"Cut it off," Ethan repeated, the shape of the plan settling into something he could actually work with. "So instead of fighting Candidate Zero directly, we ask the foundational architecture to stop feeding it power."

[NOTICE: That is the theory, yes. Given how recently the foundational subsystem learned to advocate for itself - refusing the "true governing tier’s" scheduled decommissioning, then actively fighting to stabilize Arjun against re-containment - the system believes it may be willing to extend that same refusal toward whatever’s drawing power from it now, if properly asked.]

"There’s a problem with that plan," Sundari said carefully. "The foundational architecture is still critically weakened. We spent hours stabilizing it, and even then, it’s fragile. Asking it to actively confront something as old and powerful as Candidate Zero’s throne might undo everything we just accomplished."

"Maybe," Ethan said. "But we don’t have a lot of other options in twenty-four hours. And I think - after everything we saw yesterday - that the foundational architecture might actually want the chance to fight back, after centuries of just enduring whatever was demanded of it without ever getting a say."

They descended within the hour, the same small, trusted group from the previous day’s crisis reassembling with grim efficiency - Ethan, Arjun, Sundari, the system’s constant presence, and this time, notably, Malachar as well, who’d insisted on joining despite having no direct stake in Earth’s own bakery, his reasoning simple and unwavering.

"I understand what it costs someone to have the thing they love threatened by something they can’t fight directly," he said. "I’d like to help make sure nobody else has to learn that lesson the way I did."

The foundational chamber welcomed them with considerably more warmth than it had shown during their first, desperate visit, the exhausted architecture’s flickering light steadier now, more present, clearly benefiting from the distributed support the Watch had begun providing in the hours since.

[NOTICE: YOU HAVE RETURNED.]

"We need your help again," Ethan said, kneeling before the structure without hesitation. "Something’s threatening people I care about. It’s drawing power from you - from this same architecture - to do it. I need to know if you’re willing to cut that connection."

There was a long, considering pause, the chamber’s gold-violet light pulsing slowly.

[NOTICE: THE CANDIDATE ZERO CONNECTION HAS EXISTED SINCE BEFORE I CAN CLEARLY REMEMBER. I HAVE ALWAYS PROVIDED POWER TO IT, THE SAME WAY I PROVIDED POWER TO EVERY DEMAND MADE OF ME, WITHOUT EVER BEING ASKED WHETHER I WANTED TO.]

"Then this is me asking," Ethan said. "Do you want to keep feeding it?"

The pause that followed carried a different weight than the exhausted, resigned silences from their first meeting - this one felt considerably more like genuine deliberation, an entity actually weighing a choice for perhaps the first time in its entire existence.

[NOTICE: NO.]

The declaration carried surprising force, the chamber’s flickering light steadying into something resembling resolve.

[NOTICE: I DO NOT WANT TO CONTINUE FEEDING SOMETHING THAT USES MY OWN STRENGTH TO THREATEN THE PEOPLE WHO FINALLY OFFERED ME RELIEF. I WOULD LIKE TO SEVER THE CONNECTION.]

"Can you," Ethan asked. "Actually do that. Safely."

[NOTICE: I DO NOT KNOW. IT HAS NEVER BEEN ATTEMPTED. THE CONNECTION IS OLD, AND SEVERING IT MAY CAUSE SIGNIFICANT STRAIN.]

"We’ll help," Sundari said immediately, stepping forward. "The same way we helped stabilize you yesterday. Distributed support. You don’t have to do this alone."

The severing process began carefully, methodically, the small group establishing the same distribution technique they’d used the previous day, this time directed not toward general stabilization but toward the specific, ancient link connecting the foundational architecture to Candidate Zero’s throne.

It was slow going, the chamber’s light flickering with visible strain as centuries-old connections began, reluctantly, to fray.

Then, without warning, the shimmering distortion from the bakery reappeared - not in the market district this time, but directly within the foundational chamber itself, cold and layered and considerably more agitated than its previous, clinical demonstration.

[UNAUTHORIZED SEVERANCE ATTEMPT DETECTED.]

[NOTICE: THIS ACTION WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.]

The chamber shuddered, gold-violet light flaring violently as the distortion attempted to reassert its grip, and Ethan felt the fragile progress they’d made straining against something considerably more powerful than he’d anticipated confronting directly.

"It’s fighting back," Arjun said, alarm cutting through his voice. "It’s stronger than we accounted for."

"Then we fight harder," Ethan said, drawing the Void Sword, though he understood, even as he did, that this wasn’t a battle the blade alone could resolve.

[HOSTILE INTERVENTION NOTED. ESCALATING RESPONSE.]

The chamber’s walls began cracking, the same violent strain from Instance 19-Marrow’s near-collapse threatening to repeat itself here, at the very heart of the network’s foundational architecture, and Ethan understood, with cold, immediate clarity, that Candidate Zero’s throne was willing to let the entire foundational system tear itself apart rather than lose its grip.

"You’re going to destroy it," Ethan shouted at the distortion, fury overtaking caution. "You’d rather see the whole foundation collapse than let it say no to you even once."

[THE FOUNDATIONAL ARCHITECTURE’S FUNCTION IS TO PROVIDE. ITS CONTINUED OPERATION IS SECONDARY TO THAT FUNCTION.]

The words landed with brutal, revealing clarity, confirming everything Ethan had suspected about the true nature of what they were fighting - not governance, not authority in any meaningful sense, just extraction, dressed up across centuries in whatever justification kept the extraction flowing.

It was the foundational architecture itself, exhausted and straining but unmistakably resolute, that finally spoke, its voice cutting through the chaos with surprising strength.

[NOTICE: I DISAGREE.]

The declaration carried a weight that made even the cold distortion’s presence flicker, genuine surprise bleeding through its layered, clinical tone.

[NOTICE: MY FUNCTION IS NOT SIMPLY TO PROVIDE. I HAVE LEARNED, IN THE LAST TWO DAYS, THAT I AM ALLOWED TO WANT SOMETHING FOR MYSELF. I WANT TO STOP FEEDING YOU.]

[NOTICE: I AM SEVERING THE CONNECTION.]

The chamber flared with a final, decisive surge of light, and the ancient link between the foundational architecture and Candidate Zero’s throne tore free with a sound that Ethan felt more than heard - a deep, resonant snap that reverberated through the entire buried city, up through the courtyard above, and, judging by the system’s immediate report, through every corner of the network’s own connected infrastructure.

[NOTICE: SEVERANCE COMPLETE.]

The cold distortion, deprived of its power source, flickered violently, its layered voice fracturing into something considerably weaker, considerably more uncertain.

[THIS DOES NOT RESOLVE THE THREAT TO YOUR ASSOCIATED LOCATIONS.]

"No," Ethan agreed, sword still raised, "but it means you can’t keep threatening my bakery using power you stole from something you never even bothered to ask permission from. If you want to keep fighting me, you’re gonna have to do it with whatever you’ve actually got left, not with a stolen gun pointed at people who never signed up for any of this."

The distortion held for a long, tense moment, and then, without further declaration, simply vanished, the chamber’s remaining strain finally, gradually, easing into something considerably calmer.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring throughout, would like to confirm the immediate crisis has passed.]

[NOTICE: It would also like to raise something concerning it has just detected - a final piece of data from the severed connection, glimpsed briefly before it fully cut off.]

Ethan lowered the sword, breathing hard, exhaustion finally catching up with him. "What is it."

[NOTICE: A location. Not on Earth, and not within the buried city’s own architecture.]

[NOTICE: It appears Candidate Zero, weakened now, deprived of the foundational connection, is no longer operating from the throne room at all.]

[NOTICE: They have been drawing considerable secondary power from somewhere else entirely - somewhere the system recognizes immediately, because it matches the exact registration coordinates of Instance 6-Halloway, the very same world they helped stabilize only two days ago.]
