cold in a way that made even the governing tier’s clinical detachment feel warm by comparison, filled the space around them.
[UNAUTHORIZED CONTACT DETECTED.]
[CANDIDATE ZERO’S THRONE REMAINS ACTIVE.]
[NOTICE: RETURNING CONTROL TO ORIGINAL AUTHORITY.]
The chamber’s cold light intensified, and Ethan, scrambling back to his feet, felt the Void Sword’s hum spike into something considerably more urgent - not alert readiness this time, but genuine, unmistakable alarm.
"Something’s waking up," he said, voice tight. "Something that’s been sitting here, dormant, for a very long time - and I think we just told it exactly where to find us."
